overloaded computer

Since supposedly "fixing" my computer and doing all the necessary updates, it has been acting crazy. When I log in in the morning and open Firefox ( my chosen browser), it sounds as though the computer is going to crash , and the browser is slow to respond . It sounds like a large file is downloading.

I have removed "scotty" , thinking that having too many programs running on opening is a problem, but that has not solved it. When I open the help section from the toolbar on firefox, it does list many " false " entries under the troubleshooting section.....don't know if any of you can follow my feeble attempts at explaining . Is this causing the trouble ?

Not sure what you mean by, "sounds like it's going to crash." If the computer is making loud sounds and clicking etc then you need to check where the sounds are coming from and describe them as best as possible. Usually sounds are related to a hard drive issue.

The clicking noise is coming from the computer ; the high pitched whine that gets louder like a roar is also coming from the computer ( tower ?). The sound is the same as when I'm downloading a program or doing a scan, but much louder, and yes, I would guess it's the hard drive. Husband says that's what they told him at work when his p.c. made the same noise ( bear with me, we're seniors )This computer is about 9 years old and most likely doesn't owe me much, but I'd hate to lose anything I have on here. I do use it for minor work stuff.

First of all, a sincere thank you to each of you. The situation has been resolved. Norton contacted me this afternoon. The problem has to do with the Norton Firewall, and appears to have been fixed. If the problem recurs, I am to uninstall the Norton program and re-install it. Upon learning of my experience with i Yogi, the Norton representative explained that i Yogi has a redialer that sends your Norton call to them. i Yogi is a TOTAL SCAM. For those experiencing similar problenms in future, the Norton representative assures me that this toll-free number will get you to the real Norton Support people. 1(800)745-6061 When we go through the internet to get to Norton, even if we are entering through the Norton site, i Yogi can intercept the call. Again, my sincerest thanks for your time and attention to my problem. :O)

TS, Your eye for detail is amazing. You are correct, I got the spice bottles in Italy for .50 each. They were filled with a spice that I didn't recognize but no matter, I poured out the spice as not to have any issues with customs, I was only interested in the bottles. Yes, the P-Touch is my friend. Sheri, Don't beat yourself up. If I still had kids at home, there wouldn't be the level of organization that I now enjoy. The underlined wordscolor> are advertising. I use this pancake batter from Cooks.Com as cake batter, which I bake at 375 F. I double the quantity. It makes a wonderful cake that's hardly sweet at all, which is what I really like and is so difficult to come by. I just leave the buttermilk-oat mixture on the kitchen counter. I take the eggs out of the fridge the night before when I mix the batter, so everything is room temp. I also sub the butter with veg. oil and it comes out just as good. This recipe uses more oats than flour at the rate of 4:1, and is threfore ideal for using up an oatmeal overload. OLD - FASHIONED OVERNIGHT RAISIN OATMEAL PANCAKES 2 c. old fashioned oats 2 lg. eggs 1/3 dark seedless raisins 2 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 2 c. buttermilk 1/4 c. butter, melted & cooled 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. cinnamon Mix oats and buttermilk in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate overnight. When ready to cook, beat in eggs and butter. Stir in raisins. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Add to oat mixture and stir briskly, just until moistened.

If you don't want to lose anything probably time to start moving it to another drive. Sounds like that one is going bad!

I agree. Back up everything you want to save, either to an exterior hard drive or to DVDs or CDs or even flash drives.

Backup IMMEDIATELY. The clicking noise brings back a negative experience with an old system just before the hard drive failure.

My only other thought is since the system has recently been serviced perhaps the ribbon wire is contacting the cooling fan. I don't lean to that though.

It sure seems like a hard drive about to die. How old is the hard drive? You need to check the make and model on the maker's site and determine the length of the warranty. Many hard drives have a 3 year warranty so you may be in luck there. The date of manufactured will be listed on the drive.

My computer is 9 yrs old; everything is original, but I seem to have had more problems than usual since seeking "support.com" for a particular problem with AVG. Now it is really making a lot of noise.
I will start backing up to disk for photos. How do I back up important saved emails ? I have many work related that I need to save ?
Once again, thank you for all the help.

Saving emails has always seemed an issue. A simple solution might to be to create an (or use an existing) online email account and send all you wanted emails there.
