Finally have a start date. Any recs for dust containment

I was waiting for a vanity to arrive from Italy for my project to start, and it is coming in tomorrow. Contractor says he can start July 10th. It has been a long wait, since I ordered the vanity back in March.

Anyway, I live in a condo, so I am pretty much expecting awful dust everywhere. There is a balcony where they will be doing tile cutting. I was planning on asking them to cover the furniture with plastic and seal off the bedroom door (I am moving out) with plastic. Any other suggestions to minimize the spread of all that demo and construction mess?

Since you won't be living there, how about turning the AC unit way up. Buy the good pleated filters for the AC return airs and change them out often during dusty construction. During the sheetrock and texture phase we changed ours every Sunday. Block return air vents if you're not using certian rooms. Stuff towels under door ways. Use a shop vac with a good filtration system. Buy one of the filters that is made specifically for the fine dust like sheetrock dust. Put things away in closets that you won't be using so they'll not collect dust and you won't have to spend hours cleaning them. Remove and store curtains. You might not be there to do this but there were some demo projects that DH would have me right along side with him, with the shop vac to suck up airborne debris as he was using a saw (on an object that couldn't be taken outside). I hate this part of remodeling and they sure don't zoom in on this part on all those wonderfully addicting remodel shows on HGTV!!

We're remodeling about 50% of our house while living here. We packed stuff in boxes as if we were moving. We also have hung plastic sheets in doorways to try to keep dust in the areas getting the most work. So far, the 3 upstairs bedrooms and basement where we're living haven't gotten too bad with the dust. Maybe, it's also helping to have windows open at this time of year.

Risa ... I did a google search on key words "southern california fall blooming plants" and got lots of interesting hits. The one below lists some flowers you may find useful. I was thinking Nandina [no flowers, but lovely, lacy redish foliage] which would look great as a taller background plant. Also using sweet alyssum as a low growing edging or ground cover. If you can find potted cosmos, please consider ... they are just lovely. Also consider butterfly bush as one of the larger plants at rear of planter. Also, if you just wander around a nursery with pen and pad ... write names that you like, size and price . Then at library with the Sunset book, make a chart of plant size from this list. Then on graph paper plot the whole area. Sounds like a lot of work, but so worth it. Having your whole family over in your new home ... how lovely! One last thing.... please get a cheap notebook and start a garden journal ... in my journal I have separate pages for roses, trees, etc. And then a chart for the garden area. I live in north Orange County and just started my first batch of tomato seeds on January 20. I grow seedlings both for my own use and to sell, the plant sales go to subsidize all the money I spend on my gardening habit. Last year I started my first batch on January 24, but that was too early for plant sales as they were ready to plant around the first or second week of March but most customers weren't in the planting mood that early, even though there was very little chance of a hard freeze as of that date. I finally sold them, but they were getting really big by then, 14 to 18 inches high. This year the first batches were early maturing varieties like Stupice and Matina, as well as Cherry types like Black Cherry, Juliete, Ildi, and Isis Candy. I ran out of Sun Gold seeds or would be planting them too. As far as plant sales go, just at the best planting time the Fullerton Arboretum has its monster tomato and pepper sale, billed as the biggest sale west of the Mississippi, and they sell 30,000 to 40,000 plants in a weekend. I lose a lot of potential sales even though customers who have seen my plants and theirs say mine are definitely superior. I have over $500 invested in a giant 21 tube fluorescent light seed starting stand, heating mats, seed, trays, pots, seed starting mixture, fertilizer, Pro-Mix potting soil, etc., plus the electricity to run this. If besides my expenses I included the value of my time I am probably working for a dollar an hour. But the income from the plant sales does let me many new varieties every year, and partially pays for compost and tomato cages and water and fertilizer for my own garden, and the left over seeds can be used for several years, in fact I had some 8 year old seed come up.

They put plastic on the doorways for messiest bit. It helped but there was still dust in all the bedrooms. I noticed when he started cutting drywall, he ran wide masking tape around the cracks of the door to seal the doorway. This seemed to help more. Not sure why he didn't do it when they were demoing.

If you tape plastic sheets, be sure to use the blue painters' tape instead of masking tape so you won't have problems with your paint coming off when you peel the tape or glue reisdue.
