Here are the rules...

tables must be set for 6 people...

must have tablecloth, placemats, charger plate and regular dinner plate.....

silverware, sterling if possible..

glasses for wine as well as water.....

napkins and napkin rings...

bread plate, soup bowl, etc..

many decorative accesories...

fresh flower centerpiece....candles...

And let's show the food too!

I LOVE the idea Kathleen! But am not sure I can participate. I just did a "play" table for two which I took pics of but then took it apart as I had to take some of the stuff to decorate the staff coffee room table (Halloween) as it was my coffee week. I don't have enough Halloween stuff yet to leave stuff there and do another one at home. If I'm allowed, I can post pics of the "play" one I did as well as the one at work (the only food though was muffins!)If you'd rather, I'll just post it on a separate thread.

For instance, I'm generally fond of Fire Island and have three in my garden where I have very few duplicates. But this year they're all slug eaten, so I can't bring myself to vote for it. Also realizing that I generally have a lot more competition in the medium and large categories (for yellows, greens and blues) than the others. I won't vote for something I don't like in the other categories, but I may not like it as much as something in the more competitive categories.

Clinresga, your logic seems fine, though I think your assumptions about my hand wash water usage is inflated. I've done a lot of it this last month, and have a pretty good idea of how much I use and how much the machine that didn't work was rated for. Your argument is just not to the point. I'm not looking for "correctness". I'm looking for clean, dry dishes. I do see how forcing wet dishes from the dishwashers on the masses, or forcing them to accommodate to what the dishwasher does, is a societal good for water and energy savings. That doesn't mean it works for every individual, and I think you've misunderstood me. I'm not saying that the world should eliminate energy saving dishwashers. The point of my original post is that I'm amazed that so many of us don't mind when the dishes don't come out dry. (And I do know that many people report having dry dishes with the no heated dry ones. This is a highly variable outcome which depends on water type, chemicals used, and mass of load to hold heat.) The reason hand washing (using water waste avoidance techniques, though possibly using more than the DW would) would be better than air drying from the DW is that there's no way I'm keeping an open DW in the middle of the kitchen, and no way I'm moving everything to drying racks outside the DW to be in my way and get dirty again from splatter while they're drying, and no way I'm wasting my time shaking them off and letting them dry when I could just dry them and put them away in one step. And since the biggest part of the chore is the drying (I guess I'm better at the washing part than your average person), that's a big deal reason for having a labor saving machine. I save an awful lot of energy that other people expend: I rarely drive (work at home, shop nearby, etc.), I have a large solar electric plant, I don't use a lot of lighting, etc. I save my usage for computers, TV's and kitchen appliances. And my choice is to have a dishwasher that actually gets my dishes dry rather than keep the lights on during the day, driving around all day, and things like that. So no nose is being cut off here. I found a dishwasher that dries my dishes. It uses more energy than on the cycle that leaves them dirty and wet. Too bad. This is how I choose to use my share of resources. Dianne, what a great story! I've lived by and worked with people who came from primitive areas and had no notion even how to use indoor plumbing. It's so amazing to hear of someone who is privileged, and presumably has access to television, who is so stymied by 20th Century technology. Thank-you for sharing! I spent a year doing my laundry in a bucket (no tub) and hanging it out in the rain to dry (which it did eventually). And during that time I did have a dish drainer and let most of the dishes air dry. I do appreciate modern marvels. :) I think my frustration was that we seem to have taken a step backward in marvelousness on some items, that in trying to meet some arbitrary goal we're producing inferior products that won't do the job right and won't last very long (creating a big resource suck at the manufacturing end). I totally misunderstood what you mean about flicking off the bowls. That part is fine with me!! I'd just take a towel to those and not worry about it. In my reply to you I thought you were responding to when I said that the dishes were drier when I hand wash them and set them to drain because I flick the water off before putting them down. I don't mind toweling where the water accumulates in the well at the top of a mug or bowl, or under the rim of a container. It's soaking wet everything that takes 40 minutes to towel off (or leave pulled out in the racks for hours since the DW is too well sealed for them to dry inside--I tried that with the first DW and they were still wet 2 days later). To be clear, what I'm talking about is wet all over. Not slightly damp, even, but soaking wet. Have a heated cycle for long enough to dry the accumulated water in the wells at the bottoms of things would truly but a terrible waste of energy. I've never asked for that. When the rest of the dish is dry and there's just that bit in the well of the rim, getting it dry is no big deal, whether by air or towel. Really. As far as I can tell, my new new DW dries the dishes just fine on the use more energy cycles, and doesn't even get the dishes clean on the normal cycle. My hypothesis is that the normal cycle is called that to be competitive, and the other ones are there to actually get the job done. Whatever. Works for me. The added effort of pushing the correct buttons to select a decent cycle is not too much for my winsome and delicate self to undertake. :) Much, much, ever so much better than a DW that doesn't dry the dishes. I wonder if one could put a couple of ceramic bed warming bricks in a Miele dishwasher and have all the dishes come out dry without having to have more mass in the dishes themselves? But then, it's having to think of these things that made me post this topic in the first place...

Hi Plant Love, which site do you prefer for rainfall data? I did a quick search and found myself overwhelmed with info, I tried this one but was not sure what to enter to find out monthly totals, http://climate.weather.gc.ca/index_e.html I wonder if there is a graph summary out there of rainfall in the past few decades per area? I do notice the plant hardiness zones were adjusted a few years ago (2014?).

arkansas girl, your point about how it is not profitable to produce really durable consumer items is on point. Back when Singer was filling homes with sewing machines they built some pretty good machines and they built them to last. But, that meant that people were buying fewer machines because they lasted so well. So, Singer started offering incentives to trade in old machines and buy a new one. But what they did was destroy the old machine rather than reselling them. They did not want a lot of older machines being used and handed down and resold because it cut into their market. Durable machines did not make for profit. And, back then, they could not just add a bunch of useless features to the machines as easily as can be done today in order to add percieved value.

As I was reading, my mind was hurriedly thinking "Do I have matching dishes for six?" "I don't think my silverware is sterling!" "What do I have that would work on a Halloween table?" "Fresh flowers! She's got to be kidding!" LOL Whew, what a relief. LOL

I posted pics of my Fall table using my black plates along with my pumpkins. I'll see if I have anything that would do for a Halloween table--something just for fun. ;o)

Guess I was totally sucked in by your little "trick" Kathleen! I was so excited by your idea, I didn't really read all the "rules" thoroughly to see they were quite "extreme". But now that you have played your "trick", we will all get a "treat" if people can post a few "fun" tables!

We used to do it about once a month...some of the husbands were in disbelief. I believe it was Jaybird who did her's in front of the fireplace and dh commented how nice it was.
I just think it is fun!

Kathleen, LOL, love the part about candy corn being the veggie (since I dispise cooked veggies!)
But I am planing on doing a holiday table...still tweaking it. But you can forget the sterling silverware. I'm far off from that, maybe one place setting at a time I can afford, then my DD could jump in and buy me the other place setting...(yah, a cold day in.....) LOL, she draws the line over sterling (she already bought me most of my treasured beautiful stainless) see link:

That is beautiful! You use that for every day? It is very pretty. And doesn't have to be polished like sterling!

Kathleen, nope, I don't used it for everyday, I do keep the Yamazaki for a bit more special occassions, but ALWAYS when my DD is over, since she bought most of them over the years, place setting by place setting, I do want her to know that I love and appreciate them and her for purchasing them for me. I use my Oneida "Michelangelo" as my everyday, that is unless I have a need for a different look then I pull out a different look from my other very inexpensive stainless. Even though it doesn't have to be polished...well, I really wouldn't mind for sterling...I have a few things that I have to polish now, I am grumpy while I do it, but when I am done...WOW, it's all worth it LOL

Judith, that flatware is extraordinary! I have never seen forks with tynes like that, love them. And with the gold and silver together, they are so versatile. With your DD giving you them, set by set, they must also have such special meaning.

DD, thank you, the fork design is especially what drew them to me, they are so different! I also wanted a touch of gold to be in the stainless, that way they tied in with my gold edged china, and a set of gold rimmed crystal. DD gave me one set at a time for special occasions, Christmas gifts, B-Days gift, Moms Day, it took a while, but I have a place setting for 8 now. A few years ago she bought me a beautiful footed silverware box from the Bombay store, she wanted to make sure the "investment" had a nice storage place. She went to alot of trouble for me, so it makes the set "priceless".

This is an occassion were I used the gold and stainless silverware, it allowed me to work in the mixture of silver and gold elseware in the tablesetting. Silver charger, gold rimmed dishes and crystal.

Judith, I remembered them from that setting..they struck me then as unique.
And of course, so special that your dd gave them to you a setting at a time...
I have one set with gold by Wallace. I bought them years ago to use with my Lenox Eternal Christmas. Pretty, but nothing like yours.

I haven't been around long enough to have posted a table setting, but maybe next week after my Halloween party is over, I can do a setting to "contribute"?

Since I already did a Halloween Table and with being up to my neck in all kinds of things I'm not planning another table until Thanksgiving. All of you have fun and I'll be looking forward to all of your creations...:)

I had a ball doing this!
You can still eat outside here in So. California if you can hide from the breeze, so I did an outdoor arrangement.
The skeleton arm came from a mantle decoration I made two years ago after having seen it on TV.
Red metal dishes are from the Pottery Barn line that's been showing up in their stores every spring. It all goes on sale when the fall stuff starts to arrive, so prices are not too bad.
The white melanie plates are the old Heller dishes that came in a zillion colors in the 70s.
Candle holders are milk glass goblets. NOTICE: They are at different heights. You guys taught me to do that!
The close-up of the place setting looks like the plate is going to fall off the table. I must have been rearranging something and forgot to push it back.
Napkins and placemats are from my New Years Eve stash.
Little skeletons came from a skeleton garland I got last Halloween. Lots of them had lost a limb or two, so I just cut them up and used the good ones for napkin rings.
