Electolux Counter-Depth French Door with IQ-Touch

Hi all,

Ok, so I have seen a LOT of posts warning not to buy Electrolux refrigerators. I had planned to get the

Counter-Depth French Door Refrigerator with IQ-TouchÂ (EI23BC36IS) and my cabinets have been ordered to fit around this frige.

For those of you out there with experience with this refrigerator or other Electrolux refrigerators, do you think I should look into Kitchen Aid or Whirlpool instead given the poor track record these new friges seem to have so far?

I really like mine. I didn't get the model with the ice in the door. I do have to call Electrolux about the ice maker in the freezer drawer because the bar to stop it from making ice when the drawer is full doesn't seem to stop soon enough. Hopefully it just needs an adjustment.

We have this particular model. My recommendation would be to buy from a company that really prides itself on customer service. The first one we had had a damaged compressor fan and was terrible. It took several phone calls but we were able to get it replaced. Right now it is a lot quieter than before but still has moments when it is noisy tho not as bad as it could be and luckily for not too long. Oh and buy the extended service contract....

Because of reading so many problems about water/ice in the door and ice makers in general, we turned our icemaker off and didn't connect the water line to avoid those problems.

We looked at those other frigs and didn't like the layout of them. I really like the totally enclosed deli drawer so I can control the humidity for my produce. I only found one other 36" freestanding that had it, a GE Monogram model, and have heard nothing but problems with that one too.... sigh...

Overall, we like ours. We find it easy to find things and easy to keep clean and organized. The freezer takes some getting used to. It is easy to pile food into the bottom and then have to rearrange it because it doesn't close with that arrangement. Otherwise, it is fine and we like the small drawer on the door for small things like frozen burritos...

If you are going to change, then I would do it now because the KA IIRC are significantly taller than the E'luxe...

In Wave Touch, the controls seem to disappear when the appliance is unused; they appear (with a beep) when you touch the control panel glass. IQ Touch visibly displays all controls all the time. Two guesses: its as if Wave Touch uses black glass, and IQ Touch uses clear glass; perhaps IQ Touch came out first. So -- unless there are reliability issues between these displays that I haven't heard about -- its a matter of preference. How you want this fridge to appear in your kitchen most of the time? I have (and like) Wave Touch on my E'lux range, but some prefer always visible controls (at least, considering the cost).

I have owned this fridge since 2010 (or its immediate predecessor). EI23BC56IS is the model I have - counter-depth, IQ-touch, French Door with dispensers. I like the fridge and it functions well except I have experienced two issues (one big - one smaller): 1. My ice maker has broken 3 times. Each time E-Lux paid for the repair (including the third time being outside of warranty). However, it also appeared to me that each time they were trying to fix a true product defect (i.e., swapping circuit boards, sealing the ice unit, replacing motors, etc.). The third-repair has seemed to work as I have had no further issue -- so maybe they have this worked out. That said - I do find the ice maker to slow in dispensing, and easily jammed up with ice. The ice maker also often makes odd noises -- but at least it works now. 2. The other issue is that the freezer door sometimes does not shut completely (usually caused by user error - with the freezer being over-stuffed and the upper try coming off its track and jamming the door). The issue is that the door shuts just enough that the open door alert does not go off. Just be careful to make sure that the door is shut. I have the E-Lux DW, double oven and gas cooktop as well. The Fridge would be the one item I would not recommend given the issues I had with the ice maker (and I think many others did too). See the Amazon link below. Sorry, typo! I meant the 2060, a freestanding right-door opening fridge, which is what I actually linked. I will link it again here. @tinyone. Can you provide measurements around the cut out and the distance in inches from the interior of the cutout to the wall? Without that information it's hard to truly help. @sjhockey - I agree that a right opening door is not ideal. But it offers the best chance of opening enough so the fridge actually can be used. Unless there is enough clearance it can't open left because even a 0-clearance hinge fridge has a handle which will hit the wall and may not fully open. But we can only make "if this" suggestions without the facts/ measurements. Given the facts the OP has posted so far, I don't believe the agent is right. I think I am right. But that could change depending on how far it is from the fridge cutout to the wall on the left and how much space there is between the ovens and the cut out on the right. And if there's enough space for the door to swing open in the aisle between the fridge wall and the island. @tiny -- if you are doing other work in the house, a competent GC could make this all go away very easily. Depending -- again -- on the current location of the electrical outlet in the fridge cut out and the location of the water line it might need an electrician and a plumber in addition to a carpenter who is good enough to do fine finish work and alter an existing cabinet well enough to reuse pieces as needed. If a GC has a good crew, that's the way to go. The percentage paid to him will be worth it as he will be responsible. But I wouldn't let anyone touch anything until you ID a fridge that can function in the space somehow and after you've identified what will need to be altered more or less. Then I'd meet with the GC with the spec sheets in front of you to discuss his suggestions on how to go forward and what it will cost. Only after that would I make a purchase. OTOH, if the cabinet store that furnished the cabinets is known, might be worth a call to them. But then no one person is responsible. I also would be careful about where I purchase the fridge. It weighs 400 pounds. It needs to go from the truck to the door of the house closest to the kitchen. When my fridge was delivered it was to the bottom of my driveway -- the contractor had to bring it up. Don't assume anything. Ask a ton of questions. I'd want people there with the right equipment and in the right numbers to bring it into without ruining the floors, nicking the door, denting it or at worst -- dropping it. We ended up cancelling the Electrolux CD FD order because I found way too many issues from consumers with it, including here. Instead we bought a Samsung CD FD Model # RF23HCEDTSR. We have been VERY happy with it. I must say that it just swallowed up everything that we had in our old refrigerator and with plenty of room leftover. We opted for the CD because I didn't want a big beast sticking out into the walkway. I've seen too many new refrigerators in kitchens now that look out of place because they are just so big and stick out. My one gripe is that manufacturers charge so much more for the smaller box but oh well. We knew we were going to have to spend more to get the CD so we planned ahead. I specifically went back to Samsung because I liked how easily the bottom freezer drawer opens up. Both of us have bad backs. The LED lighting is exceptional and makes it so easy to see everything inside. No regrets at all. Our power flickers off from time to time and I now know exactly the temp inside the frig & freezer without opening the door. And the idiot chime reminds my DH to close the door when he forgets! For my own peace of mind we bought the extended warranty so we'll see how it goes. Ask me again in 5 years, LOL. Bottom line, we're very happy with it going on 3 months now. I hope that helps. gwentm and earth_pal - thanks for the feedback. I guess I'll go ahead with the Electrolux. I am planning to get the one without the water/ice in the door.

Gwentm - you have the one without the water/ice in the door -- does it have a water tap inside the door? Somehow I read that it has a water tap inside, but the model I looked at did not have a tap insde... Not a deal breaker, just curious.

I just checked mine and there is no tap in this model. Maybe one of the more expensive ones do. We had already set up a water filter at a sink, so we were not looking for this option.

There is no water tap in our refrigerator. We have a separate undersink Everpure filter tied to a combo Insinkerator water and instant hot (& also to our ice maker). So it was never an issue for us but, if we didn't have that, it wouldn't have changed the decision we made. Called Electrolux and we do need a replacement sensor arm for the ice maker. Doesn't seem like a big deal so far. Our refrigerator is very quiet.The only noise I hear are the ice cubes dropping into the bucket. The more full the bucket, the less you hear it. The instructions say to discard the first 2 buckets made before using the ice so it has been more active in the beginning than normal which is why I must have noticed it.

@earth_pal, I remember reading about your issues...ugh! We are still considering this just a tiny bit because we did like the interior design far better than anything but the Fisher & Paykel, which has equally problematic reviews. Wondering if you bought yours locally, and if so if you have (positive or negative) recommendations on the retailer---they did eventually replace it, but sounds like it took a while? Would love to know where (even just generally, since I imagine I could figure it out from there!) you ended up buying it, if it was from a local dealer. Thanks---and glad it finally worked out!

Artemis, Thanks for your kind words. Ironically, the Fisher/Paykel small frig appealed to me too. Especially since there are two of us and the E'luxe is not full right now... ;;)

We purchased ours from Standards of Excellence in San Jose, CA. I gather from our salesperson, Gabriel, that E'luxe was not wanting to deal but SofE forced their hand somehow. Don't know if you are in the area, but I do recommend them if you are. SofE is having a warehouse clearance sale this coming weekend I believe up in Rohnert Park. Can pm you details if of interest to you.

And yes, it was the interior layout of the E'luxe that I really like. As a vegetarian, it is great to have lots of room for produce right now! :))

Thanks! Yep, we're local (and I'd actually even seen the warehouse sale notice on the SofE site, so it may be worth a trek up to the North Bay...) We do have an Electrolux dealer in town as well who's supposed to be pretty good, but no idea how their prices stack up so it would be a good opportunity to compare, too. So hard to know what the right decision is on stuff like this!
