Decorating for Christmas at Thanksgiving?

I'm hosting TG this year, and my son's in-laws will be coming, 4 of them. I'm so lucky because they are the greatest people and fun to be around. Since my son married 5 years ago we now spend all of the big holidays together since both our families are small. They truly are my family now.

Anyway...at TG, we women always talk about Christmas..we exchange gifts, etc., and talk about decorating , shopping..all the fun girlie talk.

Would it be appropriate if I decorate my house for Christmas at Thanksgiving, SANS tree?

I'll put the tree up a day or two after TG. I have Christmasy table linens I planned to use also.

Would this be too tacky even though I know they'll be putting their tree up the weekend after TG when they're not shopping? lol

We're not hosting Christmas, so it's the only time we can have a Christmas feel together in the "new" house. Last year I wasn't able to decorate because of the massive remodeling going on. Now I'm chomping at the bit!

Oakley, as I've grown older, I've decided we should do what makes US feel happy in our homes and yards. And not worry too much about what others think. Besides, a little bit of the 'unexpected' is good for folks, LOL. And is a great conversation starter. If doing some Christmas decorating would make you happy, go for it. If you are going to worry what others think and stress at all, then don't. Personally I think you already sound excited about the idea and should do it.

I am going to pull out some stuff the week before Thanksgiving. Some of garlands, my Village, other things that will work with my Fall decor that I don't want to give up seeing till Thanksgiving Day is past.

If you want to decorate for Christmas for TG dinner, then by all means you should. It's not whats politicallly correct. It's what makes you feel good enough to enjoy what your doing. As long as you give thanks that's the most important part I feel. This is the NOW and anything goes.

Morning, Woebegonia..The soil has to be sold in my area...Last spring, while repotting, I went to several stores looking for certain mediums.. A couple weeks ago, maybe longer, I phoned several of these stores asking if they had EarthGro, but they all said, they never heard let alone sold this soil. Feel like I'm in a Twilight Zone episode..lol. BTW, I reread your post..you said, I said I knew of 4 mediums w/actual soil. Maybe I said I pot using black soil, sand, Perlite and bark? The last three are soil=less..I can't recall the thread you mentioned..hmm??? Charlie..I'm so sorry about your health..You'll be in my prayers... Gotta give your son credit..he wasn't about to give up, even if it meant breaking a couple ribs. Hopefully, the docs will find the correct meds and whichever treatment works best for you. Gone 7 minutes! God in heaven. Personal question if you don't mind...did you see any lights, tunnels? You don't have to answer if uncomfortable. Yep, certain TC are very expensive..the sellers realize this and take advantage. I'm sure several people bought 'Aspen' segments so they too would be able to sell cuttings once their plant is large enough. Yes, time for reading and working w/plants..but don't overdo it..follow your docs instructions. Please, Charlie. Hirt's sells numerous in and outdoorplants..Insects, supplies, seeds. If you go back to their site, check the left side of screen, click on plants, then scrool down to House Plants and/or Succulents. Other plants they sell are annuals and perennials..garden plants. Thank you..Seek help, lol. Charlie, I normally buy small plants, too, but the 6" Sansevieria was the only size available. I first saw this Sans on Sans forum, liked then ordered..lol. If I hadn't seen one on GW, I'd never have went to Hirt's, and sought out the SAns..lol. Don't blame you..I don't fiddle with rooting leaves/stems. As long as the leaf/cutting looks healthy, it's alive. Tampering w/roots isn't advisable. When your Jade grows new leaves, and your really curious, only then should you peek at roots. I knew a girl who killed more cuttings by disturbing roots. Then she'd ask me for more cuttings..That got stale after a year or two..She and I no longer talk..lol. Ditto what MTN and Martinca said. I'm still picking tomatoes and making sandwiches and plan to keep doing so right up until almost Halloween if I can. Bah, Humbug to those who put out decorations for us to lust after before it's time! Although I've been known to sneak a peak and even buy some things myself, dang it. Now that we live in the country where nobody but my 3-4 neighbors and the neighborhood watch sees my decorations unless we have the odd party or two, I don't do much outside decorating and it's pretty simple greenery and such on the driveway columns and front door. I don't do much 'snow' either since we don't get any, but the kids loved it when they were little and so do the grands, when I hauled out the Alpine Village pieces with fake snow mats, paying homage to DH's German ancestry. I mostly blame those big box decor stores for way-too-early Christmas. You know which ones I mean. A clerk looked at me like I had 2 heads when I asked if they had any bows 3 weeks before Christmas one year. As for 'back-to-school', it started here about 2-3 weeks ago because this coming weekend is tax-free shopping weekend here in the city. I guess I ignore it since I don't have school age kids, but I have been known to take advantage of a few tax-free items. Bee, I was in Hawaii one year on business just before Christmas. There was huge Santa in a sleigh amongst a stand of palm trees in front of the Royal Hawaiian. Pulled by dolphins no less. He was dressed in a red Hawaiian shirt with a lei. Looked like he belonged there to me. Who am I to say Santa can't dress like that in Hawaii? I do sneak in a few pink flamingos, but there is a story behind me and the pink flamingos and it's a whole 'nother story.

I live in Central California Valley, and most of the shopping centers in this area, have the shelves stocked with fall merchandise, and the display windows dressed with fall and back-to-school decor by mid July. I noticed that most neighbors start to put out their fall decorations, mums, etc. the day after Labor Day. Halloween decorations are added to the fall decor during the first week of October, and sometimes even sooner. Almost everyone in the Central California Valley starts decorating for Christmas right after Thanksgiving Day. Since we don't get snow in the this area, it's really a big deal to put up elaborate holiday decorations (including fake snow)!!!

Whoa! I'm with these gals...do what makes you feel the best! Lots of times here in in Iowa, it's snowing already on Thanksgiving...sometimes it's cold enough to be ice-skating (well, some yrs. ago for me):-) ... so bring on the snowy decor! Love it! Love it! Enjoy your special family! Jeanne S.

My family will all be here Thanksgiving. Because we will all be together, and it is my mothers 90th birthday, I have begun decorating for Christmas. All the indoor lights will be on while we eat dinner. It is the only day we are all together, so I like to do it for my grandkids.

We always host Thanksgiving and every year our cousins from NJ come for a couple of days. Disclaimer: I was raised Jewish and DH was raised Catholic, so we celebrate all holidays. In deference to my cousins, who are Conservative Jews, I don't decorate the house for Christmas until after Thanksgiving (like as soon as they leave the day after Thanksgiving I'm in the attic pulling out the Christmas stuff!). I envy that you're able to decorate for the holidays before Thanksgiving because I would love to. If there's ever a year we don't host Thanksgiving I'll be up in the attic post-haste! Do what you want...I know, I know, I should take my own advice, but I love my cousins dearly and they're the last people I would want to make feel uncomfortable.

Thanks everyone! I don't have a whole lot of Christmas decor since the house was a lot smaller than it is now. But I've bought a few things, so I think next week I'll start putting them up. Not sure what dh will say about that! lol

last year I had two of my 15 trees up for Thanksgiving dinner plus some garland, ect - go for it. I agree with the others -do what you want to do and what will make your holiday more fun. It certainly sounds like your in-laws will enjoy it also especially if that is the only time you can share it with them. Have fun and TAKE PICTURES :) ......

I think you should go for it too. We host TG at our house every year, which all my out-of-town in-laws attend. One year I did all the Christmas before TG and they loved it. The only reason that I don't start early this year, is because I have a lot more TG decorations than usual and I want them and me to be able to enjoy them. I don't know how I'm going to get it all done starting after TG, with a craft show on Dec the 5th. Again it's whatever makes you happy. Personally I think TG is way to close to Christmas, and IMHO I don't understand why it can't be moved, it's not like it is a relgious holiday.

I agree, Syble. We should adopt Canada's Thanksgiving date. LOL. Much better idea for us.
