Avast question about version 4

I thought I posted this question earlier, but can't find it now. Please forgive me if I'm overlooking the answer.

In looking at Avast's user forum this morning I saw that lots of people are still having trouble after upgrading to version 5. People are posting today with problems.

Does anyone know how much longer version 4 will continue to update? I don't want to upgrade until I can feel reasonably certain doing so won't harm my PC

This is an Acer with WXP pro, Service Pack 2, possibly 3.

Jann, be certain that you do in fact have Service Pack 3 on your XP computer. I have had version 5.1.889 of Avast since it came out on my fully updated XP Media Center (Pro). I have had no trouble whatever with this version.

As to how much longer version 4 will continue to update, I have no idea.

I agree about the SP3...dont have XP right here but I believe that if you right click on "My Computer" and click on properties, it should tell you the Operating system and what Service pack you have..Update to SP3 if you havent...Avast 5.1.889 has not been an issue since day 1

I was looking for the version of Avast that I am using and found the key when I right clicked on the Avast ball, then About Avast. I didn't know it was stored on my PC.

yes you will need a cd for sure. The exe is the actual executable for the program that is what you will need, you will put it on your old pc and double click it to start the install process. I agree I would definitely get the free version of superantispyware and use it as your number one scanner for antispyware it is the best free one out there right now. I use an old version of zone alarm pro it does not update either but it works like a charm and is much less bloated. Several of the tech folks I know use some of the older versions just because they are lighter and still work fine. I know some day I will have to get a newer version but till then I love my old one. I do have a cd stored with all of my programs on them just in case I ever need to do a reinstall, I have them readily available. Owbist, than you for the valuable suggestions you have given me in the past. You wondered why I do manual updates rather than automatic. I remember only too well the "old days" when updates often caused problems after installation. I learned it was better to check here first before updating. Someone here usually knew about the problem (probably learned the hard way!) which gave me the chance to wait until the problem was solved. Since I turn the PC on only about once a week, manual updates work fine. Incidently, in case there are any more "Nervous Nellies" like me who are concerned about inadvertantly getting Avast's paid version, there is an option given about three steps into the update. And I kept my eyes open for that other stuff Avast wanted to install that you warned about. Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Cheers, J .

If you've checked the things that could have an indirect effect by choking resources - ie, you don't have too many windows open at the same time, you've cleared cache and history in the browser, your hard drive isn't near capacity and has been recently cleaned up and defragged, then you may be stuck. An old version installation of something like an antivirus program is likely to be auto-updated with the periodic check for threat profiles, which should happen no less than weekly. Meaning, you're fighting a losing battle. The old version will likely get replaced with the first update. If you can't find happiness with Avast, it may be time for you to try a different security program. A recent thread in this forum had a link to an article containing independent ratings. Good luck.

Ok, dumb question #127 - is there a way to be certain I download 5.1.889?

Hi jannaz,

Two helpers have asked you about Service Pack 3 and for good reason. Without Service Pack 3 installed on Windows XP you will not be getting automatic updates installed as they are issued. Using a computer without these updates is quite a security risk. Lets verify you have Service Pack 3 installed.

Please find the My Computer icon on the desktop, can't find it there, click Start and in the start menu look for My Computer once found, right click on it when it opens choose properties. It should say windows XP SERVICE PACK 3 under System.

your AVAST info you can get by right clicking on the AVAST ball down in the tray. Right click it then chose about avast to see the version number etc And do not forget to register your version so it continues to work for the full year.

Sorry Zep - It does say Service Pack 3. I would have posted back yelling for help with that, otherwise. Well, actually I probably would have just given up and called our repair guy.

Hi, Ravin! Yup - the one thing I do manage without feeling overwhelmed is registering.

So you both think version 5.1.889 is safe?

at least I think so. Downloaded, removed old, ran installer, then turned PC off and back on to see if I'd killed it--and so far, so good. Yea! Yea! Yea!

Glad you got it, didn't mean to sound so forceful was concerned about SP3. Looks like you're ok with that version 5.1.889 and it's running fine for you. You're right some users have issues with it. Looks like it will be fine on your computer.

Zep - no offense taken. Sometimes I forget my manners. A little rap on the knuckles never hurt anyone.

I am so grateful for the help I get here. If there was one thing I could go back and do over in my life, it would be to get in on the ground floor of computers. I am such a wuss about maintaining them. Most of the time everything goes just fine, but I'm always terrified I'll mess something up beyond repair.

For 'not' stupid question #127 if you hover your mouse pointer over the file you downloaded it should give you the info in a pop-up window.
Anything version 5 will update when you install and update avast.
Don't worry about 'messing something up', all of us have at one time or another. Always 'Google' before you execute and always have irreplaceable items on your computer backed up.
