Opinions on extended warranty for GE Monogram induction cooktop?

Generally we have avoided extended warranties on appliances b/c (knock on wood) we have had no problems with appliances and have read that extended warranties are rarely worth it. However, our appliance dealer has offered an extended warranty for $110 for 3 years. Since we have had no experiences with induction before we were thinking this sounds like a good deal. Any thoughts?

Also, our other new appliances are a GE Monogram convection wall oven, a Miele Optima dishwasher, a Fisher Paykel dish drawer, a U-line bev fridge, a U-line undercounter fridge, and a GE Harmony washer dryer pair. The dealer is also offering extended warranties for these and since they also have electronics and are quite a pricey step up from the tired old appliances I had before I was wondering if I should rethink my old policy of not getting an extended warranty.

In the past I would just say to myself that spending money on extended warranties was just money that I could be saving toward a new appliance if the old one broke now the warranty seems like a drop in the bucket to what a new appliance would cost. I would appreciate any experiences you have had with the reliability of these appliances. TIA.

I just removed an induction cooktop that was installed in 1983 and was working perfectly. Induction itself isn't a new or innately flimsy technology. As far as the other extended warranties go, I (personally, and it's just MY gamble) pretend they are electronics, and like electronics, I expect them to break soon or not at all.

I might be tempted on the oven though--at least make sure you use the self clean several times while it's still under warranty. Those things get HOT!

Extended warranties are a crapshoot. Generally if the thing doesn't break during the warranty period you're ok for a good while. On the other hand, with electronics in lots of the appliance the risk does go up particularly where heat is involved. You've been assuming that if something breaks you'd use the money you saved to buy a new one and the prices of things are way up now. I assume that the money I save on the extended warranties will go to a service call to fix the thing and overall I'm way ahead. The other advantage of not having an extended warranty is that you have the flexibility to call a reliable repair place to do the repair rather than being stuck with using whomever the extended warranty supplies - you should read the thread on A&E to see how bad it can get!

I love the frameless look and really want the textured surface. Also, the configuration of the burners appealed to me--the largest burner in the middle and 2 of the same size on the same side. The Monogram has everything I'm looking for and almost half the price of the Wolf. Really, that's it. Most all of them have the same technology. The difference seems to be mainly in the boost/power levels and configuration of burners. If there is something else that sets them apart then I missed it.

I was considering the ge monogram mirrored surface, but....I ruled it out because it required 12 inch clearance and that would mess up my drawer plans underneath the induction cooktop. I've since pretty much decided on the wolf or miele, which require just shy of 5 in. Thermadore has the mirrored finish, for a lot more $, but it doesn't require 12 in clearance. Also around a 5 inch clearance. The ge monogram also doesn't have the stainless border edge. I worry that raw/unprotected edge might chip (like my current cooktop). Good luck!! All these decisions!

I'm all for finding a savings where you can and never forget... appliances can always be changed out when/if they die. The GE induction, and I can't remember if it's the same for both the Monogram and Profile, require one of the largest clearances underneath with their induction tops. I believe at one point they required 12". I strongly suggest you pull the specs on the unit your purchased and check for the required clearance underneath. Since a wall oven installed under the counter has to be a certain amount of inches off the floor and are obviously a certain height; it could severely impact your ability to install it directly under your cooktop if that was your intention. I have decided to go with either to Diva or Miele since they have one of the smallest clearance. I think the Diva is only about 2". Good luck.

Which model did you end up choosing and what are your thoughts on it so far? I'm planning my kitchen renovation and am deciding between the GE Monogram induction cooktop and a similar Electrolux Icon model. After reading your post, I'm doing some research on the Profile now, too. Any input or opinions you have would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the responses. This is really helpful. I've always waited until the oven was dirty to run the self clean cycle but I've put that on my list for next week. Weissman, what is A&E? Also, I agree with you about hating to get locked into something. I hate it if I need to use a store charge card to "get the deal" b/c in the long run I always feel I can find the best deal on my own.

A&E is a service company that provides warranty service for some manufacturers (although usually not exclusively) and also sells or provides the service for some extended warranties. Most people's experience with A&E has been really poor - I've attached the link to the thread on that subject.
