Email address hacked

Apparently my email address has been hacked & I'm being inundated w/ messages of mail being returned as undeliverable, mainly from email sent to German addresses, altho a few are from other European countries.

Any way to interrupt this flood, other than blocking & sending to spam?

Microsoft Outlook 2010. Can't change the address; too many other problems if I do:(

Thank you, Aurora, great explanations. Lucky, very funny! Silvana, no, you did not get hacked and don't have to do anything. I got hacked because I did not follow my own advice. I got an email from an unfamiliar address on a topic I did not recognize with a link that was also unfamiliar. So, there were three clues. But I clicked away. That is all it takes, one click, for a hacker to be able to clone something that resembles a person's name and address. To get rid of a spam email, just send it to the spam folder on your email account, then empty the spam folder. You can change your password if you want. I put a more complete explanation on a new thread. However, Aurora explained it better than I could! It would be good if the Moderators would read this and remove the two posts with the bogus links on them. I will try to contact the Moderators to have those two posts by the hacker removed from the threads, however, I don't think that was what caused the hacking of my email. Well, I'm sorry to have been part of the problem. Yes, Karyn, it erased my email address book and hubby's too. I feel kinda leery of opening any emails now. I have received several from Mariam recently with no subject that I deleted, and another that was suspicious, saying someone "needed some advice"- too close to someone "needing your help"!!! I let everyone know that I could by posting on FB but not everyone is on Facebook. Good luck getting back on track, whomever was hacked. My aunt was even hacked from me, and she is 77- what a PITA for her!! ~Brenda B

This email looked like any other I would get from a friend. That's the problem, nothing suspicious at all about it and I'm always pretty alert having been trained by the very best in the business. It was not spam, it was much worse than that. The purpose was "phishing" to collect personal information and target us for fraud.

I have some long passwords. Throw in capitals and you get another 26 options, then there are special characters. Most nowadays require at least one captital, one lower case and one special, and at least eight overal, and remembering these gets really tricky, but writing them down, and especially putting them in your browser's autofil, is the least secure of all! The long ones really work pretty well and are easier to remember. If you have to have a special and captital, it's not as secure as random, but you can set single rules, such as the seventh letter will be the only capital, and the fifth character will be an asterisk. If it's not someone who has watched you, or heard your keyboard, i.e., if it's just a 'bot, that's just about as secure as if they were random. The most secure password is long and totally random, but good luck remembering if you don't use it several times daily. And even then, you have to hope the hacker can't reverse engineer the encoding in the recognition system (that's nigh on impossible, but people do the impossible daily).

Do you use Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com, AOL? Outlook 2010 may be the client you use to manage your email, but you can check and/or modify settings at your actual provider's site to help with things. You may, for example, be able to check past activity and see if/when an unfamiliar IP address was used to login to your account. You should also check to see if settings have changed (a new forwarding address added? a new filter added? an alternate email or cell phone number added/changed? Etc.).

But at the same time it's not necessarily the case that your account has been hacked. If all you're getting is 'email undeliverable' kinds of emails, it's possible that your email address was merely spoofed by some spammer, which doesn't require their having access to your account. When the emails couldn't reach their intended recipients for whatever reasons, they were returned to the spoofed/fake address used to send them: yours. If this is the case, it might just be a brief inundation of email which will quickly subside once all the undeliverables are 'returned' to you. In the meantime, you could create a temporary filter at your webmail site telling it to delete all emails with a return to sender type subject. Other than that, I don't think there's anything to do to stop the flood. :-(

Time to check for malware and viruses. The hijacking of an Outlook addressbook has been a reoccurring concern for as long as I can remember.
