question about virus

All of a sudden I had this page pop up telling me I had all sorts of virus on it and it wants me to download and run something called AVg-770903exe. I have no idea where this scan thing came from and it tells me it can't be verified on the publisher. There is a little page also that has Windows Sescurity Alert.

Is this for real or some sort of thing trying to get me to download adn infect my computer. I ran my anti virus, free AVG and it found nothing.

Don't download that. It's a malicious program.

Use something like Malware bytes to ensure you don't have any infections now and then install a virus checker if you don't already have one. There are several decent free anti virus programs. Avira is one. AVG is another. Note that the malicious program uses a name that is similar to AVG in order to dupe people into thinking they're legitimate.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Click here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Â Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Â If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Â Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
Â The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
Â When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Â Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
Â When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
Â The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Â Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediately.

It has appeared in PA, NY, and MI in the US and in all three cases a quarantine was set up. You must be near the NY quarantine. The PA quarantine was lifted recently. The disease is from Europe and you should never see it, even in a quarantine zone. If you ever see it the USDA should be notified and the tree(s) should be destroyed. That is fine for you, but I feel ( from my experience in two zone 5 rose clubs) that it is very possible that many new cool climate gardners purchased one or more virused roses only to find them decline and die in about 5 years. And then they gave up and went to other plants. The following is what Help-Me-Find states on the subject: "Symptoms of RMV can include bright yellow banding, yellow netting, unequal leaf margins and leaf distortion, less winter hardiness than virus-free specimens, diminished flower production, reduced plant size and reduced vigor. Strains of viruses differ in their virulence. Infection by some strains is almost symptomless." H.Kuska comment. Please notice the "can include" and "less winter hardiness than virus-free specimens". I would not be surprised to find that more northern virused roses have died due to being weakened and then not able to withstand cold winters than the number of deaths from rosette virus. Since there are different strains of even the same virus and since there are expected to be different immune system efficiencies in each hybrid, there will always be examples of some virused roses living well in northern climates. .

Usually virus shows up more strongly, but it's hard to say. Also since 'Wolfsong' is a variegated canna that could be what you're seeing as well. I would watch it and see how it changes as the weather gets cooler or conditions become a little stressful.

Anyone here use SPYBOT ? I've been using it for 2 years in addition to my Avanquest software and it seems pretty good. It's free and has weekly updates.

spybot is somewhat out dated, it is still ok as a like 3rd line backup but Malwarebytes and superantispyware are the 2 best to use now.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
these are both free, you can have both on your pc at the same time no problem since you are running the scans manually. I would open the programs hit update, then do full scans once a week. Always update first!
