I spend so much of my time trying to insert a picture into a word doc. I make a drawing in adobe illustrator and save it to a file, then open word, click on insert picture from file. When I click on the file and it's empty. But If I go through "my docs" it comes up with the contents just fine. Why is it empty when I try to access it through word?

Word probably doesn't recognise Adobe's picture format. Can you export your picture from Adobe to a different format? Or maybe just copy and paste it into Word? I am not familar with Adobe but that sounds like what is happening.

Illustrator is a graphics design & layout program. What it generates are page files in its own format and with its own file format extension, ai.

Word is a wordprocessing program that generates page files in its own format and with the file format extension of doc.

The drawing you think you're saving is actually a page file with the drawing on it. What you're trying to do is open an Illustrator page in Word.

If you want specifically the drawing as a graphic image, I think Illustrator can convert it for you, but you have to save it as a universal type of graphic format and not a page. You need it to be a jpg image, a bmp, tif, eps, png, and there are many others that are compatible with Word. Just go back to Insert Picture, click the down arrow at the "Files of Type" prompt, and you will see all of the graphic formats that are compatible with Word.

If Illustrator cannot do it or if you don't know how, you can export or copy and paste the image into Photoshop, which is a image editing program that serves this very purpose. In Photoshop, just go to Save As and click the down arrow at the "Format" prompt. Select the format type you want to convert to. Either a bmp or jpg will suffice.

Sorry if I jumped the gun in assuming you have Photoshop. Most people who have Illustrator also have Photoshop. If you have Photoshop Elements or any other graphics editor such as Paint Shop Pro, Photo Paint, PhotoImpact, etc., they will serve your purpose also. Incidentally, it is likely you have Microsoft Picture Editor just in case you never did install a graphics editing program.

Thanks! :~) It's not that I think the smell is bad, it just has an artificial quality to it. I smells more like citrus extract, rather than zest or juice. More lime-like to my nose. Nope! These have been kept inside. I actually have two of 'em. This one, here, is a selfing and the other is an original division of the awarded plant. It's not mature enough to bloom and, although the roots are very healthy, I killed it's one new growth. :~( I'd like to compare blooms, someday, and see if there any difference in quality. I really was very suprised at the bloom. The idea of a cultural shock was mentioned to me as a trigger. I thought that most of my culture was pretty shocking!;~) The area is being remodeled and the lighting has been erratic, as have temps. I did find several other orchids in spike, so I could've triggered the lot of 'em or they're now going to all die!;~) I'm going on faint memory, Sharon! ;~) We've alway had far more important things to do than dust, anyway. All you really need, is a good hose and a leaf blower! ;~) Besides, I don't like having potentially dangerous chemicals in the air. Scott

I would leave them alone until there is no more possible threats of frost, so like in April maybe. Reason is that even thought that dying foliage is ugly, it will protect the rest of the plant and root from more damage in future frosts. It's only early January and we could have several more frosts until spring. If you cut it now, what's left could be damaged again, even maybe down to the roots. So I'd just leave it for now, and cut it back in April. But do water it if we don't get any rain for 2-3 weeks. A well watered plant handles frosts better than a dry one.

I have not scheduled surgery yet and am ignoring the suggestion of having them both done at once. When I was a newly graduated RN I worked ortho for a year ( some disasters but hips have come along way) and my mom had a horrible hip replacement outcome, so I am putting it off for as long as I can. Don't wait so long you are too out of shape ... it's best done while you are still reasonably spry with muscle strength left for rehab instead of totally crippled and weak. And before you have wrecked the surrounding support muscles and tendons compensating for the pain and lack of mobility. (SO has a prosthetic knee, his brother has 2 of them, and another brother has a hip replacement he loves). Yes, it's come a LONG ways, even using 3-d imaging and custom manufacture of the prosthetics if needed. They can build a copy of the joint, figure out exactly how things need to be altered and dry-fit the prosthesis without ever lifting a scalpel.

@ShadyWillowFarm When I say goop I mean the ornate / decorative stuff. Over window, rounded corners on cabinets, all of the "extra" stuff over the vent, etc. The footprint of the kitchen isn't changing at all--and all appliances stay at least for now....they are standard size thankfully. There is a massive pantry behind the door on the left. Perimeter cabinets will be a warm white. Island will be something like SW- Balanced Beige and I have a similar colored tile from Walker Zanger that will be backplash. Counters TBD but possibly a Dolomite or Quartzite (We have bianco macubus in our current kitchen and love it).

If I may offer 2 points to bestlawn's excellent post you should convert to bmp (bitmap), this is because bmp is a better quality file than jpg and also is a Microsoft product. If you have no photo editing program at all you can download the free Irfanview for that. Nice little free program actually.
