Attached Pergola to Shingle Roof

I am looking to install a Pergola alongside my pool that I would like to attach to my garage roof. The reason I don't want to put up a ledger is the height and loss of gutters. This will also allow me two less posts and will not interrupt the layout of entertaining area. I wish to pitch the pergola roof back toward the garage roof that has gutters, along with poly panels screwed to the top I can shelter from rain but still let some light in.

I wish to run the joists back over and on top of my asphalt shingle roof, any ideas how to attach?

I can't know what you are really trying to do without seeing a drawing but if you intend to put face nails into an asphalt roof at a point where water will be running into it from two directions you will invite a serious leak.

The only way to properly attach anything to a roof is to remove enough shingles to attach the two structures together and then properly flash the connection and then add shingles or metal counter flashing. It requires some common sense and respect for water's ability to be drawn into cracks and holes by capillary action.

Not a good idea in any area. Let alone the chance for leaks, the joists have a chance of up lifting in winds which makes it a dangerous situation. You would have to fasten with a series of connectors that would only increase the leaking. Get a consultaion from a builder or remodel expert who can explain how to properly tie it into your existing roof. Without seeing it, we can only generalize, but bottom line is, never fasten any structure in the manner that you have planned. It's simply a no go.

If it was my house, I would make the trellis totally independent of the house, using posts and beams on all corners so that the two structures can be independent and no worries about structural loads, movement or critters. Simple.

Problem with the site! Here is my dilemma: Hello, We are having a pergola built outside our back patio doors. We are hoping to attach most beams to the roof and have one pillar. In the pictures you can see we would put the pillar in the ground near the corner of dirt "island" and attach the other support beams to the roof, both on the right side (window) and the left side (over patio doors and the window). Online I saw two options for attaching an existing structure: (1) attached wood or metal to roof and then attach the support beams to that; (2) attach directly to the roof beams and reshingle over that. My concern is two-fold: (1) we need to replace the roof in 5-10 years; (2) we live Houston and gets LOTS of rain and hurricanes, I want to make sure no water gets inside (we barely survived Harvey and most of our neighbors were flooded). Our home was built in the 1960's.

I know nothing about structural engineering, but I'd say that if you really want a roof over the patio, option B appeals most to me. I think that option A would look really odd. Option C probably would too, with that large a span. Also, from what roofers tell me, every valley you add to your roof bumps up the cost when it's time to re-roof. I'll take a simple, boring straight roof any day. A straight roof also better if you want to add solar panels later (assuming it faces the right way). With all that said, I'm having trouble seeing any of them as very attractive. I'm no decorator, but in my mind, whatever you put there is going to close up the house and make it look less welcoming. That patio is 374 square feet. It'd be a little tight, but a single person good at planning could probably live with reasonable comfort in that much square area. Honestly, I think you may have made the patio too big to have a roof.

Thanks to both, combined with your answers and a local I have a plan.

Remove two rows of shingles, install blocking under roof deck between joists (hip roof), use ties, install individual flashings around and over pergola joists at roof tie-in, and reroof around each one.

i want to do the exact same thing to our back yard patio. the roof pitch is rather low so the only way to install a pergola would be to rest it on the roof. do you have pictures of your final design. i am very interested in how this turned out. feel free to email me at

I want to so the exact same thing, attach it to the roof of my house and rest the other side on a cement retaining wall. Could you pleaase e mail me pictures of final design? Thank you very much. Or does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get shade in an area like that? There is only cement and not sure if I can ancor anything else. Thanks. talba@mchsi.com

I am planning to do the same with a ledger board to the roof and the joists to ledger board with brackets. I would really like to see your design if you dont mind sending it to me. I appreciate it very much.

I would also be very interested in seeing the final result. I want to accomplish the very same idea over my front porch without having to interrupt existing porch, sidewalk, landscape, etc.
