Ethernet Splitter?

I'm on high speed cable. I bought a new desktop. For the time being I'd like to use both my old and new computer.
I can pick up a cheap ethernet splitter (single-M and double-F) that will attach to my modem. That would give me two ethernet sockets so I can run an ethernet cable to each computer.
I read that doing this might keep the Internet from assigning its Internet Protocol address as it does to all computers. If I'm on the Net with one computer at a time it seems it shouldn't matter. Or will it? If it does matter then what if I just disconnect the ethernet cable from the computer I'm not using? Would that work? Thanks, Gene
