I amagine there are some products that would harm granite, but nail polish remover is not one of them. The stuff my fabricator used to clean up after attaching the granite backsplash to the granite vanity was acetone, that is what most nail polish removers are. You will probably seal your granite and it doesn't take any fancy cleaning compound to keep it clean. OxyClean and water are the staples in my household, with a microfiber cloth. I think Corian is more likely to stain than granite. Think about it, granite is a natural stone, in nature it takes alot of abuse. Last time I checked there wasn't that much difference in price between the 2 materials. For easy of upkeep and looks I prefer granite, but each to his own.

Funny that you guys started to discuss this just when I am about to start this same project myself. Here are my findings. First off, if you plan of putting a counter on top of the new 3.8 cu ft FL, good luck, and have your pocket book ready. You see, the deepest "standard" counters are those for kitchens, at 25 1/8". Assuming that one leaves around 5" of clearance behind those newer FL machines for vents, air circulation, heat, etc, then you are looking at about 30"-35" of depth, depending on how flush you want the counter to come to the front of the machine. Having said that, there are 3 prices for laminate counters in the stores (like Home Depot). The counters you see in the store in stock are the cheapest, and will cost around $10 li ft. If you need to pick a finish that matches say the sink counter top in your bathroom where the machines are also located, then that is considered a custom order, even if it is a standard depth. This will easily double the price to $20 li ft. Now if you want to order a non-standard depth so that it goes from the back of the wall to the front of your new FL, then you are looking at $35-$50 li ft, depending on type of finish like rounded vs sqaure front edge, back ledge or no ledge, etc... Keep this in mind when shopping for a counter top. I would like my counter to cover the machines completely, so I might have to bite the bullet and order the more expensive counter top.... Again, I am talking about a laminate counter top, no fancy materials here.... I am from Canada, and here is what the local Home Depot quoted me in Canadian dollars for the 3 options.. 1) In-Store counter (limited finishes) 25 1/8" (standard depth) X 6 feet = $68 CAD Custom order counter (you choose the finish) 25 1/8" (standard depth) X 6 feet = $132 - $150 CAD 30 Csutom order counter (you choose the finish) 30-35" (non standard depth) X 6 feet = $222 CAD I believe the last option of non-standard depth only allows for a square front edge finish. If you want a rounder edge in front, like that found on your kitchen counter, the price jumps to $500 CAD, since the guy said that they have to charge for a full 4X8 sheet, and then cut the custom size from there, in order to get the rounded front edge... One other option you can do, which my brother did very nicely is lay down 2 sheets of plywood (for extra thickness), and tile the top and sides, looks really nice, but is a lot more work...

I know granite is the "in thing" right now but I love corian. I love how warm and tactile it feels under your hand. I never cared for how hard and shiny granite is. IMO it's personal choice, every counter will have it's own set of pros and cons and what it boils down to is iwhat you like. Someone who just doesn't like a material will have all kinds reasons for why it stinks but it's just personal preference. I find it hard to believe that off white corian stained, I had off white corian in the kitchen of my first house and I came home from europe to find 6 week old marinara sauce sitting on it and it came out with a little soft scrub and a green scrubbie.

I just found this thread and wanted to share how happy I am with my new Witch Hazel Corian. I agonized over this decision but am so glad I chose Corian because it is warm, forgiving, and the Witch Hazel gives me the cottage-style look I wanted without the marble price. I installed Corian in my old house and we enjoyed it for 18 years until I moved. It was a basic white back then but it looked as good the day I moved as the day it was installed. I love it because stains buff right out, it's easy to repair, and gives a soft, warm feel to your kitchen or bath. I would highly recommend the new Witch Hazel color if you're looking for something that replicates the look of marble but doesn't stain like marble does. Witch Hazel is a directional pattern so seams will show. I was particularly concerned about my island because it's 36" wide and Corian comes in 30" sheets. The fabricators did a marvelous job with the seam. The 45-angle seam is more noticeable but it is the nature of the product and I'm fine with it. After it was installed, I noticed there were some fine lines on it. I called the fabricator and they sent the Corian "expert" over and he gave me a lesson on how to care for Corain. He actually told me he prefers this to granite (sorry all you granite-lovers!) because it is so easy to repair, unlike granite. He said he is constantly having to try and repair granite because people think they can put hot pots on it. You shouldn't, he said. It can leave dull rings. That is true of Corian too, but with Corian, he can buff out the ring. He said his top choice in countertops would be Quartz. I just didn't care for the look of Quartz, since I wanted it to be blend in with my vintage style. He showed me how to take a gray Scotchbrite pad and gently buff out any scratches and soap build up. The light marks on my Corian were from transportation straps and they buffed out beautifully. I would highly recommend this product. I couldn't be happier.
