Chimney Range Hood Install Question

Hi...

Please don't laugh. :)

We are installing a wall-mounted chimney range hood.

The instructions say to mount the hood on the wall first, THEN attach the 6" pipe between the hood and the ductwork in the ceiling.

We thought we could accomplish this by rolling the pipe tighter, inserting it into the ductwork, then letting it expand to click the seam together around the hood collar. But the pipe is too inflexible to do this.

So DH says the hood has to come down and the pipe attached first. BTW, DH thinks the crimped end of the pipe inserts into the ductwork and the straight end goes around the hood collar. Is that correct?

Any alternative ideas? The hood is quite heavy. Much thanks.

I am in the process of hanging a chimney island hood so I have been planning my install steps and working with an HVAC guy. To answer your questions, your DH is correct. The crimped end is inserted in the duct and the straight end goes on the outside of the collar since the air is moving in that direction.

Your DH needs to make sure that the hood is the correct distance for the 6" pipe. If it is correct, I would plan on only lowering the hood far enough to get the pipe on the collar of the hood. I plan on using saw horses to support mine (make sure you put a towel or something on the saw horses so as not to scratch the hood). Put the pipe on the collar and tape (the shiny foil tape is better than duct tape) to seal so air cannot leak (less air leakage, less noise). The tape will also stabilize the pipe. At this point raise the hood and insert crimped end into the duct and attach the hood to the wall. Again tape the pipe to the duct to seal. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately it confirms that we have to take down the hood. :(

Your idea to use saw horses is good. I don't think they will fit in our space, but it reminded me of DH's workmate bench which should.

I wish you had written the installation manual! Thanks again. :)

The vents are for when it's in recirculating mode. They aren't functional otherwise. So, it's a visual thing for you a to whether or not you want the duct cover flipped.

I would not recommend installing the hood before you install the backsplah that will go behind it! It could get scratched or otherwise damaged, working around it will be a pain in the behind, and the backsplasb installation will end up costing you more because it will take longer. Patience - you'll be cooking in there in no time at all.

kills me to see flex hoses laying in attic Building code doesn't allow flexible ducting for vent hoods anyway. So, you did the right thing. Corrugated pipes are prone to collecting grease, and that poses a fire hazard. For the same reason, you can't have any low points in your ducts. In fact, my local building inspector won't even allow you to have a duct that slopes down at any point. I didn't ask about level runs. But he was OK with our ducts that continuously slope up (or go vertical) from the hood to the exhaust on the roof. Also, be sure that you use the correct vent cap and/or backdraft damper (if you have those). Equipment made for bathroom use will gunk up with grease and stop working.

As long as the ductwork first the good is the appropriate 8”-12”, and it’s all hard metal, with no corrugated metal, the route that it takes through conditioned space is irrelevant. It’s the boundary between conditioned space and unconditioned space that you need to concern yourself with, and that must have the proper hardware. All of this should also be properly insulated, to prevent condensation.
