It is not uncommon for roses to have basal canes with prickles and flowering laterals that are sparsely armed or even unarmed. We encounter this sometimes when we are trying to ID unknown roses. One says their found rose can't be the same as some named variety because theirs has no prickles. Eventually, upon closer inspection, we find that the flowering canes are thornless, but the basal canes, sometimes even only the base of the basal canes, have prickles. Come to think of it, it wouldn't surprise me if the budwood or cutting used to propagate Hot Cocoa were unarmed, but eventually, new basals with normal armature emerged. I saw the same thing on my ownroot Tamora. The young growth the first year was sparely armed, but the first major hefty basal - and every subsequent basal - was massively thorny.

In preparing for winter, I got out my hot chocolate/hot cocoa mixes and ingredients. I found 1/2 box of Godiva Dark Chocolate Truffle Hot Cocoa, 1/2 box Ghiradelli Hot Chocolate mix, and The Fresh Market Hot Cocoa mix. I thought this would be a good time to taste test. To my surprise, the less expensive TFM was a little bit better. I combined all three into a large Mason jar. This winter I have been heating half & half, milk, a TJ's truffle, then adding the combined mixes to the hot milk. Add marshmallow fluff. Wow, now that's a low cal breakfast drink. I don't know who to credit with this recipe, but it's good. I have been making half batches: Hot Cocoa Mix Makes about 20 servings 3 cups nonfat dry milk 2 cups confectioners' sugar 1 1/2 cups Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips 1/4 teaspoon salt Combine ingredients in large bowl. Working in two batches, pulse ingredients in food processor until chocolate is finely ground. Store in airtight container for up to 3 months. To make hot cocoa, stir 1/3 cup of this mix into 1 cup of hot milk. Top with whipped cream or mini marshmallows.

The reason for the added cocoa is the reduced size of the nestles quick container. Originally, the recipe called for the 32oz, 2 pounds. My hubby, the math genius, did some kind of fancy math figuring and came up with about 1/3 cup was missing from the container that was 30oz. There wasn't any way to figure out the preportions of what is in the nestles quick so my daughter said to just toss in 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa and see how it turns out, since trying to reduce everything else might not work. So I just tossed in the unsweetened hersheys cocoa and have been doing it ever since. It does taste a little richer than it used to, actually a little more chocolate taste too. Just wish these manufacturers would stop changing sizes on us. It's hard to use old recipes when they change the size of containers.
