siding decision: hardi, nucedar (pvc) and apex (fiberglass)
Comments (17)We are going to be doing Apex siding on our 100+ year old house in Boston. I did a ton of online research on the different siding products and ordered samples. We were seriously considering the Everlast composite siding, but they didn't have it in a smooth finish (without the cedar imprint) and it had a shine to it when the light hit it certain ways. So I just couldn't do it. Then I started reading about Apex. It has not been used in the Boston area, but we contacted the company and they put us in touch with the New England manager. He told us they were using it on Cape Cod Lumber's new building in Abbington. We drove down to look at it. They were using the Apex boards with Azek trim. It looked just like clapboard -- really! We LOVED it. So we got the name of a contractor that could install it for us -- Yeti (a new name for South Shore Exteriors). They're supposed to start May 1st -- can't wait!. Now the issue centers on the Azek -- I want gray trim and don't want to paint it. I found this product from Jain called EX-cel that is pvc trim board with the color right through it. Has anyone used this stuff? Can you tell me anything about it? Thx! Here is a link that might be useful: Link to EX-cel color palette page...See MoreGeorgia Pacific Cedar Spectrum OR Certainteed Cedar Impressions
Comments (2)WE are building two homes that I designed for my girlfriend and for her brother. We looked at both and I preferred the certainteed for the realistsic looks and color. The grooves were deeper and shadow lines heavier and felt a bit heavier but I never really checked the actual weight /thickness. The GP was about $50/ square less if I remember right and it was decided to go with GP. One went with a tan or taupe color I cant remember exact name. My girlfriends house is on the lake and we chose the steel blue /gray color. It wasnt as deep blue as the certainteed but we used a white trex pvc trim for all the rakes, fascias, freiezes etc and this helped make it read as a deeper blue. All in all Im still very pleased with the look. The quality appears to be pretty decent as much as one can tell with it up less than 6 months. Fading apears to be less of a concern with modern manufacturing techniches. I personally love the look of cedar shingles but this gives that look with out the continuous maintainence of staining /painting. It also gives options for some fun colors. The texture is nice either way and its about the same cost as stucco we found. Everyone thats seen it loves them both. Some colors look better than others and certainteeds looked better in some and GP in others . There are several other manufacturers out there but these are the two I found looked most realistic. I had a client use the certainteed and likes it as well. One other I really like is by quality edge. It was also a bit more expensive but I liked therealistic look and colors pretty well that I saw a few years back at a trade show. Good luck...See MoreCertainteed Cedar Shake Siding

Comments (10)We finished our custom craftsman inspired build a year ago. Since it was our retirement home, and it’s located in New England, we chose to use PlyGem Mastic vinyl siding to reduce maintenance. We had the same concerns about the J channel and also wanted to reduce that “vinyl siding look.” We used a combination of shingles and board and batten for a more upscale look. PVC trim can be done on site, but we used a custom PVC trim product called Trim Solutions to hide the J channels and all the fasteners. The window surrounds are custom sized to your windows, built in a controlled environment, and installed as one piece. Different profiles are available to get the look you want. We added in some other small details that were in keeping with the craftsman feel of our home and these also helped to soften the “vinyl look."...See Morejamie81
