Anyone Else Having problems with Compaq?

I've had a couple of Compaq desktops thru the years and have no complaints, they were usually replaced to move up. When I went looking for a laptop I went straight for Compaqs, finding their current prices very attractive. In the last month I've had 2 Compaq Presario CQ60s, both with bad card readers. I know that that's not a really big issue but I do a lot of work with pictures, Windows Movie Maker, etc. The 1st one went bad after working for about a week. HP tech support advised me to send it in for service but since it was about 2 weeks old I opted to send it back to the vendor for a refund. I got the 2nd one 3 days ago and the card reader didn't work right from the start. I worked with HP tech support with 1 online chat for over an hour, when their instructions didn't work I emailed them repeatedly til they finally instructed me to do a system recovery when all other fixes failed to resolve the problem. Right at the start of the recovery I got an error message, the laptop went to black screen then a message came up saying "reboot manager missing" HP thinks the recovery partition is corrupted and wanted to send a set of recovery discs. I asked if I could just take it to a local service center and was told that I would be charged if there was no hardware problem. I decided to return the laptop to ther place of purchase this evening since I have hundreds of $ invested and I don't feel that I should have had to spend this much time trying to fix problems with a new machine and now have to wait a week for discs, mess with it some more, then possibly not be able get it working in the end. I've spent the better part of any free time I've had for 2 days either emailing HP or messing with the laptop. Is anyone else having Compaq problems and am I being unreasonable to expect the thing to work out of the box after setup?

Sorry about your problems, that is but one of the reasons why I have stayed with Toshiba

I personally like HP products a lot however I have not had a Compaq product, the card readers that they use in the computers built in are unfortunately of rather low quality and they often die an early death, that is why I just get a stand alone multi card reader to plug into the usb port and use it instead, they are inexpensive and work and are small so very easy to keep around, on my desktop they plug right into my usb hub on my desk. If it were me I would get a new laptop and if the card reader worked for a while be happy and when it dies move on to a portable.

Heres what I am doing I removed my deck , you need a rubber bungie strap ,2 eyebolts with locknuts and washers, now with the dek off of the mower remove the blade break spring, next ensure the blade belt control lever swings freely,now insert one end of the bungie strap into the hole on the blade control lever(where the pto spring goes) now stretching the bungie cord (yes the blade control lever will engage) find a path clear of any moving belts ,pullys ect to the outside of the deck . Now find a flat spot and drill a hole for one of the eyebolts and install the eyebolt,now remove the S hook from the bungie cord and push the bungie cord through the eyebolt(again ensure that you have a clear path nothing will touch the bungie strap when the blades are turning) now find a spot on the foot rest (clear under and on top ) install the other eyebolt. now put the s hook back on the free end of the bungie cord and install the blade brake spring. Now if you hook the bungie cord to the eyebolt on the footrest the blades should activate and when you unhook the bungie cord the blade brake will engage stopping the blades.

I don't have many clients who use induction cooktops or ranges nor do I recommend them very often. Seems to me that the more electronic/computerized appliances become, the more apt they are to go awry. Getting to the point where we'll need Geek Squad IT support for our kitchens and that is not a happy thought! But to answer your question, you basically have two options: Get Wolf to refund your money and buy a different model from a different manufacturer, or ask Wolf to exchange it for a gas or electric model. If you bought this unit via a reputable appliance dealer, enlist your salesperson to help you navigate this situation. They certainly don't want to risk the chance of bad Yelp reviews or miss the opportunity for you to be a repeat customer. Oh, and one other thought: if you happen to have purchased this item with a credit card, the credit card companies sometimes have purchase protection services. If the product is unsatisfactory, you might be able to get some or all of your money back.

When you are on the front page of the Harvest forum, you should see two different search forms. The one to use for results from Harvest only is the one on the top. It doesn't show up well, because it is white on white with pale gray lettering. But the form is to the right (at least in my browser) of the HOUZZ logo which is in the upper left corner. It is working for me today.

Anyone else having problems with HMF?

This just in... "We have run several different website malware scanners against HMF and all have come back negative. We have also contacted Avast about a potential false-positive and we are requesting further information. Unless a HMF guest reports otherwise, we have concluded this is an Avast specific issue. Temporarily turning off the Avast extension resolves the issue but we recognize that is not a desirable long term solution. Avast is a superior security product but appears to at times be a bit too aggressive. We are eager to learn what has triggered this change as we have not made ANY recent code changes to HelpMeFind. Best regards, HMF Support" And, this short-term fix suggested by an RHA site user... "My AVG anti virus protection was doing that too. I have uninstalled it for now and put in Bitdefender temporarily. This happened to me once 3 or 4 years ago. Eventually AVG sorted it self out and I reinstalled it. Hope this helps."

I love my desktop Compaq, also like using the online help, which is like a chat, and they are super helpful, and it's 24/7 Free When I got mine several years ago, I immediately burned about 3/4 CD's incase a major recovery was necessary, it came up on my screen telling me to do this, didn't you do this, it's like a copy/back-up of XP I guess?
Did the same with our Acer laptop, which we also like and works great!Would have nothing but HP or Compaq- same thing because of the Free help & support always and 24/7

I've 2 Compaq's but it was years ago. The only problem I had were user problems.

I don't think Compaq has any more problems than other mass market computer manufacturer. I've had several that were great and one that I was less-than-thrilled about. Every once-in-a-while you'll be the one who gets the lemon. For example, I have a plasma Panasonic tv, which I bought in part because they have one of the very lowest repair rates. However, the screen failed completely after only 14 months. This doesn't mean that I think it's a bad brand. I was just one of the folks in the 2% failure rate group. You may just have gotten the short straw with that particular Compaq machine.

I love my Compaq desktop too, it's what I'm using right now. I didn't burn recovery discs b/c the setup info said that a recovery partition was built in and the discs were unnecessary. I've learned my lesson. If and when I get another laptop I will burn the discs if possible. I really like the 24/7 tech support at HP also, that was one of the reasons I was drawn to the HP/Compaq models, that and the fact that I have had good experiences with Compaq in the past. I just might give them another try and if the card reader goes I'll take Raven's advice and get a portable unit. Just bugs the heck out of me that a brand, spanking new machine has a bug.
