Windows Vista 'plays havoc with games'

This a headlines found at "Telegraph" in the UK. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/02/08/nvista08.xml It goes on in the article:

"They say the Vista operating system, launched to an enormous fanfare last week, is causing some games to freeze, and other to become unplayable."

"While most of the problems are expected to be fixed over the next few weeks, serious gamers are being advised to hold fire before upgrading their computers."

Here are a few of the comments found concerning the news:

"The only reason I keep Windows around is because of the computer games I play."

"Still that is no longer enough and I am currently seeking out a Linux distribution that would meet my gaming needs."

"It is time to move on."

Vista may well give Linux an opportunity to get its foot in the door of home PC's. I hardly ever use Windows 2000 any more (Linspire is my choice) except for a couple of Windows programs that I havn't found a replacement for yet. Competition is good!

Yep, the problems are huge, as many predicted, especially for gaming and Vista is basically a thinly veiled gaming OS.

Should be a word of caution to anyone contemplating upgrading to Vista. Check, check, check, to make sure that all your software, games, are Vista compatible and, if you have a laptop/notebook, make sure that drivers for your model are available for Vista before upgrading. I belong to a few computer help forums and you wojld be suprised at the number of people who do upgrades but dont check. The next thing you know, they are posting all their woes of not being able to find this driver or that and this or that wont work. Research is the key.

Okay. You guys are great. Clearly the collective wisdom is not to throw money at the problem - but figure the problem out. Owbist - in my thread on not connecting my husband's vista laptop to our network, I tried quietly, methodically to troubleshoot the issues - to no avail. I found lots of similar frustrations on google - but no solutions that worked - and I think I tried them all - at least to the best of my ability. thanks for those great, easy-to-follow instructions to transfer to an external hard drive. He'll want to do that anyway - even if he keeps this computer. This computer guy is pricey - but where I am in DC they seem to fall in the $125-140/hour range - and they can usually fix a problem. Others that charge $40-75 - that the uninformed think are good - but their know-how is less than what I find here. I tried a few of those locally recommended guys - and they accomplished the simple tasks but also made mistakes I had to hire the more expensive guy to fix. My main complaint with him is that he's wedded to his biases - he hates Vista - so his recommendation is usually to avoid or ditch it. Our struggles with Vista seem to often be how often we're blocked from things or performing simple tasks have all sort of obstacles - for "safety's" sake. Thanks to everyone for pointing out that Windows 7 is just a revamped Vista. I got my first issue of Smart Computing and they were tauting it and described some features I thought I'd love. DA - if W8 is in process, is there any indication of what it will be like? Probably worth waiting for - or at least waiting to hear more about how Windows 7 is panning out. So I'll keep plugging away on my other thread to get him connected. If I don't succeed by Tuesday, the computer guy will come and fix it. I guess we'll stop there. Thanks. Lynn.

Very funny raven, I would like to have you sitting at this computer right NOW! For the first time I am totally fed up with a computer and the problem is Vista. It is functioning ok, but just can't do the things I want to do. The only way I can view them as thumbnail is "browse with Irfanview". My laptop is widescreen and Irfan has an option to "fit to size of screen" which works. Then when I choose to set as background it asks center, tile or stretch which I haven't found when I go directly to the folder. I'm calling it a night before I through this laptop through the window. LOL

zep516 - I saw the Star wars movie - amazing to say the least. I'm not exactly a stranger to computers and have certainly spent a lot of time poking around, however I've never fooled with the themes or changing the cursor. Just never interested me before - and to tell the truth - it doesn't interest me now either. I don't like spinning cursors, new desktop background pictures are great, but I had no idea that changing the theme would do anything other than change the background. Now that I've been there, done that - won't be doing it again - easier to just put my own pictures on the desktop. Thanks for all the help, I've done system restores before and that works well - but I knew there had to be a fast little way to get my cursor back. I must look in to that program Erunt - sounds interesting and might be very, very helpful one day. I wonder how many people will go and see that little Star Wars program, now that you sent us in the right direction. Elaine

I used to play in Pogo. Bridge was my favorite because I played tournament bridge years ago. Most of the people playing were such headcases that I quit going in the rooms. Then I started playing this game based on 21. Played waaaay too much. Then they dumbed it down and I quit the Pogo site for good.
