built-in card reader quit working

I have an HP Pavilion a6600f, Vista. I've had it a couple of months. It has a built-in 15-in-1 card reader. It has worked fine until today. I use an SD card that I use in my camera. Today nothing happened when I plugged it in, and when I looked in Device Manager I couldn't see anything that I thought was a card reader. I checked in my computer, and the only removeable storage device it showed was the CD drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have an up to date antivirus protection program on your computer besides the trial version (probably expired) of whatever came with it

I have the free Avast and I believe it updates automatically.

Jeanette, so glad to hear the mascotts are both resting safely in the infirmary. I see that we can't send any more of these guys out on road trips. they must not be as tough as old nuts the squirrel... though he did get a bit beat up in his travels too. I have been reading magsfrom the box that Remy sent and need to send thanks for the goodies that were included in the box. The special fall Country Living Gardener is terrific is beautiful with so many good articles and the sunflowers on the front cover. Extra special, thanks. Peanut butter kisses are favorites. My brother worked for years for the company that makes them and they always bring happy memories. MMmmmthanks Remy, the watch is so pretty. Thank you so much. My watches are so totally functional and utilitarian it will be a treat to wear something Pretty for a change. Sue, did you make the soap? I want to make some too and have some questions. It sure smells good. I love stuff that smells good. The garden stake and pink glads will go out front in the spring. and the thank you cards are both attractive and practical. Love the old timey wheelbarrow and wish I could find one for my yard. What a treasure that would be. There are also recipe cards and stickers.... hope I didn't miss anything but there were a lot of goodies especially considering how much good reading material was in there too. I appreciate the Green Scene mags as they are close enough to give me ideas of things to plant and places to visit. I've been reading those and enjoying them a lot. I might decide to join PHS myself. When the birdie that is at Jeanettes finds her way home that will be the end of this swap at least until after Christmas. I figure most of us will be pleanty busy from now to then. My mistake raven. I went back into my router settings and found this. Looks like I do have a Mac address. Will doing this help with the PDN? I'm a bit confused....big surprise? âº MAC Address MAC is an acronym for Media Access Controller. All network components including cards, adapters, and routers, have a unique "serial number" called a MAC address. Your ISP may record the MAC address of your computer's adapter and only let that particular computer connect to the Internet service. When you install the router, the Router's own MAC address will be "seen" by the ISP and may cause the connection not to work. Belkin has provided the ability to clone (copy) the MAC address of the computer into the router. This MAC address, in turn, will be seen by the ISP's system as the original MAC address and will allow the connection to work. If you are not sure if your ISP needs to see the original MAC address, simply clone the MAC address of the computer that was originally connected to the modem. Cloning the address will not cause any problems with your network. To Clone your MAC address, make sure that you are using the computer which was ORIGINALLY CONNECTED to your modem before the Router was installed. Click the "Clone MAC address" button. Click "Apply Changes". Your MAC address is now cloned to the router. My netbook and other computer connects just fine with out the cloning. I don't know much about this router stuff..*Ã*

yes we are both enjoying them, it is a good additional reader for me and is my husbands first. It is so light weight compared to my PDN it is very easy to hold. I have added some books on the SD card also. For $49 for us it was a worthwhile purchase. I do not know if they will re-run that sale price or not, I told a friend about it and he found a CVS with several he bought all of them to give as Christmas gifts.

Before you get your knickers all knotted, do some research and not just take the hysterics flaunted by "news" programs. There is an RFID chip in the cards that can be read, but not all cards have them. I looked at mine and none of mine have this chip. And as said all you need to do is punch a hole in the chip's logo and it's destroyed. A paper punch, a nail, whatever you have handy. People are also all worked up over the info supposedly contained on the magnetic strips. You actually don't need the magnetic strip to make most credit card purchases. They can key in the card number manually but stores don't like to do this because it costs them more in transaction fees. Way back when I used to demagnitize the strips purposely but found out that was just paranoia, just like the paranoia that rages about key cards at hotels. Safety is all in the person. Azzalea, I recall you lost something like $1200.00. The most I can lose on a credit card is $50 and that's covered by my insurance. I'm far more concerned carrying $1200.00 than I am carrying a credit card! But with you it's different so that's fine. And considering I've received WAY more than $50 in cashback it'd still be profitable to use the card even if I lost one. Which I guess I did, but it cost me nothing more than a phone call to get it stopped and replaced. Who replaces your cash? I'm certain your insurance company does not. I use pay-at-the-pump so there's no way they can "borrow" my card. I'm not quite sure how this happens as often as you describe. Please explain. I guess we disagree on "so much safer" obviously. Chisue, I use a double thickness of heavy duty foil hat. They don't know what I'm thinking now! One chain around here tried that thumbprint scan charge which didn't last long. I laughed at them when they tried to get me to sign up for that.

I would contact HP since it is so new and still under warranty and ask them, it may be it was a defective part and needs to be replaced.
You can of course always get a stand alone card reader for quite cheap and plug into a usb port or usb hub and use that.

I tried shutting the computer down and turning it back on, rather than restarting, and it's working now.

I have the exact, same problem with a Dell desktop. I never bothered calling them because it takes half a day to get someone and it would probably work. Sometimes it does, other times not.

Restarting is the only thing which works. Also, if I use 'safely remove hardware' it stops working and will not work without a restart. I never use 'safely remove..' anymore and take my chances by just removing the card. I've done this for a year and so far I haven't lost anything.

That's what it's supposed to do. It "removes" that drive which is now out-of-commission until you restart.

Instead, right click the drive the card is in, then, in the drop-down menu, click Eject.

When the name of that drive (Canon, or whatever) changes to the capital letter (E, F or whatever), remove the card. (No need to restart.)

If your situation is that you have one particular kind of card you use a lot -- and want uploaded to your computer a lot -- strongly advise spending $20.00 for dedicated reader for that type of card with USB2 connection. I suspect you may find it much more convenient and probably a lot faster reading/writing also.

Most mfg use these multi-reader things as a marketing ploy to make people think they're getting lots of extra value by buying their box. In fact, they slapped the cheapest, slowest pieces of dung they could find into those boxes that still allowed them to advertise "multi-media reading kiosk built-in!" They're typically very slow and very troublesome.

HP is especially famous for this, but they all do it. I have little doubt that's what you've got.

Jean, what I was trying to explain was, if I click 'safely' and remove the card, the drive will not start up again with another card. I must shut the computer down and restart. It's a pain when I'm using a card where I am taking photos and need to shoot some, put it in to view, take it out and put it in again. If I hit 'safely' I could not put the card back in without restarting the computer. If I just take the card out, without hitting 'safely', it will work when I put the card back in again.
