I had a Judith sort of moment yesterday

I was in my favorite Salvation Army yesterday and my eyes fell on these marvelous vintage crystal plates-- four dinner plates, four smaller plates. They've got a cut glass look to them and it clicked with me at that moment that they were precisely the thing I needed for my Christmas table I've been working on.

I think I was reminded of all the great things Judith has done with crystal, and I snapped them up.

I got all 8 for 9 dollars, and the moment I put them on my table, it was confirmed-- yup, that's what needed to be there.

Gotta love the thrift stores!

I'll try to take pics when I get it all together.

Jenn, Oh....I am so jealous! I have crystal dessert bowls, bread and butter plates and salad plates but I do not have the dinner plates, you are soooo lucky, your table will be beautiful, and what a wonderful price too!! I can barely wait for photos!!

Well, what a lovely lot of messages to see! Thank you so much, all of you. Yes,LA, Saturday was the day - but it all gets a bit blurry :) So many wonderful plantings in your photos. I think if anything has changed over the last decade it has been the beautiful, relaxed, informal use of roses and perennials in so many people's gardens now shown on this Forum - moving away from the old 'roses only' tyranny. For me, of course, this was the essence of Graham Thomas's (and David Stone's) lifetime in roses. The recovery of so many of the Old Roses was crucial, but just as important has been the re-discovery of how to garden with them. I've had a day dead-heading the rose garden at Mottisfont. A quiet day - the others are away at a trade exhibition - on my own except for a regular trickle of visitors. Sunshine, blue skies and a cooling breeze. Maybe this was my real birthday. Ingrid - especially to you - thank you so much for your kind words. I hope you will soon be seeing much greater photos from your own new garden, and it is a pleasure to have your company on this Forum. Best wishes Jon

Sue, I am so glad you are OK! I was at the doc yesterday and happened to be reading about signs of a heart attack. I never knew until yesterday that a jaw tightening up was a sign. So glad you went to the ER, too. Don't be afraid of 911! My dad died when I was 13 due to heart problems. In retrospect, I CANNOT believe nothing was really done for him. I remember walking home from the train w/him, and he would have to stop because of the pain in his chest. He was thin and had textbook perfect blood pressure. I remember him having some medicine (patches?) for angina, but that is about it. My dad may have survived IF someone would have called 911. He thought he had indigestion, and his co-workers called my house. My sis (15 then) answered and told them they should call 911. They drove him to the ER instead, and he died at the hospital. We never got to see him again. They apologized at the wake. Too little, too late. So relieved everyone else who has posted is OK, too. No one really talks about heart disease for women, and isn't it the most common cause of death among women? Trail, I had no idea you were a cardio RN. I will remember you rules!

Ah, Lavender, you have truly hit upon a not-such-a-coincidence. How lovely that story is. I wish you would, at some time this winter when it is too cold to go out, put that into a story for your nieces, and illustrate it just like the Jo Koch books....the tea, coffee, etc picture books. You just outlined the basic theme of the book/story, and to have it short and to the point, but with the traditional uses of herbs, what a great wintertime project!! And while you're at it, think about putting some lavender around your mailbox too. Or perhaps put some poison ivy around it to punish those who would whack it with a baseball bat. Please remember to put in some nasturtiums somewhere. They like cooler weather, and I cannot grow them in south Alabama. They go to seed almost immediately, unlike the 100 foot rows of blooms I could plant up here in MA. You are a creative little lady, so go for the book!!

Jenn, can't wait to see photos!I bet your table will be beautiful. Crystal always adds so much sparkle to a table.

I love Judith's crystal bowls that she used in her Christmas tablesetting with the plaid plates.

The crystal really does help bounce some wonderful light around the room, which it needs-- it's usually a bit dark in my diningroom.

I had been thinking of Judith's marvelous pink and crystal Christmas table. It's such a delight! Mine is doing a bit of a crystal, green and gold thing at the moment...

In between all of the half-empty boxes of decorations, etc. I need to put away! :-)

PS-- While you're online and I remember to mention it-- hope you're feeling okay, Judith!

Jenn, that is the nice thing about the clear crystal, it goes with with most anything! Thanks for the well wishes, I finally got my surgery date, (after they could not get me in earlier) Dec 6. Not looking forward to recouperating over Christmas. :(

I am sorry I was not here to offer a get well to Judith but I insist she must be or she would not be posting; however, if our Judith is what we know her to be, no sickness is going to deter her from lurking on a forum that might have serving ware and bunnies. Hugs to you, Judith. Get well for Santa.

Judith posted just above that her surgery date is Dec. 6th.

At least that gives her a little bit of time to get organized and ready for it and her recovery time.

Jenn, I know what you mean about the boxes that need put away--I've been decorating all day and have empties to get stashed away too. My feet are so tired and my head too--so many decisions for one day! LOL

I guess you have to make a mess in order to pretty things up... :-) It's definitely a lot of work, but I think it's worth it. Luvs, put those feet up for a while and rest! You've earned it.
