Help with decision on external blower for Viking hood

We are remodeling our kitchen but keeping our 10 year old Viking 36" gas range top and Viking hood. The hood currently has a 600 CFM internal blower that can be pretty noisy if we run it at anything above medium speed. I'm wondering how much quieter this set up would be if we replaced the internal blower with a 900 cm external blower? I've been told we would need to upgrade to 10" piping. The pipe goes up from the hood to the ceiling joists (9 foot ceilings) and then makes a 90 degree turn and goes straight to the side of the house, about 8 feet in total. The new Viking external blower is about $800. I don't have an itemized cost from the contractor for the installation, but its clearly not an inexpensive change but we'd be willing to do this if we could be assured that the noise level would be lower.

Any feedback?

John
