The other thing you might want to consider for your bathroom is some kind of tile. I write about kitchens and baths all the time, and one of the things that most interests me is the absolutely mind-blowing things that can be done with tile. Last month I posted what was probably the thirtieth or fortieth blog on this subject (thereÂs a link below). ThereÂs a company in Italy that makes tile that actually look a bit like lava flows from a volcano! But what blew my mind all the more was the elegance with which this concept was evoked. And the many things that can be done with it. Working in a space that small, you will, after youÂve installed the toilet and sink have a very small bathroom. But you knew that when you started. So, what happens next? If you simply install a "standard" toilet and vanity, you will be left with a nondescript room that is much too small. On the other hand you can use something like the Volcanic Designer Tiles I wrote aboutÂor, quite frankly, about a bazillion other tile designs that are available these daysÂto transform that dinky little room into something that is a real conversation piece. Paint is weird that way! It looks perfect on a strip in the store, but buy it, take it home and put it on the wall and it suddenly does some schizophrenic change into an entirely different color. :) If you really liked that particular color, find it's color strip at the store (the one that has like 5 or 6 different shades of that color) and then move one or two shades up in lightness on the same strip. Often that will keep you in the range you are looking for. It's very difficult to suggest specific colors as colors change depending on where you're located. I know that sounds weird but it so true! I'm in the mountain west and colors always look warmer here than they do in, say, the east or the north. But try the color stick approach. And totally take advantage of any little samples the paint store might have. It's a cheap way to save a big headache!

I agree with the suggestions to retain as many of the original fixtures as possible. I love period bathrooms (especially early 1900s) so much that I bought 2 old medicine cabinets off of eBay, very much like yours, when we were having our house built. The mirrors aren't perfect, but that just adds to the charm IMO. And as already noted, in your case it wouldn't be the primary mirror in that bathroom. For above the sink, I think an apothecary mirror would look great. For a small bathroom, one toilet paper storage option is to put extra roles on the handle of a plunger. We keep a plunger in our powder bathroom, and I painted the handle (it used to be bright yellow) the same white as our walls and use that to store extra rolls. It tucks into the corner so kind of disappears unless you're looking for it. Just an idea that might work for some.

juliab51 thanks for your feedback on living with a 3x8 room painted dark. It's hard for me to visualize anything, so I'm worried it will feel too small. (I'll also have a pocket door). Your vanity looks great. I was trying to figure out how they fit that dresser in the room (I had assumed I'd need to order a custom cabinet.). It looks like maybe the dresser is 1-2" narrower and they trimmed it out so the trim looks like part of the furniture (and then painted it all the same color). If so, that's brilliant. Unfortunately, I don't have a dresser that size and I'd still be on the hook for a custom fabricated counter (my understanding is that fabrication alone is more than $1k--more than the price of the entire console sink with stand). But I love that look and would do it if I were married to a fabricator ;) HALLETT & Co. thanks for your feedback. I'd love to put a medicine cabinet in there (and love the look of yours) but I don't think I can do one recessed. (we haven't demo-ed yet, but it seems unlikely, based on where we think the studs are). So you installed all tile on that one wall only? Interesting. I like that you have a bunch of art on the walls. I'm considering put original paintings in there, maybe one over the toilet and one across from the doorway when you walk in. But you did a bunch of art. Inspiring!!! (and yeah, it looks like juliab51has lots of art too. This might be a way to go (vs. using wallpaper)
