Changing browser

I have had IE6 forever but know I have to change. My question is whether I can jump to IE8. I had tried IE7 some time ago, and it was just a headache, so I uninstalled it. I know, I know, you are all going to say go to Firefox, and I plan to, but can I go to IE8 now? Thanks for any info you can give me.

And I thought I was the last hold out...avoiding FF. LOL I could kick myself for not getting it sooner. I really like the adblock plus.

A basic Google search using the keywords "ie8 system requirements" (sans quotes) produced the below link.

Since you didn't share information about your system armed with this information only you can decide.

IE8 is fine just as Firefox is. Diversity is what makes the world go round.

This actually takes quite a bit of time to look up, so for a lot of them that I know are on answersthatwork, I'm just going to refer you to that link - rather than just copy and paste here. Basically though, these things take up memory, and if you're short on memory it can slow things down. So if you don't need them to be running all the time, disable them. If you don't need them at all, uninstall the program itself. A lot of programs will start them up when the programs starts anyway, so they don't need to be running all the time. But some programs (like OneNote) do need to have them running, all the time. Here's my annotated response. By looking at the file path you can see which program they are associated with : C:\Program files\microsoftoffice\office14\bscsync.exe/delayservices For the ability to sync and cache external data on a SharePoint server. If you're not syncing to a server, you can probably disable it. c:\program files/commonfiles/adobe/arm/1.0\adobearm.exe. Read the description and recommendation on answersthatwork.com --Probably leave as is because it only runs at startup, then terminates. OK, I have IE8 installed, so I thank you. Now I have to get brave and install Firefox. I'm running Windows XP2, with 67.2 GB, and 45 GB free.

No bravery required for Firefox. Just download and install. It won't affect IE or mess with your computer. You can also copy your bookmarks over to Firefox in a few seconds (they will stay on IE, so you can use either).

Think I would wait a week before installing firefox because by then you will probaby made a few configuration changes to IE - When you install firefox it will ask if you want to add you IE Favorites and match IE settings. Will save you some fumbling with firefox configurations that you are unfamiliar with.

Thank you.....I think I will wait a few days at least, although IE8 seems to be doing what I want; had a few adjustments in my mind to make!

Hi based on your suggestions to Phyliss I just installed IE8

Boy the page looks different. I installed for XP It also said after rebooting to go to tools and click on Windows update which I'll do.

I have a couple of questions what do I do with IE6?
What about the icons on my desktop
I Have an Internet Explorer icon Does this mean the info from the old IE6 is just gone and now everything will be IE8 or do I have to do something?

I also have he icon in my lower taskbar which now has a little halo type thing which I didn't notice before .
Do I just leave everything alone?

Thanks in advance I too will wait a while to do the FF

leave it alone when you did the update it should have taken care of everything you are mentioning, the IE icons will now open your new IE8, IE6 is still in windows and should be able to be used if you were to remove IE8 and revert back to IE6 but that is certainly not advised.

anytime you add a new browser when it asks if you want to import your settings, faves, homepage,etc from the old one say yes so that your new one will have all that the old one had as you had it set up, it will even copy your favorites list for you so you have all of those on the new one.
It will also ask if you want to make firefox your new default browser or not when you first install firefox you don't have to do that you can always change it later if you decide you love it and want it to be the default. Also when you first install firefox it will open to the firefox home page to let you know you have successfully installed it, that does not mean it has changed your homepage to firefox, it does that one time only, if you shut it down and re-open it you will find it opens to your homepage if you had it copy all of your settings that is.
