Yahoo is webmail unless you have their premium which can also be pop3 to be used by an email client (Outlook or like). And she must have the premium if she gets her Yahoo mail in Outlook.

If your aunt deletes old emails, then they are not going to take room on her hard drive.

Personally, I don't like web based email since you don't have it in your computer and must be online to read it. And most web based also have limits on the size of your inbox and one must delete messages from there.

I have used yahoo web based email for years and it is very good and easy to use. She can set up all the options about keeping sent emails, received emails, etc., the only ones they automatically delete are trash and spam. She should just sign up at her log in area and test it and see if she likes it.

I like Gmail, from Google.

Actually they are all web based mail.
Just some of them allow pop3 access.
Pop3 access lets you use your mail program.

I appreciate your input...my Aunt only has a 6 GB hard drive (previous post)...and no CD and/or DVD burners.

When I lost my hard drive...I lost everything in my email and I had my Office key codes stored there. I tried this promotion where you download Office over the internet and receive the CD later. I recieved the CD...with no key code. I can't remember the name of the company that I bought it from (they are probably out of business by now anyway).

If we get around to this hard drive thing, email that is not on her hard drive can be a handy place to temporarily store and access information when/if we do.

Another reason that I wanted to be sure that the email content that she wanted to save wouldn't be lost with the new install.

For me, thats the only way to go now. When my PC failed I lost everything stored on my computer but all the email and folders stored on web were still there--luckily all I needed. And in spite of all I have saved its only a small fraction of allowed space. Sandy

That's my thinking too Sandy... I can't get her to stop using Outlook, even temporarily. I just got some really nice snow sculpture pics from her via Outlook. Its handy, I must admit. I usually mail webshots to myself at Charter via Outlook and then send them out...especially if I want to save some them. We all have our weaknesses and one of mine is cats with (or appearing to fix) computers...Tech Support!

I love web based email....
If one runs out of "free" space, the cost of additional space is very low and well worth the money.
I store a copy of virtually everything I have/do there.

I use Outlook also. But use AOL's free mail for all the stuff I don't want on my computer. I like AOL better than Yahoo (tried that and MSN), but found AOL had less junk (if you can believe it) and better spam filters. Plus it's the easiest of the bunch.

One thing that helps with cutting down on how much space Outlook takes up is to empty the Deleted Items folder -- if it's trash, you need to get rid of it altogether.

Also, if your aunt sends out messages and attaches anything (photos, documents, etc.), she should delete that message from her Sent Items folder (or at least delete the attachment from the sent message). She's got the "original" on her hard drive, so she doesn't need another copy of it in Outlook. Then, be sure to empty that Deleted Items folder again!

Your aunt can create a new Personal Folders File (also known as an Outlook Data File) in which she can store the messages that she really, really wants to keep. These files have a .pst extension and can only be viewed from within Outlook. Once the .pst file has been created and messages have been moved into it, you can move the .pst file to a jump drive (also known as a thumb drive). You will have saved important messages while at the same time cleaning out the mailbox and reducing the size of Outlook on the hard drive. If you need to get to those messages again you can insert the jump drive again.

Who is her ISP? I use MSN which I believe is ie/oe based and there is an option to save email on computer or on their server. I've created a bunch of files for individual people and one for the funny email that went back and forth planning daughters wedding. Lots of really old email stored there plus an inbox that really needs to be cleaned out. They are all listed and accessible and I'm only using 1-2% of allotted space. She should have that option in her email program, no? Sandy

Currently yahoo mail is offering Yahoo Mail, Beta. I believe it is a spinoff of Google Mail, however I'm not sure as I've never used GMail. Yahoo's technology was bought when they acquired Oddpost.com. I signed up to beta test it, and I must say I am quite happy with what I am seeing. I think they are doing a great job on the user interface to make it more appealing and easier to access. I also like many of the new features they are incorporating into it, such as homepage tab, RSS feed,reading pane, photo editing, etc.
Since it's still in beta, there are some features missing. For me, it come up quick, however, I tried to access it on my neighbor's computer, he has a 56k modem, I have DSL, and I must say it was quite slow. However, everything seemed quite slow after signing up to dsl.
