There are no fractions on the keyboard. Is there a better way to write 1-1/2...etc.

If you hold down the alt key while typing 0188 you will get Â¼
alt and 0189 gives Â½
alt and 0190 gives Â¾
I don't know of any others

Thank you. My question doesn't relate to avoiding salt buildup in the soil, though. I am asking about ways to facilitate gas exchange at the root zone in soils that lack proper aeration for this to happen passively. Since the act of watering displaces soil gasses, pushing out what is already there and drawing in fresh oxygen behind the water, I was curious if watering on a more frequent schedule than necessary would help mitigate the lack of passive gas exchange. Of course, you would have to manually drain the PWT each watering. There seem to be two benefits of a highly aerated container soil, from what I have read and understood so far, and they are closely related: 1. Reduces or eliminates areas that allow no gas exchange (the dreaded PWT - waterlogged areas with insufficient oxygen available for roots to respire) 2. Reduces or eliminates areas that allow insufficient gas exchange (compacted areas where the available oxygen is quickly used up and the other gasses, byproducts of root respiration, end up trapped instead of being able to diffuse out to allow new oxygen in). Now, 1. can be addressed, in part or completely, by the methods described in this thread. Ways to manually drain the soil's PWT when the soil is too dense for it to drain away passively. Are there similar strategies for dealing with 2. manually when a soil is too dense for reasonable gas exchange to occur passively? Will a more frequent watering schedule act as a manual gas exchange?

Hi Al and others, I would appreciate advice on saving sick/dying Picea glauca, in pic.1, please. I bought it on post Xmas sale and it was ~50cm tall, looking healthy, with very bushy top. I repotted it without much root cleaning to keep most original soil with fungus, which I read Picea, like other pines, needs. I planted the rootball with old soil into gritty mix, mostly pine bark fines with seramice, with a bit of gravel, see in pic.2 very "gritty" indeed :); trunk is ~1/2" at the bottom). I used a biggish pot to let it grow freely for a year or two. I also cut the top to encourage lower branches growth but it never happened. Water it when the pot feels light, ~ weekly (it is early autumn here in Sydney) by bottom watering in a bucket, then drain well by keeping the pot at ~45 degrees for a while. Use diluted Nitrosol liquid plant food every two weeks. Keep it on sun for 2-3 hrs, then half shade. Despite all my care (or coz of it ? :), the picea never showed any new growth but started developing warning signs for last 2-3 weeks. Those few thin branches started dying. Their stem turns from brown to greyish-green and gets soggy before dying. See in pic 3&4, that branch in front which is dying now, with grey stem. Other branch died a few days ago. Only three normally looking branches are left. But I am afraid they are facing same fate. Anything I can do to rescue my future picea bonsai at all? Thanks and cheers, Sergey

Susan, I like that...."Susanet". LOL I wish I could just not water, but then I know that everything would likely die, and I am not going to let 10 years of planting go down the drain. And, you know, everything I plant anymore is either native or incredibly well adapted. Anything that I planted that didn't make it through the 2005-06 drought/wildfires was replaced with native stuff. I do have some small prickly pear cactus plants that sprouted this fall. They have a love-hate relationship with our climate. When it is dry here, they sprout and grow for a few years. Then, when a really rainy year like 2004 rolls around, they drown/rot/die. And so it goes.... It is hot and dry today, and I guess it will be hotter and drier tomorrow. Then, here comes another cold front..... Dawn

We have sliding windows, Milgard's lowest level vinyl ones. I hate them (sliders in general I think- ugliest style out there IMO) but there is a really easy fix for limiting the amount they open. Hardware stores sell these little screw/clamp things that you just place at your desired window-stopping point and screw on. It is possible that an older child could (7-8 and up) could figure out how to unscrew them. Otherwise, the screw thing works just fine. We have them in the kids bedrooms (courtesy of an anxiety ridden grandmother).

My laptop does not have a separate numerical keyboard---just the numbers on the top row. Is is possible to use the alternate key codes using those?

Try this:
MS Word> Insert > Symbols> Pick/highlight the fraction you will be using from the selections offered (for example: Â¼ )> click "AutoCorrect" button in lower left corner > check box "Replace text as you type" and fill in "1/4" in the blank space/box marked "replace"> click "Add"> click "ok"
Now each time you type the fraction 1/4 your computer will automatically correct it to Â¼

This is all so complicated. Geezzzz, can't they simplify this stuff??

Put a few fractions on the keyboard and an Underline?

Give me an old typewriter any day.
(took me 10 minutes to put this together, I bet it doesn't work).

You bet what doesn't work? From where I am I can see that typewriter is underlined in your post.
