Firefox 9

Somehow Firefox updated me to version 9. That was the last thing I wanted to happen. I have now rechecked my restrictions on updates so hopefully I can prevent further updates.

This is a prime example of why I do not want all the bells and whistles that are thrown my way. Little things were changed that are a nuisance but the main objection is that the update seems to have slowed up my system. I barely had time to enjoy the speed change from dial up to uverse.

If I could do a system restore and get rid of version 9 I would do it in a flash or if there was some other way I could get back to my previous version I would do that in a flash too.

Also, just fyi, FileHippo is a good, safe site for downloading software, and they have a list of past versions in the right hand column.

So, clicking to view information on FF 10 beta will produce the following page (notice old versions at right):

I had similar issues with FF updating automatically and then not working and causing problems. I went back to an older version per instructions I found here and it works great now. My observation these days, there are so many programs that have an automatic update (Windows, Adobe, FF, security software and so on) that they can cause frustrations too. Nothing worse than working on something and have the computer bogged down suddenly with checking for and or downloading updates automatically. This might not work for everyone but for me, I've found that using the option most programs have of "Notify me of updates but do not download" will give me the reminder I need and when I'm finished a particular task, let the download begin and go take a break.

Thanks all! I removed the copy of firefox and reinstalled 3.5. I think I found the problem. Somehow firefox was loaded but not displayed. I restarted the computer and it unloaded firefox. When it restarted the icon on the dt worked. It was ver 3.5 from mozilla home page. I apologize for the post on RC trips and tricks. I appreciate all the help. John in AL

You would probably eliminate the problem, by going down to the version of firefox, you had before upgrading. Your system is older, and some of the requirements for the newer version of firefox, you just may not have on that computer. :-)) I also run XP, and I use firefox. I am running version 9.0 and it works perfectly. I could go a couple updates higher, but, when something is working great, best not to mess with it, especially on an older system. Also, notice above recommendations to update your IE. You should be aware, that some XP computers will not run IE8 very well, and some will. Most will run ie7 without any problems. Please check all system requirements when you decide to update or download something on a system that is using XP and enjoy using that computer for a long time yet. Good Luck to you.

Jane, There is a wave of concern where users are beginning to feel more like beta testers rather than end users. This rapid fire Firefox release approach may come back to haunt Mozilla particularly with no substantial browser improvements. The interesting thing is v9.0 was released on December 20th and two days later v9.0.1 was released. Looks to me like v9.0 beta 6 could have used a little more testing. DA

I went back to version 8. I did not recover the old screen composition but did regain the speed I lost with version 9.

I use a lot of 3 tier screens on bookmarks. The screens used to be smaller but now they are so big that when the third tier screen pops up it flips back to the left side overlaying the first tier screen. Both screens being white on white makes for a split second look to see where the starting point is. A nuisance and unnecessary change in my book.

I updated FireFox to 9 also and I hate it! If I download #8 do I need to uninstall 9 or will installing 8 over ride 9?

BTW, I was notified today there is another version 9.01 or something. I won't bite this time!

Whenever I've "downgraded" from a higher version of a browser to a lower one, I usually just install the "lower" version over the present one. Hardly ever found a problem in doing so. In fact, I myself did that with FF on occasion (upgrading to 8, then installing 6.0.2 over that).

I am not a fan of overwrites unless recommended by the manufacturer. However, since your bookmarks and preferences are stored separately from the application folder, either way should be fine. Just remember to deny the offering to remove bookmarks and preferences when uninstalling.

I forgot this.

The "somehow" is most likely that you have the updating set to automatic. To turn it off: Tools> Options>Advanced>Update tab>In the appearing window uncheck Firefox, also add-ons and search engines if you wish>OK.

v8.0 should be just fine as I read that v9.0 was defined as a developer's release. And when the change log reportsin general,

Fixed several stability issues
Fixed several security issues

I just wonder.
