hp photosmart error

My photosmart 8450 printer will not print and gives me the error message:

Color cartridge failed - replace it, or remove it to print using ink-backup printing mode.

I replaced the cartridge, which did not help. I went to HP support and did what they said to do------thru the last steps they suggested of cleaning the cartridges and the connections with distilled water.

I am still getting this message (and, of course, it still will not print).

What do all of you suggest as to where to take it to get it repaired. Or would you possibly have any other suggestions to try first?

Mine has done that a couple if times. After i checked and made sure the ink cartridge was seated right i unplugged the printer and left it that way for a short time. When i plugged it back in, it worked.

No idea of the price of that printer model but I would consider taking it to be repaired as a very long shot. These folks charge somewhere around $75 per hour. You can buy a new printer for that money.

I had problems over the last 3 months with both my HP and Lexmark printers. Try removing either or both of the power cord and the USB connection. Probably the USB cord will do more but I cannot remember now. Patches makes the same suggestion above and Randy offered this to another poster recently.

You should be able to use Windows Explorer. RIGHT click Start, click Explore or Windows Explorer depending on your Windows operating system. In the new window click the plus sign beside C: in the left side Click the plus sign beside Program files in the left side Click the plus sign beside the HP folder in the left side Now you should see all the sub folder inside the HP folder listed underneath and one of those will likely be holding your photos. Click on that folder to highlight it and all the contents now appear in the right side of your screen. Assuming you want them all click on the top photo, hold down the Shift key and tap the End key to highlight everything. RIGHT click anywhere on the highlighted data and click Copy. Now look near the top on the left side and you see your My Pictures folder, RIGHT click on it and click Paste in the pop up. Done. Note you could use cut and paste but as these are photos and if lost they are gone forever i like to copy and paste. Then I can return and delete them in the old folder if I wish. To me that is easier than digging stuff out of the recycle bin.

START>Printers>right click on the printer entry. Is is set as the default printer? Have you used any system cleaners in which you removed drivers, registry entries, etc.? Have you uninstalled or installed any applications? When all else fails uninstall all the HP software and drivers according to the HP instructions, and re-install according to the HP instructions. DA

Seems like you may have a corrupt file or two. First thing I would do is shut down the computer and restart to see if that clears the issue. Second I would remove the software, remove the connection to the printer and re-install as per HP instructions, reconnecting when the software tells you to do so.

I didn't mean to leave the board and not update but I lost my ISP service Monday morning and still don't have it back (a snow issue). I am using my daughter's computer and just wanted to thank you both and let you know I have the printer back in working order..........Jeanie
