Problem with Hibernation & Keyboard

Starting about a year ago, I began putting my computer into Hibernation, as opposed to a full Startup/Shutdown every time. It just takes too long! I try to trim down any old Startup items I no longer use, but it still takes forever.

Anyway, I've been having a problem with my keyboard. I use an old Compaq wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I'd say about every 3-8 times I pull my computer out of hibernation, my mouse works but my keyboard doesn't. This causes me to have to now do a complete restart, which now takes even longer than if I had just did a full boot.

I've been inside the root directory, and there are drivers for the mouse, but not for the keyboard. The wireless receiving device has a USB plug for the mouse and a PS2 connector for the keyboard, so I guess that's why I can find drivers for the mouse. But why does the keyboard give me problems? If it's a PS2 connector, it doesn't need drivers!

HP (who now owns Compaq) was no help.

If someone can at least offer an idea of where I can look, that would be a big help! Thanks!

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but I'm going to suggest that you replace the keyboard with a new one. In my experience, keyboards tend to fail more frequently than a lot of other pieces of hardware, and it may be a better use of your time and money if you to shell out a few bucks than continue to spend more time on this frustration. I've had keyboards that started getting quirky before, and, after spending hours looking for various fixes, finally ended up capitulating.

Often you can simply unplug and plug it back in. Let it find it again. It's more likely a Windows issue than the keyboard.

Maybe somebody will have the answer but I might try starting without the keyboard or mouse or other perificals plugged in,, maybe start removing one thing at a time.. to see if it starts the boot process and lights up the monitor with the missing keyboard or mouse errors. Would think something is shorted or open circuit ,,, not getting full power when you press your power switch and the bios is sitting there on its little battery seeing the power applied,,, bios is waiting on the power button to be pressed to wake it up. Last it knew it was in the hibernate state. Did you hibernate it ... then it broke ?

Advice/suggestions from a layman: Control panel>mouse> open it up and do some changes then put it where you want it and try. Control Panel>keyboard . move those sliders around and check it out. Vacuum out the keyboard. I have a lap top, but I use a external mouse and keyboard as I have it set up similar to a PC. Not very portable, but it is seldom used outside my home. Grady

Hi Nonnie, I just saw this on tech support guy forum. Do you have one of the following applications installed on your pc: Pgpdisk version 6.02 and 6.5 Adobe Type Manager version 4.0 If you do, then you will need to reinstall the most current driver for your keyboard because the above two applications sometimes corrupt your keyboard driver. Laptop (work)...Hibernate & unplug...it takes too long to restart it...no patience I guess! LOL! I do try to shut it down at least once a week or so to clear the memory...or if there are updates to be installed...or if it starts to run too slowly. Main home computer...just leave it on unless same as above (too slow, updates). It does shut down the monitor after a certain amount of time (don't remember what we have it set at) We do put the cable modem on "Standby" when not home or in bed...cuts the outside link.

Worth a try. However, since I'm thinking this is functionally equivalent to -- but quicker than -- rebooting the whole computer (which the OP has tried many times), it may not be a permanent fix. If that doesn't resolve it, I'm sticking with my original advice.

What you both say makes sense, I'll have to try unplugging it the next time, thanks, but yes, when I do a full reboot, the keyboard works fine.

I used to have that happen it would not recognize it till I unplugged then re-plugged the keyboard then it would find it and work, luckily I have a KVM switch on my desktop so it was easy to get to do do this, I love a wireless mouse but just can not get a good wireless keyboard that I find worth the effort so I use a wired one with virtually no problems, I mean it is on my desktop just how far will I be going with it anyway. Also make sure the receiver is not blocked or out of line from the unit.
