Cause of spinach bolting. Heat or day length?
Comments (17)Steve, I used to grow spinach in both spring and fall, but now just in the fall. I direct sow seed mid-Sept to early Oct here in SC, harvest some individual leaves in Nov/Dec, it overwinters in the garden, puts on alot of growth in March, and I harvest the whole plant before it bolts in April sometime. I don;t direct sow spinach any earlier than Sept here, since the soil temp is much too warm for decent germination. Spinach seed prefers cooler temps to germinate than most veggies. I suppose you could grow transplants from seed in a cool spot inside and then plant out in mid-summer if shaded. I'm also thinking that the temp/daylength that these seedlings are exposed to indoors would affect they're growth/flowering after they're put in the garden. Dave...See Moretorquing wall anchors
Comments (2)Carol - If the beams are attached to the concrete floor and floor joists above in a way that does not allow the floor above to move up slightly when the bolts are tightened then you would be correct that they may work against you. I would try tightening a couple Grip-Tites then removing the bolts from the closest beam or beams and seeing if the Grip-Tites can then be tightened more, proving that the beams were holding them back. I think you are right, but I probably would remove all the bolts at once, just in case. Just my thought. --Rick...See Morej bolt anchor installation

Comments (2)"I have seen the ones where you drill a hole and hammer in a lead insert." Sections of rebar epoxied into holes in the existing foundation should be fine. You could also use shield anchors, but lead shilds are used with lag screws (tapered threads) and do not have good withdrawal resistance. All steel expansion anchors are much better. I would epoxy in rebar....See Morebrickeyee
