....let them scan your recovery drive D too? I now only have them scan my C drive, but if I should add the D drive, I will. Your advice? Thanks.

I would say no because nothing is being written to that section.

I too would say no - unless a scan found various Trojans and the like then I would scan the recovery drive. If you had problems on the C: drive did not scan the recovery drive how could you feel comfortable using it to do a recovery somewhere down the road?

On the other hand anyone who has a recovery partition should burn that to CDs in case the hard drive fails. Hard drive failure without backup CDs would be catastrophic.

You're welcome. It was a question I never thought about before because I only use anti-malware programs that I know for sure have a good reputation so I didn't think twice about letting them loose on my machine. But the issue you were concerned about -- and worse -- could happen if one downloaded a fake anti-malware program, like those that throw up a warning screen claiming to have found all kinds of infections on your machine when you visit a compromised web site. Since they often seem legitimate, or even claim to be part of Windows, people get fooled. As long as you stick with the legitimate ones and download them from reliable web sites, you'll be fine...they're trustworthy. One added precaution: whenever I initially download even a trusted piece of software I always save it and run a scan on it before I run it.

Spwareblaster would be fine to install and a good idea. Along with a program called Web of trust (Wot) These programs actually can prevent Malware from installing in the first place. Only run 1 Anti Virus Program. Only use 1 Firewall. And only 1 Active Spyware program, like Windows Denfender, in your case Kaspersky probably covers you as it would more then likely have spyware protection and a firewall included. Spywareblaster does not scan in the background so it will never interfere with any other active spyware programs running. You will need to up-date it manually, I check mine once a week. Malwarebytes free will also never interfere with other active scanners, it's called an on-Demand scanner and does not run in the background and does not prevent malware, it is generally used after the fact to remove malware. Malwarebytes is the first tool of choice to use when you think you may have an infection or just addware like myweb search, or the ask toolbar.

When I use the computer while Avast scans, I get a notice 'certain files items could not be scanned.' I always assumed it was because I was using something while the scan ran. Avast starts to scan at 4pm, which is a terrible time for me, as I'm usually doing something when the scan starts. I can't figure out how to change the time. I remember when the afro was popular and I asked my Mom if I could have one and she said no. I was in the 7th grade and thought how mean. Well when I was a freshman(14) in high school, I asked again and she told me that I could do it IF I was responsible about it and kept it neat and always looked presentable. I remember it as one of my first big decisions and I was so proud of the fact that she had enough faith in me that I would do the right thing and I did. Fast forward a gazillion years later and my D son asked if he could grow his hair out so that he could wear it braided. At the time he was 14 and I remembered the encounters with my Mom and I said the same thing to him. My hubby immediately said no and we had a family meeting and we made it clear that if he didn't take care of his hair AND save up the money to pay for getting it braided himself, then it would be cut off. Well my son is now almost 22 with hair below his shoulders and he is very responsible about taking care of his hair. Actually he is almost obsessed about it :-) That was one of the first real mature decisions for him, just like it was for me. I think depending on the maturity level of the kid, 14 is not too young to start experimenting with hair. As long as it is made clear to the kid what the potential ramifications are, then I think it is fine. I think we as adults have to remember what it is like to be that age and struggle with individuality vs what's popular and how hard it can be for teenagers. It is just hair and it will grow back. I have had every imaginable hairstyle under the sun,afro, long, short, asymmetrical, mullet and braids. Each style represented me during a particular period and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do different things. We have to support, be honest but let them discover who they are. Oh yeah one other thing, as soon as my son started growing facial hair, he loved it and I hated it. He would let it grow long and I would beg for him to please shave and my hubby gently reminded ME about letting him express his individuality :-) To me he looked like Grizzly Adams but to my son it made him look older. Ughh.... So the running joke between us was that I would call him Grizzly but if he wanted to look like a mountaim man, that was his choice. Again fast forward a few years and he has a very nice goatee that is now well manicured and he looks great. I remembered my own experience and let him be and he eventually grew out of the Grizzly Adams look. Thank goodness!

I actually do let them scan my D drive also just for the safety factor, I have also made the CD's and have Acronis True Image, I guess I am just one of those suspender and belt kinda people LOL
since it is just my recovery partition it scans pretty quickly.
But the main thing is to do full scans on the C drive after updating the programs of course.

May I add a question to debi's ?

Should one run these programs in safe mode or regular ? I was once told (back when I had a computer with Windows 98 on it) to run the defragmenter in safe mode because it was constantly restarting; I was getting the message "contents of drive have changed." I've been doing that way ever since, but I don't know if I really need to or if any of the AV or anti-spyware/adware programs should be run that way.

unless you are having a problem running them or there is a conflict you can run them in regular mode, the reason sometimes you are told to do it in safe mode is so that nothing else is running and it has much better and easier access to all files, nothing is being used so less likely to have conflicts or encounter used files etc.
However if you prefer doing them in safe mode that is perfectly fine.

I set mine to scan the the external drive since I have an active back up every time I save something. It doesn't have that much time added to it since there is a small amount of space taken up on the 160 GB external drive.

I believe if you run in safe mode the your restore points can be scanned where in normal startup Windows prevents this to protect the restore point.

Scott back in the W98 days there always seemed to be something running in the background that interfered with the defrag. It would attempt to defrag 10 times as I recall then quit with a warning. That has been overcome now.

Owbist hit the nail right on the head. The screen saver, scheduled tasks, and the early AVs were the most common issues with defrag.

Still today I work on Win98 systems with high-speed access that have to be started in Safe Mode to use the System File Checker, Scandisk and Defrag.
