medicine cabinet - no mirror - ideas

We are remodeling our tiny master bath. We can't put a recessed medicine cabinet in front of the vanity because of all the plumbing for the adjacent hall bath. I didn't want to place a non-recessed one there because I am trying to keep all the lines as clean as possible in the small space. So, I opted to put in to the side of the vanity, but I am not sure what to do about the door. I don't think I want a mirror there, but I'm not sure what to do instead. I saw one idea online where they used a picture frame. Please help me with your ideas. What I really want is for it to be unnoticed. Has anyone successfully hidden a medicine cabinet?

I have a similiar problem. My current penciled in solution is to panel the door so that it will match the paneling elsewhere in the bathroom. Plan B would be to go with a mirror matching the "main" mirror in height. Plan C is to put in open shelves. Plan D is to forget it and rely on the vanity. Each of these plans has its problems. If you do come up with the perfect solution, do let me know.

I will. Glad to know I am not the only one! My GC has loads of experience, I'm kind of hoping he will have a creative solution. I would also be interested in what you end up doing.

If you aren't moving, I'd ignore trends and get what looks good and works for you (since it'll be untrendy before it matters). In other words, I don't now what is trendy right now, so keep that in mind. This is just what I think would work and look good. :) I like what you have, with the mirror going almost all the way across. Leave enough space on the sides for hanging towels (retractable makeup mirror maybe?) so that they don't block the mirror. Possibly a wider light fixture than what you have pictured but at a similar height. I'd do a mirror with a small frame or beveled edge. (I think unframed mirrors are absolutely unpopular now, but your mirror is already sort of framed by the space and less might be better. A bulky googah frame could be overkill.) A medicine cabinet isn't necessary and won't be missed unless you like using the angles to see the back of your hair, but there are better ways of doing that. And a medicine cabinet over the sink would require multiple doors and a seamless look would be better.

There are a lot of on line sources for medicine cabinets, but of course then you'd be buying them based on a picture, not seeing them in person. I bought two Afina Basix medicine cabinets with an antique silver finished frame for my master bath remodel from qualitybath.com and am very happy with them. Since it would be hard to exactly match the wood color, have you considered getting a cabinet with a metal frame that complements your fixtures? That's how I selected my cabinets. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about getting an exact size. Since you'll be getting a separate light, you can move the light box as needed, even putting in one on each side of the med cab if you want, really easily, and then patch the drywall before painting.

rufinorox - Nice looking beveled glass cabinet. You should be very pleased with the overall update. We are in the beginnings of a facelift to our master and planning for a similar look by using a beveled mirror across a double vanity. The towel holder is simply a robe hook from the same collection as the towel bars. We found ours at Pottery Barn but most collections have something similar. Some even have really large ones termed "harness hooks" to use in lieu of towel bars.

As to options for color -- would likely stay with white. Is this a box slipped into the wall and the frame a part of that box? Have you considered recreating your medicine cabinet storage space in a cabinet above the toilet and just adding a large frame-less mirror behind / over you sink?

I've posted about this company before on another thread here (http://www.thathomesite.com/forums/load/bath/msg082128045493.html?7), but there's a co. that makes a recessed medicine cabinet with a picture frame door. It's called The Concealed Cabinet and you can buy them in a bunch of colors and styles. I'll post the link below. I would recommend checking out their testimonials page; there are tons of AMAZING photos of these in people's homes.

Thanks - I did look at concealed cabinet, but it wasn't quite what I wanted. What I ended up deciding was to try a fully flush cabinet GC is building, which will be painted the same as the wall. I'm not completely sure I will like it but we will see shortly. If I don't like it - I will probably try the picture idea. My bath should be close to completion by the end of this week. One down, another bath, kitchen and family room to go!

ROFL...Jessica, from the blog, loved the idea of a cabinet above the sofa with the remotes and a bag of Cheetos (one of the essential foodgroups!).
