Maybe one of your leg chairs it shorter than the rest and its not the screen its you rocking.

Mikie, you may have something on the chair. I tried "smooth scrolling" and it did/does change things. With that checked the scroll is smoother, but still step like, smaller steps too so the overall effect is slower scrolling. Note IE7 does the same thing.

This is on a laptop I replaced the HDD in, and then I dual loaded the notebook for XP and Linux. My subject problem is when running in XP, Linux should not have any effect, but something is amiss.

When you replaced the hard drive did you update your video drivers or are you using generic drivers provided by Microsoft?

I did nothing with the video drivers. I used the HP factory restore disk for load XP SP1, this has been updated to SP2 with all the extras up to today. HP also provided at least one CD of drivers, what do you suggest? Installing video drivers off of the CD, or going Device Manager and calling for an update of the video driver there..assuming I can get something newer off the web.

Jerry if you used the second CD you referred to then you should have the right drivers installed. I expect that CD had all the needed drivers for mobo, sound, video, LAN etc.

Just a suggestion that you may have already thought of, but have you gone into Control Panel--->Mouse and run device setup from there? You can change the motion (scroll) settings within this dialog box.

Owbist, I didn't run the "second CD", I just recall having them, and they are marked drivers. I read you to suggest when recovering a factory load, one needs to do the same with the drivers.

Pkponder, the scroll problem is present in the browser window even if I use the browser scroll bar on the right side of the screen, as contrasted with using the scroll wheel on the mouse, which I do have when using the mouse, I frequently just use the touch pad.

My touch-pad, appropriately called a "synaptics pointing device", its properties has a sensitivity setting that relates to finger pressure causing jerky motion.

That may be what Pkponder was talking about. I don't know yet if that's the problem, but I'll try next time I get on the subject machine. I'll also look at driver updates.

The notebook I'm using at the moment has a "synaptics" icon in the tool tray, when clicked on it brings up my mouse utility, which addresses the three buttons and scroll wheel. The sensitivity was very low. I moved it to mid-range. But, this machine doesn't display the scroll problem I've been asking about.

I looked at the Device Manager and there was a set of items under "other" that didn't have a driver. One was the Video Driver. I did a "reinstall" on all of them, taking whatever the Wizard could find on the web. This put each of the "Other" items under their proper category, but he "Jerky" scroll continues.

Looking at the mouse setting, it is a default that doesn't include scroll, a simple two button mouse. So there's nothing to set up there, except the laptop does have a scroll on the touch-pad, so the factory load for XP must be missing something HP put on to address their hardware. I haven't yet looked for a "synaptics" driver, which I think it too must need (too being my Gateway notebook has that icon, and the mouse utility supports a scrolling function).

After loading drivers, including the video, the Jerky Scroll didn't stop. But, after turning the computer off and tonight back on (reboot) XP noted detection of new hardward, video, and used the drive I updated (seems a boot was necessary after installing the driver). The browser page now scrolls in a smooth flow. Thanks,

Good work Jerry. A lot of people, myself included fail to load those motherboard drivers after wiping or replacing a hard drive. With today's motherboards with so much built in that is an important job so that the computer can behave at it's best.
