how do you "drag" from trash?

I deleted a file and I want to retrieve it. I get a message that says I have to drag the item from the trash. How do I do that? Step to step instructions would be appreciated.

Click on the item you want, then click on "restore" at the top.

Not sure of the way it's done on Macs, but with Windows, right click on trash can, then Open, and either restore all items or if only one is needed, just drag it onto desktop and then send to wherever you want it.

It does depend on how diligent you are. DS, a bachelor, lives in a condo with the pull out trash and knives in the drawer above. On a recent visit I opened the drawer to get a knife and almost fell over from the smell. He had shrimp for dinner the day before, put the shells in the trash and forgot to take out the trash when he left for work the next morning. Everyone on this forum sounds very careful either about what they put in the trash or making sure it goes out. I guess the moral of the story is to know your own habits.

We also have much more recycles than trash. So I need a larger bin for recycle, and a small one for trash. I like the idea of keeping the trash smaller because it will get emptied more often too. I want to keep the pull out narrow so not to give up much cabinet space. So the trick is to find 2 trash can that are narrow, and together take up about 24" depth. The double bins I saw on Rev-a-shelf were all at least 12 - 15" wide, and much less than 24" deep. Also they are much shorter than under counter height, so not an efficient use of space. The photo from Judydel looks closest to what I want. What other brands should I look at? We also started composting recently. Right now I just use an old bread bag to collect stuff during the day, and then dump it in the compost bin after dinner clean-up. My BFF was composting years before it was fashionable. She didn't even have a disposal. She keep a small pretty ceramic pot w/lid on her counter next to the sink. She lined it with a bread bag, and collected her veggie scraps there. Every other day she would dump the contents into the compost pile. So I plan on getting a "compost pot" for my counter too.

I designed the kitchen walls to have an open space at the end of one cabinet run, near the sink and prep. area, for my alltime favorite garbage can: metal with a step-on pedal. When working with something really messy I pile stuff in a bowl, on wax paper, or similar while working, then take the few steps away to the garbage can. I'm afraid that garbage cans and recyclables under the sink, in open or closed containers, attract bugs. We live in a buggy climate and I don't use pesticides. Recyclables get piled in one area near the outside door and taken outside daily, sorted if needed.

Hi spinmom - I just stuck my foot onto my black toe kick and it's really no more than the thickness of my big toe between the bottom of the panel and the top of the pedal. Interesting, I've never considered dragging from the recycle bin. So I did a test and sure enough on my XP machine I could drag a file to the desktop.

Still, I think it better to highlight the item and click on "restore" as described in the first reply. This method will put the file back in the folder it was deleted from and, I think, take actions at the OS level if the item has a active function, say for example, if I delete program that was "installed" and I recover from the recycle bin by "restore" I think the program will again be ready to use. Not sure what happens if the file is dragged onto the desktop.

I watch and read so I too can learn...and soon forget : (

Learning is why I read here. I was surprised that problems can be solved in different ways. Buying a PC and learning to use it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Now if I could just remember what I learned. (:-((

Interesting question. It appears you have a couple of options depending on where the file came from. Based on what I have in my Trash Can at the moment:

Ordinary File - right click and choose "put back" or click on the gear icon at the top of the screen and choose "put back". You can also drag the item to the desktop or one the places in the left pane of the window.

I also happen to have a video "Podcast" (from iTunes) in my trash can at the moment. The is no "put back" option but I can drag the file to the desktop or one of the places in the left pane of the window.

Imac Snow Leopard here too! All you have to do is open the trash folder and then left click on the item you want back and you can drag it to your desktop or you can open the folder you deleted it out of and drag it right back into that folder. As long as it's in the trash you won't be able to open it, but you CAN open it from either your desktop or another folder.

I never heard of dragging things until I got my Mac, and now that I'm used to it I LOVE it, it's SO much quicker than right clicking things and then finding the right thing to click from the menu!
