A Few Old Crows Came for Dinner

Well, it was just DH and moi! My friend gave me these 3 sitting crows in September...decided to use them for a fun centerpiece for our dinner tonight.

The glass leaf plates are from Dollar something, not Tree, got them last year. Good for cake or salad...

The small fruit shaped bread plate I found in Target in the clearance...I got pears too..

I think the squash shaped candle was from Pier One, 75 off after season, and the candles around the crows are from Pottery Barn.

Got the pork chops on sale too, LOL!!!

And Karen, I didn't show the desert...

It doesn't matter about the dessert, LOL, I'm not a big dessert person. Its the pork chops and rice that did me in.
One of my favorite dinners. And at least its one even I can make. LOL. Amazing!
I love the crow centerpiece, that it so darn cute!! And the whole setting is delightful. One of my favorites you've done in fact. Hey, I'm just a simple country girl. LOL. Fancy is NOT my middle name.

Love the crows in the centerpiece! They are so cute sitting up there, must have made you smile through the whole meal. And you even have a pumpkin basket! Talk about sticking to the theme. Everything looks so nice and fun too. Since Karen doesn't mind about the desserts, you can always show them from now on--I can live vicariously through your pics! (Saves calories that way, you know!) LOL

I had a chick crow at 6 weeks, I do think it's possible. I wouldn't worry too much about the noise just yet as it will not carry the same loudness for a while. Also some crow early and then stop for a few weeks then pick it back up, it takes quite a while for them to develope a full grown crow. From the behavior you mentioned it sure does sound like a roo. If you know you can't keep him I would find him a home sooner than later, it will give you a peace of mind plus the longer you have him the more attached you may become. -Sheila

My husband made a raised table for me. It's about three feet high (a 4 x 4 post) and the table top is about 2 x 3. My crows get dried dog food every morning and if I have meat scraps for dinner they get those late in the day. They like fish scraps, chicken hearts, peanuts, cooked spaghetti (sans the sauce), leftover fruit .. just about any scraps I have they enjoy. Be careful with chips and crackers as I have read that salt is very bad for birds ... can't place the article right now, but google it maybe. When I go out to fill my tray feeders with black oil sunflower seeds for the birds and squirrels I call for the crows and they show up and start making a lot of noise. I know many people dislike them, but they are so fascinating to watch and really are beautiful birds. I love my crows. This year I have a pair nesting in my back yard and I can watch them from inside my living room and not disturb them. They are very sweet together and make all sorts of lovely little noises to each other. I enjoy having them in my yard. The funniest thing I've seen them doing lately is following squirrels around and digging up the peanut they just buried. The squirrels are clueless. lol They had me laughing out loud watching them last week. I kept giving the squirrels peanuts just to keep the game going. Cheap entertainment for me. :)

The original decline in populations of the Kirtland's Warbler was due to loss of the early successional jack pine habitat, through decades of fire suppression, these birds depend on. Fire opens the jack pine's cones causing seeds to come out and germinate after a fire. The young growth of pines that followed is what the Kirtland's Warbler depended on. Once the population of Kirtland's Warblers declined from loss of habitat, added pressures from parasitism of their nests by Brown-headed Cowbirds added to their declining population. So, the Kirtland's Warbler was not on the "brink of extinction" due to cowbirds, but originally was due to loss of habitat that cause their population decline in the first place. In addition to cowbird parasitism the Black-capped Vireo experienced declining populations due to loss of habitat via urbanization, fire exlcusion, grazing, and brush control. The Golden-cheeked Warbler has suffered tremendous habitat loss of its Ashe juniper habitat due to the expansion of the cities of Austin, San Antonio, and Waco. Add to that parasitism by cowbirds, and you get the same story as for the Kirtland's Warbler. These three species, both with normally limited distributions due to extremely narrow habitat requirements, make them susceptible to habitat loss and the added pressures that brings on their populations. The moral here is that other causes, primarily loss of the species primary habitat, are the reasons for the initial decline of these species. Then, the impact of cowbird parasitism is enhanced because the species impacted have such low populations from habitat loss, they can't make up for the loss of parasitism by cowbirds. Thus, wildlife biologists and land managers institute cowbird removal programs within the species last remaining breeding habitats so that populations can more easily recover as new habitat is created to aid in recovery. One should study up on it. And a final note (which has been mentioned on this and other forums) Brown-headed Cowbirds are a protected native species. Any killing of these birds, however deemed "right", is illegal without a permit. If you are going to write about killing them or other species besides starlings, house sparrows, and rock pigeons that are not protected, you should be prepared for people responding to your posts with less than sympathetic views. Len, funny you should say that. I don't know why but it reminded me of a couple of stories I have heard about the South West of WA... Apparently there are some large black cats loose in the forests down there. They think maybe they're Pumas. Of course it's mostly urban legend but my Brother in law who works on Vineyards in the area swears he heard them roaring a few nights in a row and farmers have reported they've found young cattle with their heads almost severed. Then there are the claw marks in the trees. Some of these stories go back 15 years I believe and I don't think anyone can explain where they came from. I have heard a theory that they escaped from the circus when their trailer came open in a car accident... but I think it's just a theory... Then there is the mystereous little tassie tiger like animal that has been seen almost a dozen times (including by me once) around Yalgorup National Park. Funny looking thing it is, the size and shape of a small/medium dog, wirey looking and with a cat like face. Kind of half way between a cat and a fox, with stripes of course! Weird little animal. i wonder if they'll be classed as native species and protected also?? Interesting! Ange

Pretty dessert by the way.
Just don't show any coconut cakes, banana creme pies, or peanutbutter choc-chip cookies. I'll be fine with your other desserts. Oh, show all the seafood you want too.

Kathleen, glad you didn't mean you and your DH were the "Old Crows" who came for dinner!!LOL!! Those sitting crows are so adorable! I loved how you displayed them in your cloche in the other post and now as a centerpiece on your table with the other coordinating accessories/dishes, it all looks great. The squash shaped candle is pretty and gives a nice glow. Your food is fab as usual!!

Judith, so many of the things I have are hostess gifts. It is a nice reminder of the person when I use them.

I just adore those crows...they're so happy looking! And while dinner looks great (on those wonderful dishes), I'll just skip right to the tart, if that's okay...

Thank you...and remember I buy after the season and pack away in a bin for next year.
The digi camera has been a great help for me....I take a pic of it so I remember what I bought! I was just browsing through the pics and came upon things I bought for gifts for this Cmas...I had forgotten all about them..

I can almost smell your apple tart, Kathleen. Yummy looking and bet it was delicious.

I think that is such a good idea to stock up on items you find on sale so that you have them on hand and ready for gifts when needed. Sure a thrifty way to be prepared. I'd probably like them so much I wouldn't want to part with them though!

Kathleen, I probably would like a lot of desserts if I tried them. But I do my best to avoid sweet things like that since I weigh "a hundred and plenty" already. But I never had a major sweet tooth since I'm a meat person first and foremost. My daughter makes me a coconut cake on my birthday. My Mom used to spoil me with the cookies but since she's been gone, I don't bake them. Don't need the calories.

I know, I love to bake but no one here to eat it. DH has self control,, he will eat one piece a day...me not so!

Love the table setting Kathleen..so colorful and love the 'Company' you had at the table...so cute. Everything looks so delicious..but when I scrolled down to read more...your Apple Tart actually made my mouth water!! Looks simply lucious..

Hi Marti! Welcome to our little group. I love the pic frame you made in your blog...

The glasses came from a Dansk store we used to have here in Southampton. Unfortunately, Dansk was bought out by Lenox, and after less than a year, they closed the store. It was a wonderful place to find lovely things, and they were generous with their discounts and coupons..

Did DH notice?...I do this almost every night so he usually says a word or two, and then complains I am taking too long with the pic of his dinner...but he is used to it by now!
