bottle brush trees?

I really love the little bottle brush trees. Does anyone know where they sell them?

Barb - you can get reproduction ones at many shops - they are in shops now. Department 56 and several other companies make great ones. There are trees of purple, pink, blue -both vintage and new. The old ones are available on eBay - they can be reasonable or pricey, depending on the color of the tree and the amount of decorations.

This is one from the 1950's with its original snow and glass balls,

The tinsel tree on the right with the colored glass bulbs is one of my favorites - it is quite old....if you look at this picture, you will see old bottle brush with new ones - on the far right is a little spiral shaped one that looks kind of brown with snow - it is from an old model railroad set - about 60 years old.

Here are new and old trees mixed together with a little antique German doll from the 1920's

Barb - you can find the bottle brush trees at Walmart for a low price of 99 cents for the small one. You can also find them at Michael's or Joann's Craft Stores but you're going to pay a higher price. Check out where they have the Christmas Village setups. You can always "add" a little more snow if you want them with more than what they come with. Just pickup a bottle of "Snowtex" at either of the craft stores and either use a small brush or Q-tip to put it on the bristles. For even more sparkle, you can sprinkle some "Diamond Dust" onto the Snowtex while it is still wet. Find that at Michael's but must tell you it's sort of pricey at $8.99 for a jar. See if you can find one of their 50% off coupons. It will last a long time though. May I suggest also - when you sprinkle it on, only use a pinch of it or so in between your fingers and sprinkle it gently (don't just drop it on as it will be alot and clump - unless that's what you want). You can also use a spray on adhesive on the tree and then sprinkle on the Diamond Dust but I have found the spray adhesives are "tacky" - even after (supposedly) drying. I've use that on projects and had to use a sealer over the spray adhesive to stop the tackiness. Want some of the tiny glass balls on the tree - use a hot glue gun. The small hot glue gun at Walmart is relatively cheap and so are the glue sticks.

Have fun finding the trees and more fun spritzing them up. Would love to see what you do with them.

If it's a Callistemon, they're as tough as old boots. The traditional time to prune is after the flowers die, and just cut off behind the spent flowers as the seed pods form. Otherwise, it'll start looking like this, with fewer and fewer flowers over the years... And it's a common practice to cut the whole tree/bush back to near ground level, where it'll come back bushier and healthier than ever. They do like moisture, and I've commonly seen them growing on the banks of rivers and dams, where some of the roots are constantly wet. They're not bothered by frosts or summer heat. They grow here happily through -5C (23F) winters and 40C (104F) summers.

mulching around Bottle Brush & Aloe

I finally decided that I would like to use some aloes as companions for my Bottle Brush trees. I planted the trees this spring and mulched with shredded bark. Now I want to add Aloes, I am thinking that I should not keep the shreddd bark mulch and use rock? The area gets afternoon sun. I am also thinking I could plant a living ground cover (Rocky Clay soil). Actually now that I think about it...will the Aloes like the rocky clay soil? I cannot amment the entire area as the Bottle Brush are already happy and established.

I had a seedling pop up at the edge of my pond amongst the coral rocks. I figured I'd leave it there as it looked interesting. When in one year, it grew to 5' and lush. I took it out because I didn't want the roots to invade the lining of the pond. Well I found that the root ball was HUGE. It apparently was quite happy being a 'water plant', maybe too happy. I had to dig this gigantic hole to plant it because most of it was roots. It is now doing well and I can't wait for it to grow larger because I like to attach orchids to it. Of course now that it is in the ground it is growing much slower. Go figure... I think your new plant will be fine.

I got some really cute silver and gold small bottlebrush trees at Dollar General. They also had the big words "Joy", "peace" etc., to match. The trees were a dollar and the words were 2$ each!

I love them...
I think they are so .... welll just so much a part of the past that I always haaaaaaaaave to have several around... I remember... my little brother had them all over his little train track village.... OH THAT WAS FUN!!!!!
I have a smalll collection of them... and I also have a small collection of WOOD, Glass, tinsel and ceramic TREES!!!
