I don't think I've ever seen one, except for my cousin's mid cent mod, where the stone fireplace is at the center, with kitchen, dining and living room arrayed around it. Since it doesn't actually touch the brick, it seems natural enough. I'm not sure how the projection of the chimney through the roof is treated...

I guess in a more tradtional home, the stacked stone look would seem natural enough from the inside, where you wouldn't be looking at the brick, but from the outside it might seem a bit off. A lot would depend on the color relationship between the brick and stone, and whether the overall design called attnetion to the stone, or helped it blend in.

This would be a good job for a photoshop adept.

I've seen plenty of brick houses around Chicagoland that have stone chimneys. They usually also have some stone elsewhere on the exterior -- maybe over the entry door or windows, or trim on a front stoop. It's common in homes from the 1930's. Is this what you are asking -- about chimneys? You said 'fireplace'.

I'm thinking stacked grey stone with a traditional tumbled redish orange brick, like you see in Savannah or Charleston. Would that clash?

When I have seen it looking best is when the stone is more angular/dressed stone rather than rounded stone.

Here is our outdoor stone fireplace at the end of our screen porch. The second picture is the main fireplace that comes from the great room. Both are woodburning inserts with gas starters. The stone is real veneer stone; that avoids the weight issues associated with thicker stones. The brick is 'mortar washed' with a colored mortar.

Anyone have pics of a southern style brick home with a stone chimney?

You would be fine with a brick home and a stone chimney and fireplace. We did the dry stack on the screen porch fireplace first, but the mason got off centered and the rocks leaned to the right. We decided to let him grind the joints and level the stone; thereby, having a slightly different look; one that you won't normally see if I had not posted 2 pics side by side. The square and rectangular cut stone is called Ashlar pattern.
