Legally it might be awkward without the UL approval although in practice, many appliances these days are used throughout the world. Things still need to have UL but in practice, chances are they have tougher safety standards over there than in the US. As for the voltage, a lot of stuff there is still 240v. A variation of 10 volts isn't excessive, it's less than 5%. That should not be an issue. Any a/c motors may on the other hand be an issue, since the UK is 50hz and we are 60hz. Motors and old style clocks would run slow. I actually remember plugging a 110/120v super-8 projector we brought from Canada into NZ (also 240/50) into a transformer, so it was getting the right voltage, but the different hz must have really disagreed with it, because it started smoking pretty much straight away. Stuff now is a lot more travel-friendly and of course anything dc (running through a transformer/rectifier etc within the appliance) won't be an issue. Since it's probably all electronic that much would be ok. You probably can be exempted from VAT but you'll pay duty etc I'm sure.....for the big bucks you are talking, and no warranty, I doubt it's worth the trouble. I hate being held over a barrel by local distributors (kiwis and aussies can tell you how you get ripped off by the 'exclusive agents' arrangement) but it's probably the best way to go in your case.

OT a little When my sisters came back after WW2 one went to fashion design school and had to have a dress form. She bought a kit which was a piece of cheesecloth that went over her head and body , And lick 'em Stick 'em old fashioned packing tape. She'd stand in the kitchen and we'd take turns wrapping her up in that tape until she looked like a dress form. Then she had to keep standing until it really dried then we took a knife and made a slit down the back so she could get out of it. Then she sealed up the slit. The kit came with a stand of some sort so it could stand alone. You could probably still find one of those kits on ebay.... what a time that was!! I bet your son will get a kick out of this story.
