What is your one 'go to' Christmas item you use year after year

My go to Christmas item is a stack of red dinner plates I bought at the GW for 10 cents each, 15 plates for $1.50. They are from Pier 1. They are not just great for Christmas, but Valentine's Day and 4th of July just to name a few holidays I use them for.

Wow! Great bargains! Red plates would be a good addition!

My one "go-to" item that I use for Christmas is the Holy Family I made in ceramics class back in the mid-70's. It was greenware that I cleaned & painted & then the teacher fired it in a kiln. I love it because it was made after the birth of our own son.

Wow, ask a difficult question why don't you! LOL.

I think maybe my Santa collection, that's the only thing I can think of that I've decorated with the longest and Christmas doesn't seem complete without them. Tho on a practical "go to" thing, it would have to be garland!

Bump! Thought it might be a good time to bump this. Tomorrow I have some nieces coming over to bake & decorate cookies with me. They are 12 & 14, the babies out of 17 nieces and nephews. I am grateful they still want to bake with Aunt Becky. So today its been a flurry of activity to take down Thanksgiving and put up Christmas. Right now I have gingerbread cookie dough, linzer cookie dough, and almond cookie dough in the frig chillin'! I have the ingredients out to make the dough for sugar cookies too.. Last year I could not bake fast enough to keep up with the cookie decorating crew, but I have a couple less coming tomorrow. It'll be a sad day for me when the nieces outgrow this. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the moment. Happy Baking!

This has turned into a wonderful discussion! I have my mother's old juice extractor; it is in excellent condition and works perfectly but it is lemon yellow rather than white. And despite decades of being used regularly, it shows no sign of rust or discoloration. Oh, and I have Mom's old cast iron frying pan as well. She got it at her wedding shower party in 1948. I also have my original Oster blender from the early 1970s. This thing is a real workhorse and so far has handled everything I have thrown at it with no sign of slowing down. And when I bought my mobile home (in a wonderful senior park), it came with the original 1978 O'Keefe & Merritt electric wall oven. The upper door was slightly ajar and two different contractors told me that to close it and cook I needed to slide the latch over to completely close it. Idiots! Only if I wanted to burn the house down along with the chicken. I soon found that there is a vintage appliance repair store in town. They came out for $65 and told me all it needed was one small part. Twenty dollars and a few minutes later--perfection. They also said it was a top notch oven, had probably not been used more than a half-dozen times, and to never get rid of it. I promised, LOL. And the washer and dryer are the same age. They were missing a couple of dials and the turnstyle in the washer needed a new part but once done, again perfection. They work perfectly.

I've knitted hats/scarves/mittens for gifts. I also knit dish cloths and everyone loves to get those. I make Bath Bombs and other bath items, but I also give a lot of food as well. Most people don't really "need" anything (at least that my coin purse can supply), but they really appreciate homemade bread/rolls and granola. I have a pancake mix that lots of folks just love (and expect) as part of their gift. Christmas Pancakes (Ingredients for the mix.) 5 T. baking powder 3 t. baking soda 1-1/2 t. salt 3 c. unbleached all-purpose flour 2 c. whole wheat flour (spelt flour is also a good choice) 1 c. multi-grain cereal (5-, 7-, 11-grain cereal - looks like chopped grain and is used as a cooked cereal) 1 c. cornmeal (I mill my own, but coarse or medium grind from Bob's Red Mill is a good substitute) 4 T. flaxmeal (or wheatgerm) 2-4 T. sucanat (or sugar, or maple sugar) Mix all ingredients together and thoroughly blend. Store the mixture in an airtight container in the freezer or refrigerator (NOT at room temperature). Makes approximately 7-1/2 cups. Measure the mix in 1/2 c. amounts for giving. To prepare pancakes: For 6 small pancakes, lightly beat one egg with 1/2 c. of ONE of the following (your choice): yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, sour cream, sweet or sour milk (add a little milk if too thick). Optional: add 1 T. softened butter or oil. Stir in 1/2 c. of the pancake mix. DO NOT over stir. Ladle out the batter onto a pre-heated griddle and fry cakes over medium heat, turning once. -------------- Give someone a new griddle and/or pancake turner, and a container of the pancake mix. -Grainlady

What's your christmas tree like this year? Creative or not??

I used to mix things up when the kids were home. I had a mishmash of their 'special' ornaments and whatever color scheme I chose for that year. The last two years I've put up a 6 foot artificial tree in the family room and decorated it with stuffed santas, snowmen & reindeer. And a lot of primitives decorations. I usually had a tree in the living room in the bay window, but this year I redecorated that room, so on tree can fit in there. Instead I put up a 2 foot lit artificial tree on the sideboard. I found some wired ribbon in the colors of my LR, and also some unbreakable balls in copper color. I happened on some glass icicles in aqua, and some aqua & copper glass onion bulbs, so I decorated the mini tree with all those. I had to flick the cat several times each time he tried to bat one of the balls off the tree, but he finally got the hint. I also had to wire the stuffed santas to the other tree because the cats knocked them down and the dogs thought they were getting new toys. Honestly, it's worst than when the kids were little!

Well....I couldn't pick just one, cause I use it all every year, but one of the first trees I like to put up is my Frosty tree:

Candy, I just love your Frosty tree! Did you make him?

My go to item is my collection of nut crackers. I get a new one every year from my hubby and I display them on our mantel. Having said that, I didn't put all of them out this year, only a few special ones, because we will be gone on Christmas weekend and I did minimal decorating this year.

It would have to be the hand made ornaments. I have so many now that they get their own tree - I have been doing this since the year I got married 1965. There is always a precious memory as each ornament is placed on the tree. Takes time and can get emotional at times but it wouldn't be Christmas without all that emotion. This was taken last year - need to get this years taken but it is pretty much the same .....

WOW My entire house!! I have boxes and boxes, angel, Christmas trees,Nativity collections along with my tree ornaments...What ISN'T used over and over..nuttin at my house. I have a few things I put out only because they were gifts and feel obligated like a couple of santas but from my Normal Rockwell Christmas tins to my cookie jar I re-use re-sue re-use!!!

Hmmm, my one go-to for decorating would have to be my crystal drops that I had ordered from an add in the back of a magazine years ago. The are great because they go with any colored ornaments I decide to use on the tree. They are so sparkly and pretty they just really finish off the look...as they say, the "jewelery" for the tree (among other things like wreaths, garlands, and table deco too.
