Do you know if you have the common chickweed or the mouse ear chickweed? The common chickweed is considered a winter annual and the mouse ear(Very hairy leaves) is considered a perennial, but I have heard it can act as a winter annual in Oklahoma sometimes. But, being a perennial may explain why it still came up even though you put a pre emergent down. It may have stopped more seeds from germinating though. It seems like I have seen the weed germinate in early spring, die out in the summer, and then germinate again in the fall and then be winter killed or stay green through the winter. About the time you were re-seeding should have been the time to be putting down the Barricade, but we know you cannot do that and re-seed at the same time. Oct-Nov is about the time chickweed germinates. I would try a test patch as philes and morph mention above and you could put down some more Barricade as long as your TTTF is established. If there are any more seeds, it will keep them from germinating. It may also keep crabgrass from germinating early next spring.

O for heavens sake - I have removed loads of this (and Japanese Knotweed, goutweed, trumpet vine and other supposedly immortal plants). Round up definitely does work but I would suggest an awful lot of posters on this thread are not reading the instructions. Multiple sprayings over a few weeks, spraying roots, spraying tiny bits of foliage...and so on. Round up is completely effective when used correctly, at the right time, when foliage cover is at peak growth...which is late spring or autumn. The exceptions usually involve plants with a lot of silicone which will require the cell walls to be ruptured (by crushing) or a direct dosage into the plant capillary system (usually done with knotweed or giant hogweeds). Personally, I find the autumn spray to be more effective as the plant has the maximum amount of foliage and is at the pivot point where top growth/root growth balance is tipping back towards the roots, where we want the glyphosate to do it's nefarious work. It takes up to 6 weeks before the effects of Round Up can even be seen so multiple sprayings is overkill. Using Round Up at incorrect dosages is also a waste - using a stronger mix is no guarantee of eventual success. For a really bad infestation, 2 sprays, one in spring and a later one when there is sufficient regrowth (which is towards the end of summer) will kill 995 of houtynnia. Further vigilance the following season, with careful hand weeding, will finish the problem. Finally, in the annals of pesticides and chemical use, Round Up is comparatively innocuous, compared to the bad old days of sodium chlorate, DDT and so on. Whilst daily use is obviously undesirable, a timed and targeted spray is not tantamount to the ninth circle of hell...whereas untreated infestations of invasives is a whole lot worse.

That marigold, MHGirl, discourages nematodes and kills bindweed! Can you imagine the value?? This is from Alabama Coop Ex Service but they give some more insight on nematodes suppression. And, they mention that Mexican marigold species. They do say this, "All French dwarf cultivars are not equally effective in controlling a mixed population of several root-knot nematode species.. . A few marigolds scattered through a vegetable garden will not control plant parasitic nematodes. For effective nematode suppression with marigolds, solid seed the garden with a recommended cultivar from Table 2. Maintain the solid stand of marigolds for at least 2 months and then turn them under with a plow or rototiller as green manure." I wonder what they are talking about with the value of rapeseed . . . ? Dwarf Essex is not an uncommon cover crop. I drifted off looking at nematode resistant tomato varieties. The nastiness of these pests in the carrots where I can see the problems makes me wonder what damage they do to tomato roots. The fact that my favorite hybrids are nematode-resistant varieties may be explained by their ability to set good crops despite the nematodes. Steve

When I was growing up we had a cat that was put in the basement at night. In the morning we would let him out, and he would race around the house (it was a circle layout) and disappear back down the stairs. Several minutes later he would calmly re-emerge. It was his routine, and everything else in the house just stopped for that minute.
