help with maxtor external drive

I have a One Touch Mini 4 160GB. I have been using it successfully to backup only files, photos, music, etc.

It is full, I need to delete some of the old files so I can room to continue backing up my files.

I do not see how to delete these.

I am using windows XP.

should be as it is with any, hooked up to the pc go to that drive Letter as listed in your My computer look through the files on it find the ones you want to delete right click them select delete. Have you tried that?

Your post suggests you keep numerous backups of the same computer. Why? Surely only the latest back up is relevant. When I create a back up I also copy my My Documents to the external drive once those 2 tasks have been done I remove the previous back up and My Documents.

I have an external Western Digital 80 GB drive and have had no problems for 3 years (after I did a surface scan on it). I recommend a surface scan before using the drive. My drive had a few bad sectors that had not been marked off and these casued some pecular problems until this was discovered. It took 30 min to 1 hr to do a thorough surface scan but was well worth it. I noted in your post that you intend to have 'programs' as well as data on this external drive and may use this drive on another computer. Beware that if the programs are "installed" Windows programs, this may not work. It may work if the programs are of the stand alone variety such as code for BASIC, complied FORTRAN, or Visual Basic embedded in an EXCEL work sheet.

Go to control panel and open System Icon - Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... - Right click Realtek AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - Update Driver. To update you will need the CD that came with your computer. First right click your speaker Icon and open Volume control and make sure your sound is not muted. Located on your lower right. If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound. Windows XP See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under Windows Audio. Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped Left click Windows Audio and click restart. - Or Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start If still no sound next try this But be careful because your in the Registry and you can harm your computer. You should make a Registry Backup first. Go to Start>Run, type in regedit and hit ok. Navagate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound "Beep" and "ExtendedSounds" should both be set to "yes" in order for the speakers to work. Before changing the Registry you need to make a Backup. You can download ERUNT and make a backup. This is best but it has a feature named Optimize. Don't use it. After using it, it took me 2 days to get my computer back to normal. Start - Run Type regedit - My Computer should be highlighted Go to File - Left top - Left click Export - The word Backup - Save. When time to use it don't go to were it's saved, go back to regedit. Start - Run - regedit - OK - File - Import - Right click Backup - Left click Merge. Anyway that's the way I do it.

I just bought an external drive this week and love it. Apart from being able to free up space on C:\, it is good for arranging automatic backups. I have it set to back up all of my documents, music, and pictures 4 days a week at a time when I am not going to be using the computer. Until now, I had been putting these backups on CDs and DVDs, but it is too easy to forget to make those backups, and it is also a nuisance saving and keeping track of the disks I saved them on. I like the way I can just drag things to the icon for the external drive, too. Easier than burning a CD or DVD, and it has the advantage that you can erase things and use that space again, the way you might on a floppy or a zip disk. My external drive is a 500GB Maxtor that I found on sale Mon. at Fry's in San Diego, for only $99.99. (They seem to change the products on sale from day-to-day, so I don't guarantee anyone will find the same thing at the same price another day. DH paid the same there the day before I did, but he only got a 300GB Maxtor external hard drive) Today a friend who has a business servicing other companies' computers told me he considers Western Digital's hard drives to be among the best, so you got a good one. However, I was happy when he also said I had gotten a bargain. Guess this is the time of year to look for bargains in computer stuff! I probably should mention that since my FireFox browser's "Bookmarks" (=Favorites in I.E.) and things I have saved in its "Scrapbook" add-on, or extension, are not located in My Documents and thus do not come under the automatic backing up, I am going to take care to back them up to the external drive manually every few days.

Do you need to copy and paste things on the external HD? I shouldn't think so. Apart from the automatic backing up we have it set to do, if there is any individual file or folder we want to put on it, we simply left click on the file's or folder's icon and drag it to the icon for the external HD and it gets copied there. We installed the entire Oxford English Dictionary program on my husband's computer's external HD and it works fine, but a couple of other programs just wouldn't run right when we tried to install them on it. Come to think of it, the OED has a verification process by which you have to show the computer that you actually possess the CDs for it, and that may be why the company doesn't mind which drive you keep it on. We haven't tried downloading any programs to the ext. HD yet, but it seems likely to me that many--especially the expensive programs that don't provide for periodically proving that you have the CDs--will very likely not run well from there. However, from what Cboy writes, with the help of Acronis, it looks like you can backup the whole of your internal HD, which would include programs. So, being new to external HDs myself (a 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4), I'd like to ask Cboy if you can actually remove programs from C:\ (to save space) and then run them from the external drive instead, or if what Acronis does is only to save them so you can reinstall them in C:\ after a disaster and run them from there.

ok you need to tell us what you are doing so we don't have to try to guess, what exactly have you tried how are you attempting to do it etc the more info you give us the more we have to make educated suggestions.

Today I tried to add several more folders and got the message saying the Maxtor was full. It is 160GB. I right clicked on the Icon on my task bar and opened view backup log. The only date showing on the page that opened up is from the back up dated Monday Jan 3.
I then tried going to explorer found the Maxtor opened it up found all the files that I store and use daily and in this folder was a folder that says Maxtor backup. Opened this up there are two files one says Home and some numbers the other file says user and has some numbers. When I opened the file that says Home it has two file folders one says C and the other file says History which in the history has 10 file folders each name level one level two and so on.

In the User file folder it has 3 folders one says C one says D and one says history. I think this must be from my old computer 2 years ago. As I had a C drive and a D drive. This new computer only has the C drive.
I hope this helps. I am not too computer smart and no one in my family nor friends use computers.

When you open these folders, is there a date that would indicate when the backup was made? If so, you could easily delete the old ones by right clicking each item and choose delete. That would free up some space pretty quickly.

To locate files that have been backed up depends on the software that was used.

The following is a list of backup applications that come with Seagate / Maxtor Ã¯Â¿Â½ Brand products and where on the external drive the data is stored.
