Help- Kitchen Aid CD Fridge Terrible!

I purchased the KA Architect II series "counter depth" fridge "panel ready" and it looks terrible. It sticks out almost 5 inches from the counter and looks very out of place.

My KD did not double check the specs close enough and did not notice the depth is closer to 30" (without the panels).

Sooo....hoping I can return the fridge (praying)- any suggestions for another fridge?

Viking is not in the budget...have 4 small kids so i prefer panel as it is easier to keep clean than SS.

Can you scoop out the wall behind the fridge, using a header, and push it back? (All at your KD's expense of course!)

thanks for the reply. already thought of that- but there is a wall behind it with a built-in bench. I would have to rebuild the entire bench- not going to happen!

Any other thoughts?

I'm in the same boat, except with the JA version of the same fridge (I like the JA handles better). Even shaving off a couple of inches would be a plus for me. Plus I truly wanted the integrated (paneled) look. But I've been to three showrooms to see the Liebherr, and the doors have been really awful in the closing/opening... they rub together and pull on each other. Some have taken a shove to close. Not what I want to pay 6K for plus the panels/handles. I've emailed the American company that does customer service for Liebherr... last Thursday... for where I could see a new one with "fixed" doors. Haven't heard back yet. It seems like people are happy with this fridge once they have their doors fixed. But I wouldn't want to spring for it unless I see one that is a pleasure to use. We really love that it makes real ice cubes, not crescent ice! A family pet peeve worth some $$ to eliminate.

I've been going through a similar process but with models without the second external drawer and or through-the-door water and ice. The Kitchenaid is a Whirlppol product and, as far as I can tell, is assembled with Whirlpool's other FD fridges at the factory in Amana, Iowa. Even though i apparently shares compoents with the other Whirlpool products, KA offers a ten year warranty on the sealed systems but the other Whirlpool fridges only give you a 1 year warrranty. KA's warranty is 1 year everything, parts and labor on the sealed systems through year five and parts only for years six through 10. Equally interesting, most Samsungs only give you a one year warranty like Whirlppols but the particular "four door" model has 5 year warranty on the sealed system. All of that being said, the warranty is only as good as the service companies you can call when you need help. Some places, you have choices. Others, you do not. Some service companies are good and some are terrible. The warranty isn't worth much if you have to wait three weeks to even get somebody to come out and look at your dead fridge. Do, do check on the warranty coverage and find out if you have choices. Samsung seems to have had particular difficulties in that area but Whirlpool brands often use the same low-bid service companies and can be equally bad. Getting some "hands-on" time is also excellent advice for making a choice. Look what what you like to keep in the fridge and how you can arrange the shelving to hold it. That fourth drawer may be very useful to some folks and a royal pain to others. Until you lay hands n it and see how the unit works for you, it can be really hard to tell if it will work for you or not. For instance, are you somebody who needs to store gallon jars of pickles? Maybe you will want to stash a 3 gallon pickle crock? Will you be brining 20 lb. turkeys? If so, can you arrange the shelving so that you can store these things conveniently? Do you need to supply milk to whole platoons of kids? If so, where are you going to put the containers? Maybe you have a world-class collection of mustards? Do you need slide-out shelves to access that half-acre collection of small condiment jars? How do the tempeature and humidty controls work for you? Sliders are fine for some folks and anathema to others.

Not sure what GE has done with their website, but when I just checked it listed only the slide in and the older freestanding PHB925 (with a list price boosted to $3k) and has no mention of the newly released PHB915. Apparently, they have released the new stove to vendors like AJ Madison but, like Kithcenaid, have not updated their own website. The original model, the PHB925, is now being priced by AJ Madison at $2600 (used to be $2250 a couple of months ago) and Lowe's is now asking $2800 for it (up from $2550 a couple of months ago). The new model, the PHB915, has a similar layout and mostly similar specs (except that AJ Madison is listing the standard KwH ratings for the "925" burners and the "boost" ratings for the "915" burners.) The 915 seems to have a bit more black on the chassis and bit less brushed metal (but still has the neo-Jetson "cat-eye" styling on the oven). There does not seem to be a "proofing" function for the oven but GE added an additional "steam-clean" function so that there are two modes for oven self-cleaning. Somebody here reported that the new model is slightly shallower in depth than the old one. AS Madison has it listed for under $2k. AJ Madison has a link to the manual for the new stove.

Other than building a recess you need to buy a shallower fridge.

"Counter-Depth" runs 26.75"-30". You bought one of the deepest CD fridges.

GE Profile PFIC1NFZ is a french door CD panel ready fridge that is 26.75" deep.

GE Profile PSIC3RGXBV is a SxS CD panel ready fridge with ice/water in the door and is 27.125" deep.

I have seen both of these at my local Sears Outlet for good discounts.

If you want your fridge to sit flush with your cabinets you have to buy a fully integrated built-in. That is big bucks

BTW Even if Viking were in the budget you would want to skip it for Sub-Zero,Liebherr,or something else.

Cabinet depth is a misnomer - the doors always extend beyond the cabinets - only integrated units like Sub-zero will be flush with your counters.

Cabinet-depth and Built-In are two different things.

My KA Pro-Line CD free standing fridge's body (i.e. without the doors) is 24" deep, but requires a good 1 1/2" or so behind it for the water lines on the back of the fridge.

My cabinet maker made the gables on either side of the fridge deeper, to allow for a proper installation and it also gives a nice flush place for the counter top to end.

A picture would help. Do you have gables on either side of the fridge? They should be deeper, along with the cabinet above the fridge if you have one.

Of course a different more shallow fridge would also solve the problem. I'm not a fan of paneled fridges unless they're truly invisible built-ins, so I don't know the options out there, but I love our KA Pro Line.

Perhaps your KD who mismeasured can order you some new side panels for the fridge (and have the cabinet above it pulled out some). Your KD ought to be very accommodating since this is his fault.

So, is there a cabinetry solution?

There are refrigerators that run 24" - 25" including the door. Liebherr is one.

With a counter depth fridge, the carcass is generally counter depth (24") but not the doors. Tim's solution is pretty good, though you still have to take into account door swing so as not to grind against those side panels.

If you have a tight space,covering the side of the fridge with the wood panels will still stick fridge out into the walkway or galley.

If you have a large open kitchen you can even make the counters deeper. Say 27" deep. Makes the fridge look built-in and you get more storage space/counter space.
