Question about depth of grout in bathroom tile floor

It seems to me that the grout between my tiles is too low. I feel the edges of the marble tiles more than I would like. The contractor says the edges of the tile are not squared off, but slightly, well, edged or slanted and the grout should not be any higher. I love all the work he has done and I can see the slight slant to the edges, but I wanted to make sure this was O.K. What do you think?

The only way you'll get the grout perfectly flush is if you were to have a marble refinisher come in and ground the stone down and repolish it. You're going to have a slight drop in the grout lines. It's unavoidable the question is how much of a drop do you have?

Thanks for the quick response, Bill! I really trust my contractor because he's done a really excellent job with everything. So... I would guess its an acceptable drop, just not something I'm used to having. I certainly don't want to start grinding my stone down!! Thanks again for the quick answer. I'll talk to him again tomorrow and we'll decide if the level is O.K. He's always willing to go the extra mile to make me happy!

My first glance didn't see the border as "too much", until it was focused on. Then it did seem a bit large. I would live with this for a while and add details as others mentioned. You could play with the tile using contact paper to change tile size, add black trim ect. But even the inspiration pics, there are things I would change. Final thoughts are the pattern is is a bit large and yes to wider black trim. A half round black on top of the upper tiles would work as a detail and easy to install. Not sure painting tiles is the answer. Love the BW ticking shower curtain shown. I just finished my kitchen with BW tile and bead board to bring back the feeling of my little 50s house. It is great to know others are around that have some comfort with this style.

Exactly! btw. I sound like a total rube I know, but no one ever told me I have to squeegee my glass to keep it from etching. Get the girls a squeegee and have them go to town after every shower. It will keep the grout cleaner as well as save you from having to see permanent spots on the glass door.

If you have a curb, you will have the cracks develop there, too. and where the walls meet the floor. Anywhere where two different materials meet or where one surface meets another that is in a different direction (known as "change of plane"). My contractor still grouts such places, too. But I did a solid surface shower that he could not do wrong. I am keeping an eye on the place where the floor meets the shower pan, all other places are in dry areas. So there it is just cosmetic. I would guess that water can get behind your tile with those cracks. If properly waterproofed it is fine, but if not, I would get to this as soon as you can. A lot of shower builders do not use waterproofing, even though it is now required. If you do a search on this forum for "Shower waterproof," you can see many discussions about it and learn what is and is not waterproof. (Redguard yes, Durock no, for instance.)

thanks mainenell. Any suggestions on the type of caulking, Im sure once I go to Lowes or HD, there will be so many types and brands with minor and major differences, I will get lost. Most frustrating thing about a DIY project is to pick an item at these big box stores. Is this the current one grout?
