Since you didn't share information about your system armed with this information only you can decide.

IE8 is fine just as Firefox is. Diversity is what makes the world go round.

OK, I have IE8 installed, so I thank you. Now I have to get brave and install Firefox. I'm running Windows XP2, with 67.2 GB, and 45 GB free.

No bravery required for Firefox. Just download and install. It won't affect IE or mess with your computer. You can also copy your bookmarks over to Firefox in a few seconds (they will stay on IE, so you can use either).

Think I would wait a week before installing firefox because by then you will probaby made a few configuration changes to IE - When you install firefox it will ask if you want to add you IE Favorites and match IE settings. Will save you some fumbling with firefox configurations that you are unfamiliar with.

Hi based on your suggestions to Phyliss I just installed IE8

Boy the page looks different. I installed for XP It also said after rebooting to go to tools and click on Windows update which I'll do.

I have a couple of questions what do I do with IE6?
What about the icons on my desktop
I Have an Internet Explorer icon Does this mean the info from the old IE6 is just gone and now everything will be IE8 or do I have to do something?

I also have he icon in my lower taskbar which now has a little halo type thing which I didn't notice before .
Do I just leave everything alone?

leave it alone when you did the update it should have taken care of everything you are mentioning, the IE icons will now open your new IE8, IE6 is still in windows and should be able to be used if you were to remove IE8 and revert back to IE6 but that is certainly not advised.

anytime you add a new browser when it asks if you want to import your settings, faves, homepage,etc from the old one say yes so that your new one will have all that the old one had as you had it set up, it will even copy your favorites list for you so you have all of those on the new one.
It will also ask if you want to make firefox your new default browser or not when you first install firefox you don't have to do that you can always change it later if you decide you love it and want it to be the default. Also when you first install firefox it will open to the firefox home page to let you know you have successfully installed it, that does not mean it has changed your homepage to firefox, it does that one time only, if you shut it down and re-open it you will find it opens to your homepage if you had it copy all of your settings that is.
