Windows 7 problems

Hi everyone!

I just bought a new laptop running Windows 7 on a 17" screen. My problem is that web pages (including Gardenweb and especially games) opened up with small print. I changed the zoom level to 120%. It helped with mixed results. Gardenweb filled the screen normally, some webpages open with text printed over other text. The worst thing (to me) is that the game sites I play on have very small windows and zoom does not change them at all.

I've searched databases for a remedy, to no avail. Anyone else have this issue?

Was this problem like this when you purchased it or did it just occur?

you do not want to use the zoom feature you want o go into your browser and change the font type and size to your liking. If you use firefox it is in tools> options under the content tab you can choose your font type and set the size for larger like 16 or 18.

if you find you have problems on the computer itself with things being too small there like on the desktop or when opening your files that would be a different setting, changing the dpi to a larger number might help you out.

If you use IE some one will be able to tell you where to change your font and size I no longer use it and am on my linux machine so can not look. I think it is tools internet options but not sure the tab.

From my experience with W 7 & 8...I would google Classic Shell and see if it is compatible with W 8.1, if it is I would go with it. I think every computer I have had except ME has been faster than the last one. Classic Shell is a great software that converts the W8's into a computer more like the version we are use to. My Acer laptop is very fast and the monitor part moves to comfortable positions for your vision, especially if you have mid range vision. It converts from a laptop to a tablet, a very large tablet.

If you were working on the files prior to the update and had saved them as per normal, there shouldnt have been any file loss for just doing the update. Should that happen again which I have never experience, you could just do a system restore back a few hours to before you did the update. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tool>System restore

I had a similar problem with that update, it caused one of my PCs to freeze up and then not reboot correctly. It happens from time to time that an update can cause a hiccup. I don't know enough about it to know why. In my case, it just needed a "kick" - a safe mode reboot. I made no update setting changes, the PC proceeded with the update install and all is well. You might try doing that, and more than once if necessary, the problem should pass.

Neglected to mention that these are double hung 4 over 1 windows to replicate my original existing windows. There's also the unsightly gap between the "new" sill and the existing sill upon which it rests - it happens when the existing sill is not the same angle as the 8ÃÂ ordered (By the way there are only three options available 0ÃÂ, 8ÃÂ & 14ÃÂ) No instructional information has been provided on how to address the sill gap issue in videos or instructions. And of course the sample display window doesn't have that problem..... Will I ever get a good night's sleep again ;-)

Zep516, it's been like this from the beginning,

Raven, I went in and told it to ignore preset fonts. That helped a lot on the web pages! Thanks.

My favorite game site is still opening with very small windows, though. I'll continue to search to see what is going on with this game site. It's not affecting all game sites, so it may be the site itself. May be a clue that I'm too old to be playing games, huh?

well still don't know what browser we are dealing with here, what you need to do is change your default font size in the browser so that you have the font size you want on all pages that open and save that once set. I can not tell you how with out knowing which browser.

Now opening in a small window is a totally different issue has nothing to do with the font and text sizes. Do you have 2 different issues happening?

It might also help to know, exactly what game site and game you are referring to. Are you using Internet Explorer or Firefox?????

Sorry, I use IE8. I went into -options-general-accessibility-ignore font sizes. I did not see an option to change font size.

To be a little clearer, when I say small game window - the window, the text and the game board is smaller that normal. I'm getting small game windows and on Pogo and on freeonlinemahjonggames.net/fruit-mahjong.

I can play with full-sized windows on my son's computer.

How to Change Font Size in Internet Explorer

In general these options should be in IE8
In Internet Explorer 8 go to the View menu (if it's displayed) then pick Text size, select larger or largest. It should change to size of text, etc. within your browser.

Check the system font setting:

Settings--> Control Panel--> Display--> Appearance. The system font size setting is near the bottom.

I would suggest you download firefox browser and give it a try, you should have at least 2 browsers on your pc anyway for safety sake should IE fail to work. In firefox it is extremely easy to change your font type and size as I stated earlier.

Wondering if someone might have gotten into the screen resolutions and increased it making things smaller.

The web pages are looking pretty good on IE. I occasionally have one where some of the text is overlapping other text. I checked the screen resolution and it are fine. It's a new computer and there's been no one here but me, so it is in its 'out of the box' state.

I have also downloaded Firefox. I went in and changed the text size to 18 and it makes webpages much easier to read.
After lots and lots of reading about my game sites, it seems that this may be a problem related to the site itself.
