Malware AV 2009

I have a friend whose computer is infected with AV 2009 maleware. Malewarebytes Anti-Malware was recommended but the virus won't let us scan, it closes Malwarebytes down. Anybody got a good solution (besides using Firefox)?

yes she will have to go to a support forum and have them help her run the scans have her go to this forum (link below), register and start a thread there in the hi jack this area, tell them exactly what is happening as you have here and they will help her get it cleaned up. Be sure she tells them it will not allow her to run malwarebytes.

Unfortunately this malware has made it impossible for her to use the internet. That's why I'm posting for her.

I finally got my call today! I was feeling left out. Man with thick accent said he had information about my computer. I could hear kids in the background. I was in the middle of starting dinner or I think I would have "played along" for a few minutes before hanging up. Instead, I just hung up, which is the best thing anyway.

You're welcome. It was a question I never thought about before because I only use anti-malware programs that I know for sure have a good reputation so I didn't think twice about letting them loose on my machine. But the issue you were concerned about -- and worse -- could happen if one downloaded a fake anti-malware program, like those that throw up a warning screen claiming to have found all kinds of infections on your machine when you visit a compromised web site. Since they often seem legitimate, or even claim to be part of Windows, people get fooled. As long as you stick with the legitimate ones and download them from reliable web sites, you'll be fine...they're trustworthy. One added precaution: whenever I initially download even a trusted piece of software I always save it and run a scan on it before I run it.

"Unless I totally misunderstood my readings, AVs and malware detection applications are niche services. " I think this depends on the particular software, the intended message and context of the conversation. Just as an example (not intended as proselytizing), I use what I think of as Norton Anti Virus. But it's really the Norton Internet Security system. It's a suite of many, many programs and routines that handle a large number of functions. Website reputation, antivirus-malware-spyware-phishing blocking and removal, firewall, temp file cleanup, safety of files downloaded from websites or emails, email scanning, and on and on. Other than the occasional message that pops up, it's invisible. AND, it schedules scans on the fly for only when the PC is not in use. It never interrupts or delays other activity. I never touch it, never schedule anything, and almost never see anything. I think all the best in class products (there are maybe 4 or 5 best choices) are similar to what I described, comprehensive "systems". They're well worth the modest annual cost.

Once started, the rogue itself, like all other rogues, will scan your computer and state that there are numerous infections on it. If you attempt to use the program to remove any of these infections, though, it will state that you need to purchase the program first. In reality, though, the infections that the rogues states are on your computer are all legitimate files that if deleted could cause Windows to not operate correctly. Therefore, please do not trust anything it states are infections. You will need to remove this. The computer guy will probably reformat / return to factory settings.

Bean counter do you live close enough to visit the friend? If so you might consider downloading Avast along with the latest manual updates and place those on a thumb drive and take over to her.

I had a nasty computer brought here and could not get online, nor could I install Superantispyware or Malwarebytes from a thumbdrive. The AVG had been disabled, the computer was a mess. Then I tried Avast and amazingly I was allowed to install it, run the updates manually then scan. This I did in Safe mode and it removed much of my problem and that allowed me to then install the other safety programs and Highjckthis. It was a long fight but the alternative is for the friend to wipe the hard drive and start over, also a long and frustrating task.

if she has malwarebytes on the pc and it won't let it work you need to go in and rename it something other than mbam.exe rename it mars.exe or something totally unrelated to antispyware or antivirus names, then double click on the renamed file and it should let you run it. it may not allow you to go get the updates for malwarebytes however so you might need to download a fresh new version on a flash drive and take it to her and install it, renaming it before running it.
Once she has managed that then she should be able to get to the LzD forum I gave you.

Try this to get malwarebytes to run:

Cannot download Anti virus software fix
Click Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.

* Scroll down to "Non-plug and Play Drivers" and click the plus icon to open those drivers.
* Then search for TDSSserv.sys
* Let me know if you find this or not.
* If you do find it, right click on it, and select "Disable". Do not try to uninstall it.
* Also if this is found and you disable it, then reboot and see if you can run the other scans that would not run.
