built-in card reader quit working

I have an HP Pavilion a6600f, Vista. I've had it a couple of months. It has a built-in 15-in-1 card reader. It has worked fine until today. I use an SD card that I use in my camera. Today nothing happened when I plugged it in, and when I looked in Device Manager I couldn't see anything that I thought was a card reader. I checked in my computer, and the only removeable storage device it showed was the CD drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have an up to date antivirus protection program on your computer besides the trial version (probably expired) of whatever came with it

I have the free Avast and I believe it updates automatically.

A treasured moment in my life was the chance to sit down and talk with Adelma Simmons shortly before her death. The conversation was wide ranging and, of course, included the phenomenon of gardening as a hobby in the 80's. As Mrs. Simmons is undoubtedly the author who brought herbs out of the closet and into the mainstream, her comments suprised me. Though she encouraged anyone with a pen to give it a shot, her concern was that the garden book world would be overrun with "fluff" and little substance. This prophecy seems to have come full circle. There are just so many "how to design a border" books that one can read and gain from. Publishers took full advantage of the surge in interest and flooded the market for a quick buck. I really think that this is why there is a decline. Those of us who are serious gardeners (serious enough to "talk" about it on a daily basis with webfriends) will always buy anything that's there of interest. But the backyard hobbiest only wants one or two coffee table books, not anything of substance. So, while book sales may be declining, it could be that there's not a lot out there to buy that hasn't been rehashed many times before. You're right, Ginny, everyone wants to see their name in print and publishers take full advantage to make a quick buck despite the quality. I admit that I have stopped buying gardening books en masse. I don't have the room, nor the time, to read 10 or 15 new books at a clip. Substance seems to be what's missing. "How To's" have given way to "look how lovely this is." The "lovely" books rarely mention the financial part of designing and implementing a full-blown garden worthy of publication. So, IMHO, while I feel for the writers whose rights are contracted away, and I feel for those of us with this plant passion who can't get enough, I give Amy all the credit in the world for doing an ad hoc "market survey" and not putting out pages for the sake of putting out pages. And, I truly still believe, that the masses sway the market. The decline in sales is a perfect example of this. People still have money, people still have interest, and now the publishers need to catch up. Martie

Jeanette, so glad to hear the mascotts are both resting safely in the infirmary. I see that we can't send any more of these guys out on road trips. they must not be as tough as old nuts the squirrel... though he did get a bit beat up in his travels too. I have been reading magsfrom the box that Remy sent and need to send thanks for the goodies that were included in the box. The special fall Country Living Gardener is terrific is beautiful with so many good articles and the sunflowers on the front cover. Extra special, thanks. Peanut butter kisses are favorites. My brother worked for years for the company that makes them and they always bring happy memories. MMmmmthanks Remy, the watch is so pretty. Thank you so much. My watches are so totally functional and utilitarian it will be a treat to wear something Pretty for a change. Sue, did you make the soap? I want to make some too and have some questions. It sure smells good. I love stuff that smells good. The garden stake and pink glads will go out front in the spring. and the thank you cards are both attractive and practical. Love the old timey wheelbarrow and wish I could find one for my yard. What a treasure that would be. There are also recipe cards and stickers.... hope I didn't miss anything but there were a lot of goodies especially considering how much good reading material was in there too. I appreciate the Green Scene mags as they are close enough to give me ideas of things to plant and places to visit. I've been reading those and enjoying them a lot. I might decide to join PHS myself. When the birdie that is at Jeanettes finds her way home that will be the end of this swap at least until after Christmas. I figure most of us will be pleanty busy from now to then. I always do and wait for the light to go out before removing. But when I put it back in - no light, no card. Doesn't show up at all...wiggle, wiggle, nothing. I'm thinking there's something wrong with the reader. Had a problem a while ago, called Dell, they had me do something in Bios, which worked, but now it's doing it again. Difference is, restarting gets it to work, before it didn't. Still under warranty so I think I'll have to make another call. Pain in the neck. Thanks, Jane

My mistake raven. I went back into my router settings and found this. Looks like I do have a Mac address. Will doing this help with the PDN? I'm a bit confused....big surprise? âº MAC Address MAC is an acronym for Media Access Controller. All network components including cards, adapters, and routers, have a unique "serial number" called a MAC address. Your ISP may record the MAC address of your computer's adapter and only let that particular computer connect to the Internet service. When you install the router, the Router's own MAC address will be "seen" by the ISP and may cause the connection not to work. Belkin has provided the ability to clone (copy) the MAC address of the computer into the router. This MAC address, in turn, will be seen by the ISP's system as the original MAC address and will allow the connection to work. If you are not sure if your ISP needs to see the original MAC address, simply clone the MAC address of the computer that was originally connected to the modem. Cloning the address will not cause any problems with your network. To Clone your MAC address, make sure that you are using the computer which was ORIGINALLY CONNECTED to your modem before the Router was installed. Click the "Clone MAC address" button. Click "Apply Changes". Your MAC address is now cloned to the router. My netbook and other computer connects just fine with out the cloning. I don't know much about this router stuff..*Ã*

I would contact HP since it is so new and still under warranty and ask them, it may be it was a defective part and needs to be replaced.
You can of course always get a stand alone card reader for quite cheap and plug into a usb port or usb hub and use that.

I tried shutting the computer down and turning it back on, rather than restarting, and it's working now.

I have the exact, same problem with a Dell desktop. I never bothered calling them because it takes half a day to get someone and it would probably work. Sometimes it does, other times not.

Restarting is the only thing which works. Also, if I use 'safely remove hardware' it stops working and will not work without a restart. I never use 'safely remove..' anymore and take my chances by just removing the card. I've done this for a year and so far I haven't lost anything.

That's what it's supposed to do. It "removes" that drive which is now out-of-commission until you restart.

Instead, right click the drive the card is in, then, in the drop-down menu, click Eject.

When the name of that drive (Canon, or whatever) changes to the capital letter (E, F or whatever), remove the card. (No need to restart.)

If your situation is that you have one particular kind of card you use a lot -- and want uploaded to your computer a lot -- strongly advise spending $20.00 for dedicated reader for that type of card with USB2 connection. I suspect you may find it much more convenient and probably a lot faster reading/writing also.

Most mfg use these multi-reader things as a marketing ploy to make people think they're getting lots of extra value by buying their box. In fact, they slapped the cheapest, slowest pieces of dung they could find into those boxes that still allowed them to advertise "multi-media reading kiosk built-in!" They're typically very slow and very troublesome.

HP is especially famous for this, but they all do it. I have little doubt that's what you've got.

Jean, what I was trying to explain was, if I click 'safely' and remove the card, the drive will not start up again with another card. I must shut the computer down and restart. It's a pain when I'm using a card where I am taking photos and need to shoot some, put it in to view, take it out and put it in again. If I hit 'safely' I could not put the card back in without restarting the computer. If I just take the card out, without hitting 'safely', it will work when I put the card back in again.
