Dishwasher reliability: Would you buy your DW again?
Comments (49)I know I'm a latecomer to this thread, but it's a good topic. The house I bought 6 years ago came with a Miele Novotronic DW. At first I was put off by the cutlery rack at the top, and still don't like having to "arrange" all the flatware, but the unit has been very good at washing, and it's pretty quiet. It has a fan that evacuates the steamy air through the door at the end of the cycle, so dishes are fairly dry. I don't think any new model offers this. But the experience I have had with Miele technical service on the phone deserves a special mention. They are quick to pick up, knowledgeable, patient and very polite. They will walk you through your problem and offer the appropriate solutions, most of which you can carry out yourself. Once you've made your first call, you're in their system. Best customer service I've ever encountered! Further, Miele excels in easy-to-fix design. Most owner-serviceable items (and there are several) can be easily removed and replaced - many without any tools. Some require a Philips screwdriver or a pair of pliers. I'm about to remodel my kitchen but the old dishwasher is going to stay. If it ain't broke, don't ditch it!...See MoreShow me your rack (KitchenAid DW model KUDE70 or 60)
Comments (9)I'VE DONE THAT WITH MINE! I removed the silverware basket from day one. There's still a small corner caddy if need it. I put larger items in it. Removing the silverware basket opens up enough space for a larger frying pan or 9x13 pan (with room left over). I can't believe how much space this dw has. I found yet another tine (on the middle rack) that drops down for more customization. Putting your silverware on the top rack is a little slow at first as you learn what can go where but it doesn't take long to figure it out. The other day I placed a large splatter screen (it doesn't fit well in the bottom because I've dropped the middle rack due to my extra tall drinking glasses) on top of my silverware. I've had the smaller measuring cups up there too, so don't think of it as JUST for silverware and cutlery. I have the KUDE60 model. I needed black. The KUDE70 is ss and paneled AND 5 dB quieter! I think everything else is the same. If I could change one thing, it would be that the plate spacings on the bottom rack were a tiny bit closer together. I know a lot of people use larger stoneware plates but I use the thin Corelle plates. I could get more in there if the spacing as a bit tighter. Other than that, I'm extremely pleased with it :) Oh, also you can remove one or both of the cutlery racks. It's split in two. If you needed something really tall in the middle you can take out one of the racks and use the corner caddy for more silverware space if needed....See Moretol kitchenaid dw vs miele classic
Comments (4)Before you buy any dishwasher you need to take your dishes to the showroom and try them in different models. They have different racking setups, and often people find that the narrowly spaced tines on Miele and other European models just won't work for them. If KA's tine layout is going to work the best, then you should get that. Other than that, the KA model you are considering is much more feature rich than the Miele you're considering, but the Miele is better quality. I have that Miele, it's an excellent dishwasher. However, your choice of models to compare seems odd. You're not comparing apples to apples, that Miele is bottom of the line and sells for around $1000 and I believe the TOL KA is more like $1600. If you would be willing to pay that much for a KA, why not pay that much for an upper middle of the line Miele model that will have both the quality and the features? And if the BOL Miele has all the features you want, no need to pay a premium for a lesser quality product unless the Miele racking doesn't work with your dishware. Noise... I wouldn't worry much about it. Any high end dishwasher is going to be very quiet and anyone who is used to an older model will be pleased with the noise levels. The Miele Classic is more than quiet enough. You'll want to compare KA and Miele's execution of the top racks. I have heard that KA and Bosch 3rd racks are inferior to Miele (who originated the idea). I can't confirm/deny that since i didn't look at KA/Bosch 3rd rack models, but you'll want to look into it....See MoreKitchenAid Architect II DW - rust on SS interior door liner after 6 mo
Comments (0)Not quite 6 mos old, and only used for ~ 4 mos (4 light loads/week). Yesterday, while unloading dishes, I found four rust spots on the SS liner panel inside the door...yes, the part that gets wet. Limited lifetime warranty for this part, so I called KA/Whirlpool only to be told rust is considered cosmetic and NOT warrantied! Corrosion is cosmetic? Wow. They offered to point me to a product that would remove the rust...again, not the point/problem. I've read all over the internet about people posting rust issues on the outside of SS appliances, but not on a part that sees water with each load. Beyond frustrating....See Moremonicakm_gw
