Passwords

I thought I should ask this in a new thread. I have Linksys router E2000 v 1. I set it up myself, but called their tech to be sure the set up was secure because it didn't confirm that it was like my old one did. The E2000 made my desktop and my laptop wireless.

#1 The set up is secure so do I need a password at startup? I have one on the laptop but none on my desktop.

While you are here I thought you could answer this one also.

#2 The router has 4 ethernet slots in the back. What are they for.

A secured router typically does not need a password. When your computer turns on, you can choose whether to have a password for that, but that has nothing to do with your router. Your router will be on all the time, even when your computer is shut down, unless you choose to separately disconnect the power to it. And you can turn it back on by reconnecting power regardless of whether your computer is on or not. You are not going to see anything on your computer screen relating to the router "starting up."

Wireless routers, like the one you have, still provide extra ethernet slots so you can run ethernet cables to other computers or other ethernet-connected devices if you can't or don't want to have a wireless connection to them.

I should have said, do I need passwords when I boot up my computers since the routers have passwords.

When you ask if passwords are "saved at Firefox," it sounds that you have the impression that Firefox is a company that stores your passwords for you elsewhere than on your computer. Firefox is a browser -- like any other program that is installed on your computer -- and as a part of that program has a file that contains your passwords and they are on your hard drive. " Every time you enter a password you are putting it on the internet. " This isn't strictly true. Many sign-ons are encrypted as they travel across the internet. Though those too are accessible by someone who wants to. And for the ones that don't, so what? People are no more liable to financial ruin with someone getting into their Facebook or email account than if someone steals a checkbook. Does anyone keep that and extra checks in a 2 ton safe at home? The most sophisticated and brilliant security experts and systems cannot provide absolute 100% security, especially not against state sponsored internet misbehavior. If someone wants to get some part of your personal information, they can. If someone wants to break into your home, they can. It's nothing to spend time worrying about.

Good advice from maddielee. I don't like to click links in those kind of emails, but open a new tab/window and go directly to the site to check. I've had a number of spam emails informing me that an account has been breached, etc., prompting me to click a link and update my info - which I will not. And most definitely check the email address it's sent from. I can imagine someone trying to get into an account who lost their password and mistaking someone else's account/username for theirs. Don't see the point in trying to deliberately commandeer anyone's Houzz account, tho. What is there to gain? Do you have G'web 'enemies'?

Go to your settings and check your email address to make sure you're using the correct one. You can also log in with FB (if you have an account). click on your icon on the top right next to "your Houzz". Then go down to "profile and settings". You'll find the link for your password there. OR.................. if your browser on your computer saves your password, you can find your password in your browsers password settings. I'll have to search again to find that, but it depends on the browser you use as well.

Kudzu, we must of posted the same time on my second post. Thanks for answering the question. Without those passwords there is less chance of a password foul up.

Some security guru's might say even if you are the only person to have access to your computers you should have a start up password.. it can stop some malware from installing.

I use password and windows Netplwiz.exe to autologon. Anyone else around could use my computer anyhow.. its never off.

You're talking about a password for you computer? Completely up to you. Might make sense if you have kids about and don't want them using your account or mucking things up.

Your router should have two passwords -- one to access the administrative functions and the other for your WiFi. You definitely want to change the default password for the administrator and the password for the WiFi should be a "hard" password.

The Ethernet ports are for wired network connections. Frankly, I'd use a wired connection whenever practical. They're typically faster and less troublesome. Most modern computers include an Ethernet jack.

I deleted the start up password. It may save me from having to reformat down the line.
