How to reinstall the sound driver (?) on my computer

In an effort to add some more space, I was removing unused programs and accidentally removed the sound driver (or whatever its proper term is), I think. At any rate, I don't have the little speaker icon on the lower RH of the screen and when I go to Sounds on the control panel there is no audio device and no way apparently to add one. The end result, there's no sound coming from the computer speaker or from additional speakers.

Can you tell me how to readd that software? I have Windows XP.

in the Recycle Bin - the program isn't there. Would reinstalling Siverlight (I had removed it, too) help at all?

Try a System Restore first.

Click Start,> All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, when System tools window opens choose System Restore

Ok. So I hooked up the computer and looked at the driver for the ethernet. I did what was said and it says the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). It says this for the ethernet controller, the multimedia audio controller, the SM Bus controller and the Video Controller. I was asked if I restored to factory defaults.....well, I'm not sure. I just put in the restore cd and ran it. I thought that would take care of my problems, but it didn't. I did look at the back of the computer and didn't see anything. I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I don't think she had a separate card hooked up. The only thing I got with it is the monitor, the computer, the mouse, the keyboard and the speakers. And all the cd's that originally came with the computer. That's it, nothing else. It's only $45.00 to have this computer place fix the computer. I would appreciate it if anyone can walk me through to fix the problem. However, should I just take it to them because they will put the programs on there that I need for anti-virus and for cd-rom/dvd maker?

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

Yes, as long as you have a program that will "clone" the hard drive. Several free ones will do this. I use EaseUS ToDo for this purpose. It can copy files or make an image (clone) of the entire drive including operating system (Win 7, in your case) as well as all programs and applications. Look up some of these programs and read what they can and cannot do. But if you have the original Windows 7 disks, you have other choices as well. If you format your hard drive, you should start with a clean drive and then just re-install the OS and any programs plus your pictures, documents, etc. I don't understand why you would now be out of drive space just because you "loaded the system a couple of other times." How did you go about doing this?

Take a good look at duluthinbloomz helpful entry. This is a good example why I ask questions like this here rather than the Computer Forum. There I would have likely had someone say "check your volume control!" She -- explained exactly where to find the volume control and how to handle it ---- That is my kind of language! I love asking help from people who speak the same language and at the same speed! LOL BTW -- If help didn't come here, I would have had to go to the Computer Help Forum -- but always here first! Thanks everyone! Don't you just wonder if there will ever be a time of not needing those "Dah!" type reminders!

You do not mention a make and model?

Go to the manufacturers site and search for updated drivers being sure you use the correct model of computer.

Once you download and save your audio drivers
click Start
click Control panel
click Device manager
in the new window look down the left side for the audio
click the small arrow beside "Sound, video and game controllers" to drop down the files
RIGHT click on the appropriate file then
click Properties
in the new window click the Drivers tab
click "update driver...."

A new window will appear, follow along. It will offer to search for the drivers you downloaded but will probably offer you the chance to point to where you saved the file.

Not sure but you may be told to reboot to complete.

In future, you should be very careful when deleting things..if you do not know exactly what the program/utility is and exactly what it does, dont mess with it...you could end up with a non-functioning computer

Of course that would make all the difference, wouldn't it? It's a Lenovo/IBM X200. It was the 'Audio' file and I hope this works.

Truer words have rarely been spoken. In my defense, I knew that but I had also had several shots of good tequila (El Jimador); you may very well guess with complete accuracy how that activates the execrably-amateur IT guy in me.

Ok,

Don't forget to check the Device Manger too, the sound device is located there. You can right click on it choose uninstall then reboot and windows will look for it and attempt to reinstall it. This works about 50% of the time.

In the device manger look under, Sound , Audio, game controllers. Click the + or arrow to the left of the listing to expand the list. Your sound device should be the first one listed. Probably realtec or something like that.

The wee speaker in the corner's back and Itunes is audible. I'm going to try some Web radio....yes, KSDS is coming through loud and clear.
