No offense taken. I never recommend realtime applications other than a single AV. Without this limitation a user could inundate there system with applications running in the background which would demand resources and possibly conflict with one another. For all the postive service they could provide the potential negativity is there too. A user has to accept some responsibility for awareness, and protection such as frequent scheduled scans. Actually, you're probably better off that they didn't install the new drive. I think that when they do, they just pull the old drive and replace it with a blank one. This way, at least you've got the opportunity to transfer stuff. If I were you, I'd get an external drive enclosure so that you can transfer things from the old drive to the new one. If you have to return the old one to Dell, get something that will completely erase the old drive. Just deleting the files or reformatting leaves it in a state where data can be restored. I've bought refurbished drives before that had sensitive data on them. If you don't have to return it, either buy spinrite to recover the drive as much as possible or drill some holes through it and throw it out.

Techno-dummy here with a question: If one has Trend Micro or McAfee (or some other commercial product, I suppose), are there significant advantages to also running Malwarebytes from time to time? Seems this post outlines one disadvantage. Tracey's skills, together with the great help provided here, got her through this issue. I, on the other hand, would just freak out and after reading all this, probably just not run Malwarebytes unless it catches a whole bunch of stuff that the other programs missed. TIA!
