Should I delete a quarantined virus?

I have Trend Micro. Today, while browsing the net, a flag from TN popped up saying " Virus Alert", a virus had just been detected and quarantined.

Since I was not on a file of consequence to me but instead a web page when this happened, can I simply hit the delete button on Trend Micro's quarantine page and get rid of the virus? Trends instructions were not very comprehensible.

When one empties their virus vault, how is it physically deleted from the computer as it is not ejected to the garbage bin.

It has appeared in PA, NY, and MI in the US and in all three cases a quarantine was set up. You must be near the NY quarantine. The PA quarantine was lifted recently. The disease is from Europe and you should never see it, even in a quarantine zone. If you ever see it the USDA should be notified and the tree(s) should be destroyed. Hello, I am new to this forum and have been a hobbyist for about 5 years. Window growing with lights and humidifiers (big window ^.^) and now in the process of building a green house. Obviously no expert. Began with traditional phals...now I mostly have catts and have very good success with them. With the green house coming, I decided to virus test my collection of about 80 plants and 15 were virused; ironically, ten were the "failure to thrive" group I've been hanging onto and had little reason to continue after that. But I LOVED those plants just the same. The other five have CymMV and are doing fine quarantined. Nick, if your collection is fairly valuable and/or sentimental...WHY RISK bringing in these plants? My recommendation would be to take them ONLY IF you have a separate place to nurture them before you give them away to your family and friends. Denise

You can remove those from the vault, it is great you are cleaning up the computer, but you do not need to do a System Restore that is only if you have a problem, what you need to do is clear all your restore points in case you have a bad one, this is done by turning System Restore off, now reboot the pc and turn System restore on, let us know that you have done this IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE GOOGLE "PURGE SYSTEM RESTORE" Then I want to see if this file is running on the pc(CMTsrvc.exe) using msconfig under the services tab. click start, now in the run box type msconfig, a window opens at the top click Services tab, look at all the services running you will see things like avg ect but please look for this one (CMTsrvc.exe) if it is running to the left put your mouse in the box and renove the check mark at some point you will be asked to restart, go ahead and do that, after you restart a window will poip up sayimg you have used the system configuration utility please place a check mark in the box where it says DO NOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE AGAIN.. Let us know when you completed these steps.

Delete cuts off the first letter or two of the file name then the file system can't find it.

What gets deleted is the link pointing towards the file, so if you would compare a file to a book page, deleting the file does not tear the page out of the book, but rather deletes the pageÂs index from the table of contents, represented by the file system here.

It sounds like I should not delete it since it will still be in my computer with no more record of its presence. When in quarantine, if I understand correctly, it is also still in the computer but locked up.

This problem came up once before, and I deleted the virus. So I guess it is still lurking in my computer, and I no longer have any track on it. Fortunately, no ill at least that I am aware of has come of it.

Have I got this all right?

To move an infected file, such as a virus, into an area where it cannot cause more harm. Antivirus softwares come with quarantine options so that the user also can keep track of virus activity. You can keep it there or delete it, yes it is locked up I believe it is renamed also so no chance of it getting back on the system..

When you delete you don't really delete but as Mikies says the first part of the file name is removed. This allows the computer to overwrite that portion of the hard drive when it needs to so. Your virus is probably written over by now and totally useless.

If it will make you feel more comfortable do a defrag, that should take care of the issue.

I believe most things placed in the virus vault are deleted by default after X number of days and they can cause no harm while in the vault.

Vista, the advanced command window had the 'Recover' command. Expects the full path and filename. Bingo - you can recover accidentally deleted files....... if they havent already been overwritten.
