Too many spiders this fall!!
Comments (10)we have had black widows everywhere this year. they've inhabited the usual places and then they've inhabited the unusual places, such as the upper corners of my porch and I've even found a couple in the upper corners of living room!! I'm thinking our mild winter last year was perfect for breeding or just didn't kill off enough of the population? I do know that nothing feels quite like a widow web. It's thicker than any other spider web and if you touch it, it will bounce back at you, rather than break. The moment you feel anything like that while you are gardening, back away quickly and put on some gloves!!! BTW, I've had black widows in my basil. I do know they prefer piles of wood and dark places, but once those places get too crowded, I think the ladies will choose other places to live....See Morethe life of a hobbit (slightly ot)
Comments (41)Maddie, My tractor mower has headlights. Mine is an old one I bought for $300 - mows great, has four speeds, plus revearse, and has headlights. :) I tend to get cracked heals, too, and cracked fingers and they are painful. I use a dremel to sand off the thick calluses and then I apply bag balm. At night, I put socks on afterward when are very cracked & sore. Works great, gets rid of the stains and helps them heal. Bag balm has a natural anti-biotic in it that helps heal cuts and sores, too. Great for cat scratches. When I was a Vet-tech years back, I used it on the animals feet or sores or when they bit or scratched me. I found that it helped prevent my feet from cracking, because of the emolients in it. Put the bag balm, rub in well, then don your latex gloves or other gloves. In winter, I put on latec gloves then my winter gloves to keep my hands dry and warm. I love to "play in the dirt", go barefoot and garden till I am grubby, but I can't stand to be dirty and wet afterwards, for some reason. I am constantly rinsing off my feet and hands with the garden hose, which of course, tends to make my feet dry out and crack even more. The calluses get so thick that they crack and it really hurts. It also cripples me if I don't keep them sanded off with the dremel. I don't like that. But wearing shoes causes my ankles to swell, so it is either men's sandles, Flip-flops (we used to call them thongs), of I go barefooted. I do have a pair of men's Adidas slides, but they are size 12 - just twice my shoes size, but I wear them. I look like a Hobbit in those! I am a dust magnet and always have things caught in my hair - twigs, bits of grit, flowers, leaves, bugs. Believe me, I am not a "priss", but I like to look nice when I go somewhere. Once a week I work my feet over really well. I cannot go to bed with dirty, craggy feet. Grosses me out! I also paint my nails from time to time. (doesn't last too long, but I like it and it makes me feel pretty). Gotta go put up my chickens. It is thundering and about to storm. Zooks! Love this thread! Comments (10)DWC(Deep Water Culture) is the easiest system to use and you can simply make it with a home depot/lowes paint bucket, air pump/tubes, and a net pot. All for very cheap. I am sure others will disagreebut I think that it is best to start out simple with hydro and gain a good understanding of it. Making the system is one thing but growing the plants and learning the standard items or media that we use to grow hydroponically can take a grow or even a couple of grows in a simple system to solidify the knowledge. i.e. you've got to learn how to deal with pH, watering, maintaining a nutrient concentration, how to change a reservoir efficiently, keeping the rez clean of algae, etc. My 2 cents...See MoreAnyone want to help with tille? Comments (6)I'm back. Melissa, I hadn't considered soapstone. Is it soft and would it be prone to chipping? Does it need to be sealed? If the answers are no, I'd certainly like to check it out. Oruboris, I googled that pattern and it is lovely. Like cubmaster mentioned, my tile store sells by the box so it might get pricey for this room. But in the not too distant future I hope to retile a very large sunroom and it would be awesome in there. I'm saving the pattern for sure. Diagonal is classic and in the running but cubmaster's idea of brick or running bond sounds interesting. How about any of these options... The tiles I like come in 20 and 13 inch squares and 20x13, 10x13, and 12x18 rectangles. I love the larger format tiles but is the room too small for 20 inch tile? On the short side it would be only 2.5 tiles wide. What do you think of a brick/running bond pattern with the rectangles? Would the 20x13 or 12x18 work or are they too large? I'd run them parallel to the short side. Opinions welcomed. Thanks, Alida...See Morejuniork
